My father-in-law is at ADL Assisted Living, Highlands, and it's been a relief for my husband and my sister-in-law to have him there. Their care is very good. It's nice because it's a medium-sized facility. There are not too many residents. Sometimes, some rooms have two residents, so there are 16 to 20 residents total, which I think is a good and unique number. It wasn't necessarily something we were looking for, but we looked at some private homes, and they were just too small. Yet those big sprawling, resort places were out of his price range. So, this was the largest facility that he could afford, and the reputation of the care was good. There's not a lot of turnover, from what I can tell, and it's not the fanciest-looking place, but it's clean. My father-in-law has his own room, and they prepare his meals. One critique I have is that there is an outdoor space, but they don't take them out. They don't let them outside. I guess because he would not be able to go on a company, being one of the higher functioning residents. So, he's sort of independent, and the staff is busy with patients with more needs. So, he's not able to get a lot of sunshine, and that is very unfortunate, but I realize they're just busy preventing bed sores and keeping people clean, and he talks to the staff as best as he can. He has a community bathroom. Then there's a little sort of main dining area, and another little sitting area where he could sit and eat, but he did not have his own bathroom or kitchen. His place is like a bedroom with a closet and furniture. The staff is friendly. The building has a sound structure, but visually, it's not beautiful.

There is no nurse on staff at the Highlands location. There is a sitter or a med aide ... I noticed that until my mother was able as long as my mother was able to speak her care was pretty good I did go almost every day but when my mother lost the ability to speak I noticed her care started going down and ultimately she developed a bedsore which was untreated for a while got infected and that's how she died.

So far, everything's been going pretty great with ADL Assisted Living. I'm getting daily and weekly updates from the staff and from the nursing staff. I speak with my dad also 'cause he has a cellphone, so he calls and speaks with me also. The staff is very welcoming, and any questions, there's no questions I can't ask, they're always attentive to him and to me when I come, and they make sure that anything I need to give to him, for him, or whatever, they contact me, let me know, and they make sure any changes or anything like that, they're right on it to him with it. He says the food is OK. So far it's fine, they do make sure his personal hygiene is taken care of and his room. Most of the things that are done for activities right now, they've been in the media room, but I can't really say anything about activities.

The people seem to be really nice, but I'm a little concerned about some health issues. When they're handling food or handing out utensils, they don't wear gloves. Overall, I'm happy as I don't see problems with them. They only have one place designated to smoke.
