New Brunswick is the seat of Middlesex County and a city of over 55,000 residents. According to the 2020 Census, adults aged 65 and older comprise 6.3% of the population, which, although significantly below average, belies the city’s appeal to seniors. New Brunswick is a college town, with a strong cafe culture, several small but beautiful parks and a pleasant downtown with many fine restaurants. The city’s average monthly fee for home care, the non-medical equivalent of home health care, is $5,148, which is more affordable than the state’s median of $5,529. Seniors needing greater levels of care aren’t far from well-regarded medical facilities, such as the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
Below we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the New Brunswick area – complete with services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled resources to help seniors and their families to access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Mom and dad started with Home Care here right after rehab. The nurse came out to meet my parents at the rehab center before the services even started and my parents clicked immediately. I was afraid that my life would change with my mom’s fall and dad’s Parkinson’s progression but the home health has a good handle on their daily living and my parents are always clean, happy and fed.

I hired Always Best Care for Mom Monday through Friday. They are expensive, but that’s the going rate, unfortunately. They were very reactive; I called them, and the next day, they were at the house doing the assessment to see what was exactly needed. However, there were two occasions where I called them and did not get a response back within 12 hours. On one occasion, I called them on a Friday afternoon, and they called me back on Saturday at 10:00. But, they’re not bad. The person they recommended was wonderful. I don’t have complaints about that.

He found a caregiver for us who was willing to also take the job. Kelly was just responsive to what we needed and willing to give it a try and work with me.
The two people he sent us were very experienced enough to understand how to deal with elderly people. My mom is 90 years old. Sometimes she can be cranky and they don’t take it personally. For the most part, they’re very connected to my mom. They are very good companions to her. I know they take good care of my mom.
Kelly has worked with me through all of this. He was very understanding about everything. Anytime I need to contact him to deal with something, he is always willing to do whatever it is that needs to be done.

Shalanda Home Care strives to be that differentiating factor in caring for your loved ones. We aim to be the best that we can be with a real focus on companion care. We take the time to listen and interact with your loved ones.

We want each and every one of our clients to have a fulfilling day where they feel good about themselves and look forward to what tomorrow can bring. Concurrently, we address all personal hygiene, food preparation and light household tasks.

Personally, I get a tremendous sense of satisfaction when family members tell me that their loved ones appreciate and feel good about the care they are receiving from Shalanda Home Care, where we will not settle for anything but premium in-home care.

Biography

After spending more than 15 years of caring for the elderly, mostly in long term care facilities, my experiences brought to light that our senior citizens deserve a different, more personal type of care, and a more nurturing and caring approach that addresses one’s individual needs, preferably in the comfort of one’s own home.

In thinking about it, I knew there had to be a different approach. The isolation from being alone for endless hours results in the desire for the elderly to just have someone that they can talk with, not just in the morning or evening, but a continuum of interacting with others.

Someone to take the time to show them the love, respect and dignity they deserve. Someone to hold their hand, listen to them and take that journey with them down memory lane. Companionship is integral to the caring of the elderly. This, in addition to ensuring that they are safe, secure and comfortable, are the very acute needs of this population.

Paying for Home Care in New Brunswick, NJ
The Cost of Home Care in New Brunswick, NJ
Although New Brunswick’s average home care costs of $5,148 are higher than the national median of $4,957, the city is one of the most affordable in the state. It competes easily with the average cost in nearby New York City, where the typical senior pays $5,529, a fee that’s also the average for Atlantic City and Ocean City. At $4,767, only Vineland offers more affordable home care than New Brunswick.
The Cost of Home Care vs. Other Senior Care Options in New Brunswick, NJ
The most inexpensive type of care in New Brunswick is adult day health care, which, at $1,866, is significantly cheaper than home care, at $5,148. However, home care provides one-on-one assistance within the senior’s home, as does home health care, although that option typically costs an additional $95 per month because it provides medical care. Assisted living and nursing home facilities are the costliest options, with the former averaging $8,145, and the latter, another $3,505 per month.

Financial Assistance for Home Care in New Brunswick, NJ
Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
- Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-Term Care Insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
- Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
- Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
- Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living.Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
- Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.
Free & Low-Cost Home Care Resources in New Brunswick, NJ
Seniors in New Brunswick may qualify for assistance from government agencies and nonprofit organizations operating in the area. The resources listed here can help to make homes more energy-efficient, pay some utility bills, finance repairs to make the home safer and arrange a regular supply of fresh and healthy meals.
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance program is a federally funded program designed to assist New Jersey residents of all ages who cannot afford to pay their heating and cooling bills. It's available to renters and homeowners whose incomes are no more than 60% of the state median. Payments are normally made directly to the energy supplier, except in certain cases, such as renters whose rent includes their energy costs.
The Section 504 Home Repair Program provides home repair loans to homeowners on very low incomes as well as grants to seniors with health and safety hazards in their homes. Grants can be up to $10,000, with no requirement to pay them back unless the senior sells the property within 3 years. Loans can be up to $40,000 over 20 years at 1% interest. Eligible participants are New Jersey residents who cannot get affordable financing elsewhere and have incomes at or below the limit for their county. Grants are only available to adults aged 62 and older.
Meals on Wheels in Greater New Brunswick delivers freshly prepared and nutritionally balanced meals to homebound seniors on weekdays, including holidays, normally between 10:30 a.m. and noon. Two meals are delivered per visit: one a hot lunch and the other a cold boxed meal for supper. During the delivery, the volunteer will use the opportunity to do a wellness check.
The Weatherization Assistance Program covers vital home improvement costs for residents with incomes equal to or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Homeowners and renters can apply, although renters will need permission from their home's owner before work can commence. Depending on the results of the home's energy audit, the program can pay for repairs to HVAC systems and windows and doors, as well as insulating attics and walls.
Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – oftentimes it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many home care agencies are there near New Brunswick?
As of 2022, there are 37 home care agencies serving seniors in and around New Brunswick. Although each is unique, all deliver the core services, such as companionship, personal care and light housekeeping, as well as customized care plans. Some offer additional services, including 24-hour live-in care and specialized support for seniors affected by memory loss.
What is the difference between in-home care and home health care?
Although both services sound similar, they’re quite different. In-home care, also referred to as home care, is a non-medical service for seniors struggling with daily living tasks. An assigned caregiver helps with common activities, such as getting in and out of bed, bathing and dressing. The caregiver may also do light housekeeping, prepare meals and shop for groceries. Home health care is a medical service, where the senior receives health care at home from therapists, skilled nurses and physicians. Medical services can include injections and therapeutic massages, while social services typically include counseling.
How do you pay for senior care at home?
It’s normal for seniors to pay for home care with their own money, although contributions from family members are also common. Many seniors use their savings and liquidize their assets to raise the funds they need, while some apply for reverse mortgages. If their plan allows, Medicare beneficiaries can cover some costs in the short term, while those with suitable Medicare Advantage plans have more options, including covering costs over longer periods. The Personal Preference Program may also be an option for New Jersey residents eligible for NJ FamilyCare Plan A.
Who is eligible for the veterans’ home care program?
Former members of the U.S. military eligible for VA health care benefits normally qualify for the
veterans’ home care program. If you’re unsure if you qualify, you can check which priority group you’re currently in, although you can change groups if your circumstances change. If you’re not eligible, you may qualify for the VA Family Caregiver Assistance Program if you have an individual or combined VA disability rating of 70% or more. The disability must be the result of your active military service or worsened by it. You must also need a minimum of 6 continuous months of one-on-one home care services.
Assisted living homes vs. home care: how to decide?
As both options provide essentially the same services, the decision will likely come down to your living preferences. Assisted living offers 24/7 care with staff always nearby and the opportunity to build new relationships with other residents. If you live at home but rarely see anyone besides your caregiver, assisted living may combat feelings of loneliness. However, home care’s advantages include one-on-one care while residing among familiar surroundings and the avoidance of a strict meal and activities schedule.
