Located on Florida’s southern Gulf Coast between Naples and Fort Myers, Estero is a village with a relaxing atmosphere that offers access to picturesque beaches, several state parks and a plethora of outdoor recreation. Originally a citrus community, the area is known for its hot, sunny climate, making it a popular destination for snowbirds. In fact, almost half of its 38,000 residents are seniors aged 65 and older.

While some seniors may choose to age in place at home, others may benefit from the support of an assisted living facility. These communities offer a social setting staffed by trained caregivers who can provide older adults with daily assistance and personal care services. As reported by Genworth Financial’s Cost of Care Survey 2020, these services cost around $4,500 per month in Estero, which is more expensive than the average Florida city.

This guide is meant to provide information for seniors exploring the option of assisted living in Estero. It includes a directory of assisted living facilities, a breakdown of care costs and some of the resources available to support seniors in their retirement.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Estero

Throughout the state of Florida, including the community of Estero, the Bureau of Health Facility Regulation is responsible for licensing and regulating all assisted living facilities. These facilities may operate under a standard license if they provide routine personal care or a specialty license if they offer more specialized services.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Estero

  • Seniors looking to escape the snow can enjoy warm weather year-round in Estero. Summer temperatures reach highs of 92 degrees, and winters rarely fall below 53. The area also sees more than 260 days of sunshine each year and a fair amount of rainfall to keep residents cool.
  • While Estero’s rates of violent crime are moderate, property crime rates are slightly higher than average (36.2 compared to 35.4). Fortunately, most assisted living facilities will have security equipment and safety procedures in place.
  • There are several world-class medical facilities in and around Estero, so seniors have easy access to care in the event of a medical emergency or illness. Many of these facilities are affiliated with the region’s top health care provider, Lee Health.
  • Estero’s relaxing coastal lifestyle does come at a price. With an index score of 112.3, its overall cost of living is higher than both the statewide median (102.8) and U.S. national average (100). This is largely due to the area’s high housing and health costs.
  • Florida has no income tax, so seniors will not have to pay taxes on their Social Security retirement benefits, pension income or any other forms of retirement income. This means that they may be able to allocate more funds towards the cost of assisted living services.
  • The Lee County area receives fair scores from the American Lung Association regarding its air quality, scoring a B grade for both high ozone days and 24-hour particle pollution. These scores are something for seniors with respiratory illnesses to consider as they’re likely to be spending a great deal of time outdoors.
  • Seniors can easily get where they need to with LeeTran. The transit service operates 22 bus and trolley routes between communities in Lee County, including Estero, as well as a service to the Southwest Florida International Airport. Discounted fares and passes are available to seniors who are 65 and older.
