Montgomery Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Montgomery:

Montgomery Area Council on Aging (MACOA)

Address: 115 E. Jefferson St., Montgomery, AL 36117
Phone Number: (334) 263-0532

MACOA coordinates a network of home and community-based services to promote independent living for seniors. Its flagship program is Meals On Wheels (MOW), which provides hot lunches and social interaction for frail, homebound elders each weekday. The Frozen Meals program serves older residents on MOW’s waiting list. The Pet Food program brings dog and cat food to MOW participants twice a month. Active seniors can join the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) to engage with and help community agencies.

Central Alabama Aging Consortium (CAAC)

Address: 2500 Fairlane Dr., Suite 200, Montgomery, AL 36116
Phone Number: (334) 240-4680

CAAC serves seniors, people with disabilities and their caregivers through home- and community-based programs that support an independent lifestyle. As the area’s Aging and Disability Resource Center, this agency provides information and eligibility screening for benefits and services available to older residents. In-home services include Alabama Cares, Care Transitions Intervention, Elderly & Disabled Waiver, ACT Waiver, Homemaker Program and Personal Choices. CAAC also offers free civil legal assistance, congregate and home-delivered meals, nutrition counseling and the Senior Rx Program. Programs are at no cost or at a reduced rate.

Energy Assistance

Address: 1066 Adams Ave., Montgomery, AL 36104
Phone Number: (334) 263-3474

Montgomery Community Action Agency administers the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and Alabama Business Charitable (ABC) Trust Energy Assistance Program for low-income residents. These programs provide financial relief from heating and cooling costs. Seniors may also qualify for the Emergency Energy Assistance Program which offers a one-time crisis disbursement to pay for food, shelter or prescription medications.

Weatherization Assistance

Address: 430 S Court St., Montgomery, AL 36104
Phone Number: (334) 262-4300 or (866) 780-4945

Administered by the Central Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission (CARPDC), the Weatherization Assistance Program helps low-income families improve the energy efficiency, health and safety of their residences. It provides an energy audit to determine needs and cost-saving solutions. Common services include installing high-efficiency light bulbs, adding extra insulation to walls, floors and attics, sealing air leaks, and installing programmable thermostats and water heater tanks.

Catholic Social Services of Montgomery

Address: 4455 Narrow Lane Rd., Montgomery, AL 36116
Phone Number: (334) 288-8890

Catholic Social Services coordinates St. Margaret’s Senior Ministry, a program that supports seniors with free non-medical services and support. The organization advocates for clients’ physical and mental health needs and assists with obtaining secure, sanitary living accommodations. The program also offers emotional and spiritual support and helps strengthen family and community connections.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – oftentimes it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
