I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I placed my husband in Maine Veterans' Homes-Scarborough and our experience has been very good. It's clean. The staff are very welcoming and attentive. They tend to make whatever food the resident wants if they don't want what the main meal is. They have a gathering room and a beautiful outdoor court that you can sit in. There's a big tent that you can sit under if you don't want to be in the sun but if you want to be in the sun, there are tables and chairs around. They do a lot with the veterans. They have a lot of activities. It has an excellent atmosphere. The food is very, very good. It's very well-kept.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My dad stayed in Maine Veterans' Homes - Scarborough. It was a wonderful place, we were so impressed with it. It was extremely clean, it didn't have that odor that sometimes is in nursing homes. You wouldn't have known it was a nursing home walking into it, and the staff was incredible. I couldn't have asked for better care. The dining area was really good, they offered him choices of what he wanted to eat. They could stop in and get a snack during the day or a cup of coffee whenever they wanted like water or juice, and flavored water was always available. There was always somebody there in the cafeteria area so that they could pop in whenever they wanted to. The staff was incredible. He went in there during COVID, so they didn't take his group out into the public. But they had a nice outdoor area that they always managed to take him out into, they had a glider swing there, they could play some ball or something like that. The staff always stayed and entertained them, and had them do things. He's not a fussy guy but he likes the food there.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My father is in Maine Veteran's Home Scarborough. It's very friendly. He loves the food. The grounds are very, very nice. There's a walking path. He sits outside all the time. He has memory issues, so his area has a gate around it. When we visit him, we get to sit outside every day and he walks around the flowerbeds, and they have some vegetable gardens there. It's very nice. All the staff has been extraordinary as far as keeping us informed of anything, passing information onto him, and telling us if he needs anything. They were very, very cautious with COVID and kept us informed with almost daily phone calls of what the status was, so I feel the communication is fantastic. The grounds are wonderful. The staff is wonderful. I wish my mother could go there, but she can't. I have no concerns at all, and he is happy there. They do believe in the whole dignity thing, and they live by what they say, so I'm very happy there. It's nice and bright inside, and there's a nice garden outside. I have not sampled a meal there, but after we left my dad, we went to see him the next morning, and I asked him how breakfast was, and he said it was fantastic. They have a cook that cooks what you ask for, and he said the eggs were perfect and he hasn't had a perfectly made egg in like two years. He is very, very happy. They also work very well with identifying what he can and can't eat because he's missing some teeth. He has put on a couple of pounds, which is what he needed to do because he's underweight, so that's a plus. The food has been fantastic.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My husband is at the Maine Veterans' Homes - Scarborough. I'm gonna be visiting him at his window. He's very new there. He is in the intake unit, which is under quarantine, that's why it is difficult to talk about specifics under these conditions, because everything is so strange with quarantine protocols. He's in skilled nursing now, and he is going into the memory care unit. It could not be more positive. It has been a wonderful, caring, and clean environment where the staff is very engaged with my husband, and are also communicating very well with me. I get regular calls with updates, and it's been a wonderful experience. His room is clean and comfortable. It is a single room because of the quarantine, and it's very bright. It has nice windows in it and it has a television, clean bedding, and it's nice sized. I've never tasted the food, but he said it's good, and he's enjoying it. Because of the quarantine and the pandemic, everything is restricted, plus he remains in the intake unit, so those are all single rooms. He has no roommate, and he has very little social activity except with the staff. There's a lot of staff interaction. He has an occupational therapist and CNAs. He has a number of people that are in and out, and a doctor and a physician assistant that come. The care is very high quality. No matter what the issue is, they call me right away. It's a very nice building. I'm not able to walk around because of the quarantine, but it looks very clean and very well kept, both inside and outside, and very well staffed. There seems to be a lot of people in and out of my husband's world and in and out of the building, because they don't use common quarters. They're doing all the right things to keep everybody healthy and safe. It's not a luxury hotel, but he didn't need a luxury hotel. He needed a safe, consistent environment with good care, and that's exactly what we got. They have activities. I get a monthly activity sheet and they have movies and all kinds of things. There's an occupational therapist that's working on a scrapbook. She asked me to bring pictures of our family. They're really engaging their clientele. Under quarantine, I think they're doing a pretty good job. It's worth the price because my husband is safe. He's still in the quarantine unit until he gets moved to the memory care, which will probably be another two to four weeks.

My mother is now in Maine Veteran's Home Scarborough, and she seems to love it. I've only dealt with the staff on the phone. Because of the COVID, I can't do too much with them but they seem okay. My mother says the food is really good. It's a little expensive. She's met some people that she likes, she's been alone for 3 years so it's nice that she's starting to meet people her age.

I visited this facility

I have visited the Maine Veterans’ Homes once. The staff was very good, and the food was really good as well. The rooms were quite small, but they were neat and clean. They had good security.

I visited this facility

My grandfather had frontal lobe dementia which is an uncommon type of dementia. He could remember things but he had to ask for help a lot. Because of the many times he asked for help, it really puts a strain on staff. We had to move him three different times until he ended up at the Maine Vets Home because the staff could not handle him. This was really hard on my family. However, the staff at the Maine Vets Home was amazing. Unlike the other places, they understood his disease and treated him with the dignity and respect that he deserved. He spent a year there and was probably the happiest he had been for the last few years of his life. The staff at the Maine Vets home were always helpful to my family and we can never be thankful enough for their kind care.
