The Best Nursing Home Communities in Cumberland County, ME

"My mother-in-law was in Springbrook Center for rehab and I got a frantic call that she was unresponsive and rushed to the hospital and that she had almost died. She had fallen there and nobody told us. It's not recorded in her medical notes. We had a horrible experience there. Her room was sparse, but it was clean. When you walked into the facility, it smelled like urine and like a toilet. She had a private room and her own bathroom, and it was very nice. We had one nurse's aide that was very good. She was always in her room by herself and she watched television in her room by herself. It looked to me like they had not done much maintenance. They just clean it and that's it. It's in need of some help."

"I was a volunteer at this nursing home, as well as a sister and daughter of an employee. The activities that were provided were good, for the budget of the nursing home. They provided a piano, many books, numerous televisions, and women were able to paint their nails. It was a shame that it smelled horrible, and the meals were less than good, but the staff was for the most part very friendly. The residents seemed happy with the living conditions, given the circumstances, and they were very happy that SP NH provided many different activities and many new volunteer faces were happy to be a part of their environment. The rooms were okay in size, and from what I overheard the cost was adequate (but I do feel all nursing homes are overpriced). In the area, there are many nursing homes and assisted living homes, although I did like South Portland Nursing Home, I believe the two assisted living homes in Cape Elizabeth (a 10 min drive) are much nicer with a much nicer outdoor space, although from what I have heard, it is MUCH more expensive. "

"My parents moved into Coastal Manor. It's small, it has the feeling of an old house rather than a nursing home. The people who live there are residents rather than patients, and there are many employees who have been there for multiple decades. Also, the owner, he's owned it for 37 years, and he's at the site every day because he lives on the property, so it's independently owned. They're kind, thoughtful, and responsive. I can't say enough about them. Maybe they could update any areas that are carpeted, or painted, or wallpapered, it would be good to see. They're a little dated, but that's OK."

"My grandfather had frontal lobe dementia which is an uncommon type of dementia. He could remember things but he had to ask for help a lot. Because of the many times he asked for help, it really puts a strain on staff. We had to move him three different times until he ended up at the Maine Vets Home because the staff could not handle him. This was really hard on my family. However, the staff at the Maine Vets Home was amazing. Unlike the other places, they understood his disease and treated him with the dignity and respect that he deserved. He spent a year there and was probably the happiest he had been for the last few years of his life. The staff at the Maine Vets home were always helpful to my family and we can never be thankful enough for their kind care. "

"I was able to visit Ledgewood Manor. I like that when you walk in, it doesn't smell. It's very nice and clean, everything's put away, the people are very nice and very friendly, and everything seems calm and collected. The rooms were adequate, they were clean, and seemed to have everything you would need. The food was good."

"It was very clean, and very professional looking. Staff was friendly and professional as well. However they didn't seem to encourage socializing or activities as much as they should. Most doors in the hallway were shut. There wasn't much going on Saturday and Friday nights. I know these people are on the older side but nobody likes to feel like they are cut off from the rest of the world. Staff was certainly of a high quality but I think more could be done in terms of getting patients out of thier bed rooms and into a more social and engaging activity. Lastly, the pricing was absurd. I know it is for most places but I wish my grandmother truly got what she paid for, I feel like she did not. "

"I recently visited this facility. This is a really well kept facility that is very clean inside and outside. The staff are very helpful and friendly and are very atentitive to the patients needs and or wants. The facility has all of the needed amenities and also has all of the up to date amenities. I would feel safe and comfortable with having one of my loved ones residing in this facility. The staff are very comforting and when I spoke to them about how they felt as caregivers to the patients, most of them told me they treat the patients as if they were one of their loved ones they were caring for and to me that meant a lot because how your loved ones are treated in these type of places is very important because nobody wants to leave their loved ones in a place they are uncomfortable in or that may treat them badly. "

"The social worker is a little back-stabber. These people do not know how to get along well with people who have accents from different parts of the country. The facility itself was nice, I never smelled anything bad, but they definitely need to fire the kitchen manager. She refuses to do her job for the residents safety. "

"I went on a tour of this assisted living facility to see how the quality of life was for the residents. This is a fairly well kept facility that has friendly staff that treated the residents as if they were their own family members. Everything is done on a schedule such as meals and different entertainment events that the residents can choose to be a part of such as games. The rooms are kept clean and fresh smelling. The staff are very alert and assist the residents with their every possible need and they do not make the residents wait for a long amount of time before they receive assistance and they are not mean or rude to the residents. This facility is a facility I would consider placing one of my elderly family members in because I wouldn't have to worry about their personal well being. There are so many facilities that are not kept clean and are not so nice to the residents but I can happily say this is not one of those places. The exterior of the facility is well kept and seems inviting and friendly as well. "

"The health care team on the unit was phenomenal. They each carry a heavy heart as they take care of our loved ones. I visited my loved one every day and at different times during the day. I saw the staff take care of their residents as if the resident was their own relative. They made me feel welcomed every day - The atmosphere was friendly and love was shown by all. Thank you. "

"Why 4 stars - The facility is dated & yes, I was freaked upon entering. I've discovered nursing homes are large dorms for the elderly so why wouldn't someone young have anxiety upon entering this type of facility. Think about it-You have NO idea until you have to deal with it, what happens when you can no longer care for your parents.My mother was there for a little over a year and LOVED the cafe which serves up a menu for residents each afternoon and evening. The staff was an outstanding 10 stars - are they a little understaffed-yes; do they employ a few staff who could care less-yes but this is in EVERY facility. Having a loved one in any facility is difficult but trust me put your focus on the simple pleasures your parent may want. Respect, courtesy and great food! I was pleasantly surprised as was my mom. This review pertains to the long term care unit - I can't speak to the assited living area. "
