Our schedule is set for 1 caregiver for 6 residents for all shifts The state requirement in New Mexico is 1 caregiver for 15 residents.

If Sandia House accepts dogs or cats, what indoor/outdoor areas can they enjoy?

Accepted Answer

At the current time, we do not accept furry companions in our home.  We do allow them to visit and have a rather large enclosed area for them to run around.

What transportation services does Sandia House offer to assisted living residents?

Accepted Answer

We do not offer any type of transportation within our community.  We would be more than happy to provide information for transportation.

Is Sandia House affiliated with a hospital if more care is needed?

Accepted Answer

We are assisted living, we have no affiliations with hospitals, rehab centers, or physicians.  We do have a couple of physicians who see homebound residents and are fortunate that they have chosen our homes to visit.

Who assesses residents' health and cognitive functioning? How often is that assessment repeated?

Accepted Answer

We have a nurse on staff that visits with our residents twice a month as well as our staff daily regarding our residents.  If there is a notable  change in their mental or physical behavior she will communicate that to the family.  If the resident is utilizing one of the physicians that comes to our home she will also communicate that information to them.

What places are near Sandia House or within walking distance for assisted living residents to enjoy?

Accepted Answer

Families can access a walking path if they desire with their loved one. Unlike independent living most of our residents are unable cognitively or physically to venture out on. their own. There is a small mall with a restaurant and Walgreens if families desire to take that walk with their loved one.

What ongoing senior care training does the staff receive?

Accepted Answer

Each caregiver is required to do monthly training in several areas. We assign training that is appropriate to the house community but still meets our state-required training.

What safety features or security measures does Sandia House offer to assisted living residents?

Accepted Answer

The Sandia house has cameras throughout common areas.  Our gate to the property is locked for our residents' safety as well as the house itself is only entered by a keypad. The property has an alarm and sprinkler system installed.

Describe the neighborhood around Sandia House. Is it located in a residential neighborhood, a business district, a rural setting, or other type of locale?

Accepted Answer

Sandia house is located in the North Valley.  We are situated on a street that has only one way in and one way out. Not far away there is also some businesses as well as other neighborhoods.  The north valley is quaint in its own right, not  far from the east side of town and not  far from the westside of town.

What safety features or security measures does Sandia House provide to protect residents who wander?

Accepted Answer

We have a nice outside area for the residents to enjoy.  The grounds are locked and  have cameras outside so the staff can see both patios.  The doors are locked by a key pad so our residents let us know when they would like access to the outside.  These safety measures make sure we always know where our residents are.

Besides the required training we do for our seniors, we also incorporate monthly training on Dementia and Alzheimer's care.

Describe the overall population of assisted living residents at Sandia House. What is their average age? What are their favorite things to do?

Accepted Answer

Unlike independent care, our residents have physical or cognitive issues and require our assistance with most activities of daily living.  We have had residents in their early 70s to 100!  Most of our population is female but we generally have 1-2 men in our population of residents.  Our residents enjoy bingo, crafts, and music.  We are always open to being introduced to new ideals.

What makes the chef or dining program at Sandia House exceptional? What kind of menu can assisted living residents expect?

Accepted Answer

We offer a well balanced diet in accordance with the state of NM.  We serve our residents their choice of whatever  breakfast they desier when they wake.  If lunch or dinner is not what they like we can prepare something else for them.  With a small community we are able to cater a bit more to their likes and dislikes.  We are also able to get to know those likes and dislikes and accommodate them.

How does Sandia House keep residents' families informed about their loved ones' health?

Accepted Answer

All of our families have access to the house manager, nurse, and director/owner. If there is a change in their well-being we will contact the POA immediately and update them.

What techniques does Sandia House use to support memory care residents during mealtimes?

Accepted Answer

Things that can help are cutting food up before presenting it, only giving them the cutlery that is needed, putting the cutlery or cup directly into their hand and using plates and tablecloths of different colors.
We also make sure the table is not cluttered and serve one course at a time if necessary.

We try to provide them with a consistent routine.  They know what to expect each day. In that daily routine we offer activities, exercise, movies and music.  With a small community every visitor becomes like family to them.

Accepted Answer

Listening to music, dancing, or contact with babies, children or animals provide positive feelings. People with dementia have excellent memories of past events, and looking through old photo albums, memorabilia and books can help.
