"My husband moved into The Mooring at the Downs. They were able to provide the care that he needed with his dementia. The staff was fabulous. It's a very good facility. It's geared specifically for severe dementia patients, and it's great. It has a ratio of approximately four residents per attendants, which is a great ratio. It's a beautiful facility. It is small and only holds twelve residents. They always try to get them out every day. They have a van, and they take them for rides. They have a beautiful outdoor area. They're very good and very attentive, and that's what you need."

"The only place I visited was the HarborChase of South Portland. The staff there was friendly and welcoming. They showed me around. The only reason we didn't choose it was because it was brand new, and we needed somebody to be there for my father daily because of his issues that he had. They actually showed me the memory care, which I didn't want that at first because he wasn't a threat or anything like that. He just needed to have somebody check on him. He can dress himself and all that stuff; that's why we wanted more of an assisted, instead of more like a nursing home (which is what the memory care is to me). I just kind of walked through, and there were just barely a few people there. The staff showed me two or three places in there where they could eat, and they were all really nice places. They have activities and stuff like that daily."

"What I liked best about Woodlands Senior Living Cape Memory Care was the fact that it seemed to be able to meet my mother's needs, that it was local, a setting that she is familiar with, and that the services and care they provide is very much what she needs right now. We saw an example of one room. It was neat and it was clean. It was not occupied at the time that we saw it, but it seemed that it would be adequate for her needs. The staff who assisted me was very helpful. They had activities. I looked at the calendar that they have posted on their website, and it looks like a whole variety of activities for a variety of interests. I'm certain my mother will find some things that she would want to participate in. My mother is not yet in there, but it seemed to me everything that we were looking for. We're looking forward to having her move in so that she would be getting the kind of care that she needs, and we can be assured that she will be well taken care of."

"I really liked Avita of Stroudwater. It was beautiful, very new, very nice, and clean, and the staff was very kind. The rooms were nice. However, we're trying to get my brother closer to my mother in New Hampshire. It's too long of a trip for her to Avita. The dining room was lovely with lots of tables. The activities were really good and had more than one going on at a time. "

"Fallbrook Woods was very nice but not at all homey. The staff was fine and very technically oriented and sophisticated. I could feel that it was more a business rather than a care facility. They were very business-like. I didn't get to see any of the individual rooms because they were too busy to show them to me that day, and I just felt like the public areas were very crowded. "

"My relative is now in The Heron House and I'm happy with it. It's a smaller community and I like the fact that it's owner-occupied, and not one of these conglomerates. The staff is excellent and they have activities. I think it's a good buy. It's cheaper than the others that I've looked at, and as I can see, it's got better care than some of the big ones, and some of them had much less staff. They're an excellent value. It's a private lot, outside they've got raised beds for gardening, they've got planters on the porch that the residents can see and work on. They've also got decks on both sides of the building and they've got walking paths around the building. They have a central kitchen area and a central dining area."

"My friend is already in memory care at Avita of Wells. I like the environment and I like the staff. They were very engaging, they were energetic, and they tailored their responses to my friend to engage him. He was not happy about being there, and he was very scared because he didn't want to be out of his home, but they managed to get him to feel comfortable and engage with others in a very short period of time. In dealing with him, they are wonderful. He has special dietary needs, and they can meet those needs. Some of them are a little eccentric, but they still are able to meet them to make him feel more normal like himself. The administrative staff was fabulous in walking me through all of my concerns and fears and preconceived notions that I had about what this experience was going to be like. They were very helpful in helping me to see what was going on and to be calmer. So I feel very good about the decision I made. They provide three meals a day. It didn't have any smell that you would assume would be in a nursing home facility. There were no nasty smells there. It was very clean. It was very tidy. There was nothing disturbing. And I have a very sensitive nose, I have severe allergies and I wasn't triggered by anything in there. The grounds were immaculate and the garden area for the tenants was just beautiful. It was well-maintained and well-kept, and it was very clean and organized and not cluttered. It was very tidy. They have a lot of activities. They have an entire list of different activities available, including painting classes and different things that the tenants can participate in, which comes in handy for my friend. He is a photographer by trade, and they are even willing to put something together that would engage him and outings where he could continue his photography work. That's his passion, and no matter how old he gets or how far his memory has gone, that's what he's going to carry with them, and they're allowing him to do that. I was very impressed with it. And I looked at several before I made my decision. It's very expensive but they have so far exceeded all my expectations for my friend. Each neighborhood has a beautiful courtyard. Lovely grounds, nice flowers, and lawn. It's just beautiful. "

"Avita of Brunswick has a really friendly staff. My mom-in-law has moved in there and they are very caring and loving people. If they need somebody to play a game with the residents, then anybody from the staff will jump in and play the game with them. They had like a big family atmosphere for everybody that works there. The residents also help to make bird houses, bake cakes, and have some music where somebody comes in and plays music for them."
