Montgomery, in central Alabama, is the state’s capital. The city has a population of 198,525 residents, and 14.3% of them are seniors 65 years of age and older. For medical care, Montgomery’s seniors have easy access to several facilities in the Baptist Health network. Another option is Jackson Hospital, which has an emergency department and provides specialty services such as orthopedics and spinal care. Montgomery also features relatively affordable nursing homes, according to the Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey: A typical Montgomery nursing home charges $6,540 per month for a semiprivate room, while the corresponding national average is $7,756.
Nursing homes provide comprehensive services, commonly including around-the-clock nursing care, medical monitoring and help with everyday tasks. That extensive support usually comes at a higher price point compared to other senior care options. Seniors who require less supervision may save money and find a better fit with assisted living or home health care.
This guide takes a detailed look at senior care costs, including those of nursing homes, in Montgomery. Additionally, the guide covers several Montgomery-area resources for seniors.

Our initial experience with Capitol Hill Healthcare is good. They call me if anything happens to my mother or if anything is going on with her, and they can tell me what her condition is. Anything that goes on with her, they tell me, and they seem to be doing a good job. I’m not in there because she is still in quarantine, but we’re looking at her every day through the window. They seem to be doing a good job. Looking through a glass window from the outside, it looks OK, but that’s as far as I can get because of Covid. Their staff seems nice, pleasant and professional. They call me if anything happens to or goes on with her. It’s a nice facility, but they need to cut their roses when they let people visit the window. If they’re gonna have window visits, they need to cut the roses because you have to get through a sticker bush of roses to see them.

I had my dad at John Knox Manor for a while. The facility was fine. I didn’t have any real problems with them. Compared to the other ones I saw, they were one of the better ones, but I think they do need to work on their weekend shift because it’s not very organized. We had a few minor issues with regards to follow up care, dietary matters, and response time. Their regular staff are good, though. The rooms were fine, but they are not as modern as some of the others I saw. The rooms are two rooms with an adjoining bathroom, so it’s not a private bathroom. All in all, it wasn’t as crowded as some of the others. My father has beginning dementia, and so his activities are more limited. I will say that the lady that handles the physical activity is very good. She was one of the best things there because she worked with him every day and was willing to sit down and talk about what she saw and what we could do at home; that was excellent, but they just need to upgrade the quality of their food.

My mom is in rehab at Crowne Health Care of Montgomery. We chose it because of other reviews that people have given us and some recommendations. We’ve had no problems with them, at all. What I like best about it is the care that my mom is getting. While most of the staff we’ve come in contact with were very nice though, we have come in contact with a few that were not very nice. With food, she hasn’t liked the taste of some of them. For activities, I know they have bingo, singing, and devotionals. The facility is clean and nice. They have a salon, a courtyard, a large front porch, and a dining area.

My dad moved into Hillview Terrace for long-term care. It’s very clean and the staff is very attentive. The only problem that I have is when we go and visit him, he’s still in his nightclothes. He’s no longer being dressed and that’s the only problem. We sent clothes for him to be dressed and for him to be presentable when we see him.
He’s in a shared room, but I’ve never been there because of the COVID restrictions. He’s been there about 3 months now and we’re not allowed to go into the room.
They have a courtyard. They also have a beauty salon but I don’t think the person that does the care for the beauty salon is there. The staff is great, very nice, and very polite. They’re very attentive to my questions and his needs.

My mother went through rehab at the Golden LivingCenter, and it was very good. I was very happy with them. The staff was very friendly, helpful, and very encouraging. Their rehab staff was very competent. They’re undergoing construction right now, but except for that, everything is just lovely. Their rehab is one of the few that have private rooms for their rehab patients; and on the long-term end, their nursing home offers private rooms, which were what we were the most interested in. The food was OK, but it would really take a lot of money to have a menu so diverse that everybody would be happy.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Montgomery, AL
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
Free Resources for Seniors in Montgomery, AL
As seniors grow older and face changing needs, they and their families may turn to local resources for assistance. Several examples of such resources available in Montgomery are listed below. Some of these resources’ services make it possible to remain at home longer. Others help seniors find and adapt to other care arrangements.
The CAAC operates the Aging and Disability Resource Center. The ADRC informs callers about potentially beneficial services and conducts screenings for eligibility; additionally, its agents help with applications. The CAAC also performs care coordination for seniors in its service area. Other offerings include the Senior Rx Program, which makes prescription drugs more affordable for eligible individuals, and counseling from the State Health Insurance Assistance Program, which helps seniors learn about Medicare benefits.
The LTC Ombudsman Program helps residents of long-term care facilities learn about their rights. The program also educates family members, and its representatives work to ensure high-quality care for seniors. Additionally, the program looks into and helps resolve complaints. Its services are confidential. (The CAAC facilitates ombudsmen services as well and may be a useful point of contact, too.)
The MACOA's flagship offering is Meals on Wheels. This program's drivers deliver hot lunchtime meals to homebound seniors who otherwise can't prepare food. The drivers also perform safety checks on meal recipients. Related offerings from the MACOA provide frozen food and pet food to seniors.
The MCAA may help income-eligible seniors cover their utility bills through its Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program and ABC Trust Program offerings. Additionally, the MCAA's Senior Citizen Program works to provide companionship and support to older adults.
At this office, seniors can learn about their benefits eligibility and get application assistance. The office also gives veterans information on VA health care options. Additionally, it administers certain benefits for family members and survivors of veterans.
