Columbus, the capital of and largest city in Ohio, is one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the country. Home to the Ohio State University, Columbus also boasts many entertainment and cultural options including the Columbus Museum of Art, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and the Franklin Park Conservatory, which features a Victorian-style glass greenhouse and over 400 species of plants. Sports lovers can also attend Ohio State Buckeyes NCAA football and basketball games, or check out the action at a Columbus Blue Jackets NHL game. Though only around 9.8% of the Columbus population is made up of seniors over the age of 65, retirees there can also enjoy visiting the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, a variety of local parks and a wide array of exciting shopping and dining options in the metro area.

As they age, some seniors in the Columbus area may prefer receiving care in their own homes. Luckily, they have access to several options for quality home care, which runs about $24.25 per hour according to Genworth’s 2019 Cost of Care Survey. The average monthly cost is the same for both in-home care and home health care at $4,624. The cost of care in Columbus is only slightly higher than the national average of $22.50 per hour for in-home care and $23 per hour for home health care.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Columbus area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Columbus Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Columbus:

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
