I was not interested in going to Southampton Estates because I had been there as a visitor up to 15 years ago and I always thought it was dismal, I never wanted to live there, but they have renovated and made their public rooms so much more inviting. I've known people or known of people who have very happily been there recently as residents. Their assisted living area has been improved a whole lot. It's no better or worse than the other ones, but I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. They have a nice campus. They have outdoor facilities.

Southampton Estates was nice. It looked like they were working on fixing up other parts of the facility. They had an eating area, which you could get to whether you were visiting or the employees could get food there. They had a little kitchen inside their assisted living area where they could serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks if they wanted to. It was a little kitchen area that somebody was cooking in for that area. The staff was very, very friendly, took us on a tour, asked if we had any other questions, and told us we could bring my parents there to take a look as well. They had a menu there. It looked like the residents could pick out certain food and then they had staple food. They had a list of food that they would be having the next day and they could circle whatever they wanted.

Southampton Estates is the one we visited and the one we like the most. I like the way the rooms were set up, I like the dining halls, and I like the swimming pool. I pretty much like the personnel there and how they handled things. They were good. Two people showed us around. There was one of the people that live there, and there were one or two girls that worked there, and they were very informative. They took us around and showed us everything. The tour was well, and so it was good. The resident there gave us a lot of insight on things. I would say their presentation was very good. I've tried the food there and the food was fine. The facility was excellent.

I toured Southampton Estates. I like it. It's on a lot of ground where you can take your animal out and take a walk or ride a bicycle. They're on a major road, but they're way back, so you get lots of room. To me, it was very good. The fitness center was there, and the pool was there. They have a whole connected system where you can go from one building to another without going outside. I saw a lot of good things there. The food was good, just that the name of them were fancy, but they were sandwiches. They gave me a snack and a drink. The food was very good. It was very nicely done. I was very pleased with a lot of things. I didn't see many things that were pulling me away from it except, of course, these things are expensive and the better they are, the more expensive they are, but that's OK, you're paying for that.

My sister is moving into Southampton Estates. She's going in with independent living, but it is total care. She wanted a place that had total care so she would not have to move again. It is a beautiful place, and everyone is friendly. She is looking forward to moving in. The staff are very, very nice, very friendly, and very helpful. They have a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom. They're renovating two efficiencies into an apartment for her. They have a whole list of everything that they offer there. They also can take her to the doctors or food shopping. They get one meal a day. She'll have her own kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room, and it's all very, very nice. They have doctors and specialists that come in periodically. They also have doctors on call. She is free to come and go, and free to have anybody who wants to come and visit. They could not have been more accommodating. It is very easy to get around the facility itself.

When my aunt and uncle signed their contract and moved onto an apartment at Southampton Estates in 1999 they were every happy with the food, the living arrangements, and their apartment. They spent a lot of extra money to convert 2 smaller apartments to one large space with separate living and dining rooms and 2 bedroom wings. Later they removed carpeting and had laminate floors installed at their own expense. After 15 years my aunt was purchasing groceries and cooking most of their meals instead of going to the dining room. This was to accommodate my uncle’s diet and her increasingly finicky digestive system. When my aunt had to be moved into skilled nursing to access hospice care, her husband was moved with her due to his dementia. When she passed, my uncle was housed in skilled nursing but charged a premium for a private room until there was a room available for him in the “memory care” assisted living unit. Things went down hill from there, as my uncle did not regularly shower, neither was his shower cleaned for months at a time. When he was hospitalized, I went into his room 3 days later and found his toilet and the floor of the bathroom covered in excrement. He was moved back to nursing and suffered a fall that resulted in broken glasses and a subdural hematoma, but I was told on the phone that he was “OK.” In January 2019, after many more incidents, we broke his lifetime care contract and moved him to another safer facility. Please do not judge this facility by their claim to be the “Best in Philly.” There are activities listed- only a few are for the residents in the long term care wing and they “offer” them to residents nut can’t “make” them participate.” This goes for medical interventions suggested by the house physician- if the patient refuses treatment it’s OK. Even for patients they have claimed cannot make decisions for themselves...

I had family members at Southampton Estates for 20 years in all 3 stages of care....I agree with the cleanliness issues- a bathroom was left covered in diarrhea for 3 days while my relative was hospitalized..we found broken glass the the floor of a nursing room 2x and the staff “lost” 4 pairs of Rx glasses and gave my relative readers to wear instead. He fell and was pronounced OK- and a later trip for an MRI showed he’d had a subdural hematoma that required a trip to a neurosurgeon. Lifetime care sounds like a bargain until you do the math and realize you cannot staff a nursing facility for the monthly fees from those on life care contracts. There are a few good nurses but they do not have the time to adequately care for the numbers of people who no longer can live in an apartment setting. Instead of letting me know my relative had put on a little weight, the aids dressed him in other people’s clothing. I prefer to think they were good people who simply did not have the training or the time to do the job right. We gave up the contract and moved.

Southampton Estates would be my choice. The fees start out as a monthly charge that never increases if you move from an apartment to assisted living and to nursing care. The place was very nice. There was a general store in there where people who had apartments could work. They went on trips, golfing, and took them to different facilities. If they had to go to special doctors, they would transport them if they could not drive. It was very nice in there and the apartment was quite large. They had everything, and you get a washer and dryer. They also had a washing area on the floors. It was super, and I really liked that a lot.

I visited this facility with my mom. This is an older type of facility but it was updated. It was very clean, has a nice walking trail with trees all around and it was surprisingly quiet. The studio rooms were very small; however, the single bedroom had a nice size with a little dining area with a stove. The staff was really nice and they were mostly locals. I haven't seen the residents doing the activities but I heard they have a lot. For instance, they organize outings to different local attractions, play card games, go to movies and even trips overseas.

My grandmother has received top notch care since she started living in Southampton Estates. She enjoys the activities they provide and the friends she has made. They provide excellent meals and enough options for her to eat in the dining facility or have meals in her room. She can receive safe and reliable transportation to the grocery store and the mall. We feel very secure with her living there as there is a security system in place and security guards always staff the main gates and the property. The nurses and aides are extremely kind and professional. We have never had any questions regarding her safety or care and she has never complained about any type of mistreatment. We have met many of the people on staff and have be treated with nothing but courtesy and compassion. The facilities are immaculate and always well groomed. It is positively lovely there in the spring and summer months, they do a great job making the gardens beautiful, especially around the walking paths.

This facility seems to have an empowered approach to caring and and support. However, I noticed some sanitization issues and medical errors of the staff. A nurse aide who doesn't wash her hands after touching the floor when picking up a candy rapper isn't showing professionalism by walking down into the patient room, neither is she reminding herself about patient safety when she attempts to adjust the elder's breathing device. Such issues about hygiene should be reminded to all staff members who come in contact with other humans to prevent the spread of germs and other pathogens In fact, I observed even greater contamination with care when I watched a nurse use the same pair of gloves when seeing two different elders in different rooms. The problem rose due to the speed at which she was performing her duties, but that should be balanced and cannot stand in the way of acknowledging the need to improve and maintain hand hygiene in a location with many people who as a result of such evident behavior or misbehavior face greater risk of epidemic infection.I did see some nurses and aides who held face contact with elders and shook them by their hand, stroking their shoulder and back and returning the favor of providing water when asked.
