My husband and I are in Independent Living. We have a three-bedroom, two bathroom "cottage," as they are called, all on one floor (BTW your site erroneously claims the choices are only one or two bedrooms; there are indeed many three-bedroom units). All maintenance inside or outside is included in the monthly rate, even small stuff like changing light bulbs, and the social circumstances are outstanding. The neighbors as well as the staff are very friendly, and there are lots of activities--exercise classes, book club, chess club, excursions to Cincinnati via The Knolls' bus for concerts and plays, a weekly Happy Hour, an on-site moderately priced restaurant with both eat-in, takeout, and delivery; and much more. You take part where you want, and forget the rest--there is no pressure. All utilities, cable TV, telephone, gas and electric--are included in the monthly fee. We added it up, and the monthly total here was, when we moved in three years ago, just about the same as when we lived in our own house. Yes, there is a large entrance fee (similar to a down payment on a house), but you don't own the property, so can't pass it on to your kids (although of course you can still leave the rest of your estate to them). We think it was a fair price for a very safe, convenient, and elderly-friendly lifestyle!

We had a couple of appointments with the people at The Knolls of Oxford. They were very expensive. We liked them the best of all of the places we visited, but the entrance fees and the monthly fees are unbelievable. We want to start with independent living and we've been to two or three different apartment configurations. We sat down and talked to the marketing representative, Cheryl. We had a couple of meetings with her and talked about options and she explained the entrance fee and the monthly fee and what they covered. I was very, very impressed with them. There's nothing negative about them. If we decide that my wife needs more independent living, we have an option to step up to the assisted living quarters. They have a bistro and a restaurant. They also provide a home delivery service. I rate everything a five except for the cost. It's an upscale neighborhood. They have many activities for seniors. It's a beautiful place.

The knolls is actually two facilities- a larger retirement community with small, independent living condominiums and a single assisted living facility. I inhabit the former. The grounds are clean and well-kept, and the buildings are handsome and homey. The community looks just like a regular condo development, which I think is important because except for one limitation that's all I need. I don't want to feel like I have to live somewhere special. At the same time it's good to know people can help quickly if something goes wrong. The Knolls actually offers a great many activities and classes. I sort of feel like these are for people who don't have hobbies, or friends, or a job (I'm only sixty-five so yes, I still work) But I attended a few to make my daughter happy. They seemed alright. What's really valuable in this regard is the sense of community- since most of the Knolls is run like a regular neighborhood, I've gotten to know quite a few of the people who live around me. I didn't think I'd be happy in a community of just older people, but I'll admit it's nice to be around folks who remember all the same bands and TV shows I do.
