They would not show at agreed times. If called to see when they will be here, got "voice mail". If I got through to the dispatcher, they would say, "trying to find a CNA". Once sent an untrained aid to us.
They could not cover what we initially needed. It was more stressful having them on board than trying to deal with caregiving myself.

It was kind of rough at first with Interim HealthCare of Wichita. I had two dogs, and it was a part of the deal that when they come to take care of me, they would also have to be able to take care of my animals. Some of them just did not work out well with the dogs, but now I got some really good people with me. It took a while to really get people who really want to be here with me. We’re doing well right now and I’m still using their services. They help me with the bath, they wash my hair and they also help around the house like sweeping the floor, dusting and doing laundry. I have them from 8:30 to 2:30, and I have another one that comes from 11:00 at night until 7:00 in the morning, everyday including weekends. I think the billing is way too much, at $22 an hour. The people that are helping me aren’t getting that much money, but that’s what I have to pay, which is pretty steep. I have also had some problems with the office and the billing at first, so I would rate them a 4. It’s hard getting the right people at first. There were several caregivers where we had to call I and say not to send them back, because they didn’t get along with me or my husband or the dogs, and they didnt take good care of me. That was tough at first, but I have them quite a while now and I have the same people every day now which makes a world of difference. It’s a good thing.

I really like that they keep an eye out for their aides as well as their clients by providing supplemental health insurance to them. CNAs and HHAs work hard jobs and sometimes with few benefits. I think you get better care when you treat your care-givers well. I know the owner of this company and she is a sharp, caring nurse! .

Located in the downtown area of Wichita, this busy focal point for the aging network handles everything Seniors. The Meals on Wheels program is housed here. A senior work program is also on site. There is a lending program for used equipment here and a social service advocate. A phone contact program is stationed here for information and referrals to the senior network. There are also plenty of activities and a Congregate meal site. Some transportation is available. You will be known by name at this site. I like that these workers are commited to the seniors in their city. These folks are not pulling in big salaries. They are constrained by city, state and county budgets as to how much they can help out, but they do care and work hard to find ways to meet the needs of the local seniors. Most assistance is free or on a sliding fee scheduled.

For those not familiar with the PACE program in Wichita, this is an all-inclusive managed care program for seniors meeting the Medicare/ Medicaid eligibility requirements. It is operated by the Via Christi medical network. This program provides for everything seniors might need, except CHOICE. You must use providers within the network. So be prepared to say good-bye to your family doc if you choose this option of service delivery. An interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social workers, dieticians, therapists, etc. will assess, coordinate and deliver any of the traditional Medicare/Medicaid services one may need. This includes placement in a nursing home, if necessary, but only the ones they contract with. Of course there are plenty of qualified, caring folks involvled, but it is hard to get past the fact that you are locked in..

Paying for Home Care in Wichita, KS
The Cost of Home Care in Wichita, KS
Genworth Financial’s 2021 Cost of Care Survey reports that home care costs in Wichita are higher than the state average but are affordable compared to the national average, which is $190 higher. Prices in Manhattan are in line with the state average at $4,576, and Lawrence shares Wichita’s average monthly cost of $4,767. Seniors can expect to pay the highest rates in Topeka, where home care is $858 higher than in Wichita.
The Cost of Home Care vs. Other Senior Care Options in Wichita, KS
While home care is different from home health care in that it doesn’t provide medical services, in Wichita, both of these services share the average monthly cost of $4,767. Home care costs less than both assisted living and semiprivate accommodations in nursing homes. Adult day health care is a more affordable option for seniors who only need daytime assistance with daily living activities. However, these programs require seniors to travel to community centers to receive the care they need and offer organized social and recreational activities in group settings

Financial Assistance for Home Care in Wichita, KS
Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
- Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-term care insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
- Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
- Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
- Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living. Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
- Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.
