We toured the assisted living at Bridgeway of Bensenville. It was very nice.
The staff showed us everything. We saw where to sign up first, the beauty shop, the floor that the assisted living folks would be on, and their dining room. She showed us a couple of rooms. She showed us a carpeted versus non-carpeted. She showed a studio, which is sort of a 1-bedroom. She even kind enough to try to find a room on the first floor, so my mom wouldn’t have to either walk or just travel too far anywhere. The staff was very nice.
The facility itself was very nice, open, clean, and friendly. They have an outdoor space where you can go outside. There’s a beauty shop and extra curricular activities for the folks. They have kind of the same things as the independent. We met the chef on the tour. Once we finished the tour, they gave us a couple of go-container meals for my mom and me. It was very good. We both got something different, and we both enjoyed it.

We’ve chosen the Victory Centre of River Woods for my brother. We’ve chosen it because it was close to home and my brother felt comfortable being closer to home. Secondly, it was very clean and the people were very kind. Thirdly, he has an area behind the building that’s not enclosed with a lot of heavy traffic and he can get out and just walk there.
I’ve been there a few times and I have talked to a few people and they enjoy the meals. They have no complaints, except that some people are older and they don’t like their vegetables. They take them out regularly for either shopping or activities. They have a day where they’ll take them gambling, to the store, or shopping. They always got something going on there. There are a lot of activities.
As a visitor, I would have to go somewhere in the middle and rate it a 3 because my brother isn’t living there yet. I can only go by what I see. The major person I met with was Barb, and she was extremely helpful. They’ve made my purpose for my brother easier for me, and they’ve helped me extremely well with all the paperwork. They’re very clear and knowledgeable about what I need to do now and in the future, which is good, because this is new to me and I don’t know what’s going on.

My stepdad and my mom are now in Generations at Oakton Arms. We are happy with it. It seems like a good place for them. When we walked in there, the size of the room kind of blew us away. The room they showed us had an attached room to it. They could have like a living room area, and then the other room could be their bedroom area, and each had their own bathroom. It’s like having two separate rooms and there’s a doorway between the two rooms. There’s double with everything. It has a double sink area, two refrigerators, and two closets. The double bathroom was a good thing, too. My mom has a lot of bathroom issues, so she was glad to have her own bathroom. The size of the room was great, too. We took a bunch of stuff out of their condo and moved it over there, and a lot of their larger things fit in there, so there’s quite a bit of space there.
It’s not a very fancy place. They get three meals a day, and they get nursing care. It just depends on what level of care you come in and how much nursing care you get. They have a beauty shop downstairs where somebody comes in once a week to cut hair. Downstairs, there’s a library with lots of books and a pool table. They have a rehab room where they can sign up for rehab. They have a community room where they show movies and things on a big screen for the people that live there. They have activities like bingo, card playing, and different kinds of games. The food is OK, but it’s nothing to brag about. They have an activity room where they offer crafts and things like that that people can do. They have outings for people. They can sign up to go to a play or something like that. And I think the community is kept up very nicely, too.

COVID-19 Rules for Assisted Living in Bensenville
Since most COVID-19 rules for Assisted Living Communities and other Senior Living Facilities are set at the state level, you can view the specific rules for your state on our Guide to Assisted Living in Illinois. Keep in mind that every community has specific policies that they put in place to protect their residents, so you should contact your local community for more information. Additionally, you can contact your local Area Agency on Aging to learn more – find contact information here.
What To Consider About Assisted Living in Bensenville
The Division of Assisted Living, a branch of the Illinois Department of Public Health, is responsible for monitoring licensed facilities throughout the state. It also regulates assisted living facility owners and administrators, which includes ensuring they receive licenses to operate only after passing the state’s competence test.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Bensenville
- Although crime statistics can never be called good, Bensenville’s exceptionally low property and violent crime rates are enviable. The chances of becoming a victim of property crime are half the national average and significantly below the norm for Illinois. Violent crime figures are even more impressive, with the chances of being a victim at 1 in 1,107, compared to the state average of 1 in 239.
- The Ride DuPage Transportation Program provides affordable transportation for adults aged 65 and older. There’s a $2 flag pull and then $1 per mile, with no fee for the senior’s first companion. Although distances are technically unlimited, they’re at the discretion of the individual provider. The service is only available to Bensenville residents whose submitted application forms have been approved.
- The average cost of living index in Bensenville is high compared to the Illinois median, primarily due to the cost of housing and health care.
- Bensenville seniors only need to travel a few minutes to find excellent health care facilities, such as the Wood Dale Medical Center and VNA Health Care. Nearby Chicago is also home to several world-class facilities, including the Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Rush University Medical Center.
- Bensenville’s climate can be cold and snowy in the winter, and summers can be humid, with temperatures averaging 84 degrees. Although May to August is a rainy season, Bensenville averages 3.7 inches of rain per month. In contrast, the summer months also see a significant amount of sun — over 15 hours per day in the height of the season.
- Sales tax is high when compared to other states, but Illinois doesn’t tax retirement income, including Social Security benefits and income from retirement savings accounts.
Paying for Assisted Living in Bensenville
The 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey findings shows that the average fee for assisted living in Bensenville is $4,825 per month. When compared to the state and national averages of $4,488 and $4,500, respectively, Bensenville seniors should budget an additional $337 per month.
The Cost of Assisted Living in Nearby Cities
Although above average at $4,825, Bensenville isn’t the costliest location in Illinois for assisted living. Cities such as Rockford at $5,250 per month and Springfield at $5,110 per month have significantly higher fees. However, Kankakee seniors typically pay $4,623, and in Peoria, $4,131 per month is the norm.
The Cost of Other Types of Senior Care
