Saco is a coastal city located on the Atlantic Coast in Maine. The city features some beautiful beaches, scenic areas and rich history. There are about 20,000 people living in the city, of which 17.1% are seniors. Older adults may appreciate living less than 4 miles from the highly rated Southern Maine Healthcare Biddeford Medical Center and having access to a variety of senior resources provided by the city.
Assisted living communities serve older adults who require help with day-to-day tasks. Seniors receive support with the activities of daily living such as washing, dressing, cooking and laundry. The medical services offered by assisted living facilities are limited, so seniors who are in poor health may need to consider paying extra for nursing home care. Typical assisted living facilities in Saco charge $6,583 per month for their services, compared to a statewide median of $5,942 per month.
This guide explores the cost of assisted living in Saco and other nearby cities, as well as the cost of other types of care and the pros and cons to living in Saco. It also includes some useful resources for older adults who live in the city.

Wardwell Retirement had old and new sections. It was comfortable and definitely more of a community in and about the common areas. There were people making puzzles, playing Bingo, reading, and socializing. My mother knew people at this location, so it scored the highest from a location perspective. The drawback was the rooms were smaller and did not have a small kitchen facility available to the residents. The staff was very good and could administer medications, but they didn’t have the progression to memory or nursing home; they were strictly assisted living. It was the least expensive place we saw.

I’ve had a family member in the assisted living unit for over three years. Before the change in management things were great. Since the change before COVID, it seems the staff are very unhappy and there’s a high turn over, which is never a good sign. I have gone there serval times to find my family members bathroom disgusting. Borderline almost a health and safety concern. During lock downs when there’s a COVID out break, it does not seem the staff go into negative residents room and interact with them. They do not support with attending appointments, they just drop off residents and do not even wait for a family member to arrive at the appointment. This is a major concern for anyone with memory concerns. When asked to take my family members blood pressure when they were feeling ill, the staff member seemed annoyed by this. I called back two hours later and it still had not been done. They send residents to the hospital for minor things. They are about to increase their fees and they are already not providing top care. Not worth the money. Do not have a family member go here if there are not people available near by to pick up the slack. Local is nice, rooms are nice and the other residents are amazing.

I’ve toured several places. The one I like the best is Stroudwater Lodge in Westbrook. First of all, I liked the staff. It seemed to be well staffed. All the staff seemed to be friendly. They have OT, PT, and speech therapy right on site. They’re full time there, so I like that a lot. Leah who took me around greeted every one of the residents we met by name. A couple of the residents spoke to us and said they loved it there, so that would be the first thing. I liked the facility. I like that they have a lot of activities geared towards seniors. For my friend, one of the things that was especially good is that the chef will do gluten free, which some places can’t accommodate.
I like the location. It’s in the woods, and there is a Portland trail (a really nice walking path right next to it). In fact, you can go through the largest patio to get to the walking trail, and it’s easy. It’s a wide path. It’s fairly easy walking, so I like that a lot.
They just seem to meet the needs of the people that were there. They look at it as their job is to fit the client, not the client to fit them. They provided us with a take-out meal, which was excellent. It’s big (which might not appeal to everybody), but it’s very comfortable. All of the activity rooms, exercise rooms, and everything was very nice. The apartments were lovely.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Saco
Assisted living facilities in Saco fall under the remit of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. Facilities are licensed by the Division of Licensing and Certification and are expected to comply with regulations rating to staffing, staff training, health and safety and medication administration. Regular inspections are performed to maintain care standards.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Saco
- Maine is a state with reasonably friendly tax policies for seniors. Social Security income is not taxed, however other forms of retirement income are. Property taxes in the city are average for the United States. There are some tax deductions available for senior citizens.
- The overall cost of living in Saco is slightly above the national average. However, health care and transportation costs are lower than average. Assisted living fees typically include utilities, food and other common expenses, but health care and transportation for social activities may come out of the senior’s discretionary budget.
- Crime rates in Saco are far higher than the national average. Seniors who reside in an assisted living facility can feel confident they are protected because most assisted living communities have 24-hour staffing and security cameras. Many communities are gated, so only welcome visitors have access to them.
- Active seniors will find no shortage of things to do in Saco thanks to the SENIORity Program run by the Saco Parks and Recreation Authority. This program includes a variety of activities including exercise sessions, classes and walking groups for those aged 50 and over.
- Saco’s climate is generally more comfortable than other cities in Maine. The city typically sees just over 49 inches of rainfall per year and about 60 inches of snow each year. Summers are very warm, and temperatures can fall to as low as 10.8 degrees in the winter. Seniors who enjoy snowfall but want to take part in outdoor activities during the warmer months may appreciate the varied seasonal weather of the city.
Paying for Assisted Living in Saco
According to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2020, assisted living facilities in Saco typically charge $6,583 per month. This is above the Maine average cost of $5,942 and more than 50% above the national average fee of $4,300 per month.
The Cost of Assisted Living in Nearby Cities
Assisted living fees in nearby cities can vary widely. In Bangor, seniors pay far less than they do in other parts of Maine, with fees of just $4,842 per month. In Lewiston, the cost is above average, at $6,150. Across the border in New Hampshire, seniors pay much more for assisted living, with facilities typically charging $7,560 per month
The Cost of Other Types of Senior Care
In addition to assisted living, there are other care options for seniors with different needs. Adult day health care is the cheapest, costing $4,063 for daytime care at a community center. Homemaker services cost $5,625 for in-home personal care and $5,720 for limited health care. Nursing homes are the most expensive, due to the skilled nature of the care provided. Seniors can expect to pay $10,220 for a semiprivate room, or $11,224 for a private room.

It offers Medicare support, social events and classes, congregate nutrition and other programs to help seniors retain their independence and enjoy a high quality of life.
Age-Friendly Saco provides many services for older adults living in the city. It is supported by AARP grants and offers handyman services, senior transportation, and assistance with tech-related problems. The Lewiston Veterans Service Office works with veterans and their close relatives to help them navigate the complexities of the VA pensions and benefits system. It offers advice about the support that is available to former service people and can help with applying for benefits, or appealing where applications have been denied. The VSO can also advise on other help that is available to veterans, referring them to other agencies, assisting with the completion of forms, and advising on medical care services that veterans may qualify for.
