Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Falmouth:
| Resource | Contact | Address | Service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maine Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) | (207) 626-4639 | 26 Edison Drive, Augusta, ME 04330 | The Maine State Housing Authority administers the federally funded weatherization assistance program for this state. Funds are used as needed by local Housing Authority offices throughout the state and this includes the area around Falmouth. The program is available to all residents with an annual income of less than $21,896 for a single-person household or $29,614 for two-person households. Preference is given to the elderly who are 60 or older and to families with disabled members in their home. This weatherization service seals and insulates ductwork, windows, doors and other structural sections of the home no cost after an in-person professional assessment. |
| Meals on Wheels of Portland | (800) 427-7411 | 310 Broadway, South Portland, ME 04106 | The Meals on Wheels food program for the elderly in Portland and southern Maine is run by Southern Maine Agency on Aging. The service is operated by Agency staff and volunteers who deliver five frozen meals between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays free of charge. Meals on Wheels also offers a Phone Pal service for regular well-being checkups of enrolled senior citizens. |
| City of Portland Adult Day Services Program | (207) 541-6619 | 389 Congress Street, Portland, ME 04101 | The Adult Day Services Program of the city of Portland is administered by the municipal government and open to seniors in the area. It offers day care services for seniors who live alone or want to give their caregivers a rest from helping them. The specific services offered by this program to those enrolled in it include health and medication supervision by a registered nurse, two daily meals that consist of a breakfast and a nutritious lunch, and the opportunity to join in on therapeutic activities. These include classes in exercise, art and music among other options. |
| Southern Maine Agency on Aging | (207) 396-6500 | Sam L. Cohen Center, 30 Barra Rd., Biddeford, ME 04005 | The Southern Maine Agency on Aging offers a whole range of services aside from its Meals on Wheels program for the elderly. Their other programs for seniors in Southern Maine and Falmouth include help with caregiver and Medicare management, counseling services for benefits, access to other government programs and courses in self-care and fall prevention for seniors. The SMAA also offers seniors enrollment in a volunteering initiative called the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program that can help them stay active and productive in their community. This service is available to older individuals who are 55 and over. The Agency also runs a respite care facility called the Sam L. Cohen Adult Day Center, for seniors with memory impairments. |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – oftentimes it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.

I have been able to return to work because they are taking care of my parents. They could improve on having enough staff so that they don't have to put people on a triple shift.
