My brother-in-law moved to Bickford of Shelby Township. I have nothing but good things to say. The surroundings are beautifully kept. The staff is very professional, very courteous, and very pleasant. I'm very happy with the Bickford community. They have a game room. There's a movie night. They have taken them on a bus, and to a restaurant. They have sing days like Western Days, where the staff dress up. They had something for Father's Day, a special dinner. I'm not there so much during the day, but I know that they do have activities for the seniors if they choose to participate. All their food is made from scratch, so I am very happy. It's not inexpensive. I haven't compared that to many. I went by my overall, with the staff and the room, and how they kept things up. I would rather pay a little bit more and have some very caring people taking care of him.

Bickford of Shelby Township had a very much more social atmosphere. They had more activities and more ways for residents to get together. It was clean and welcoming. They had outside activities like outdoor trips. They have a barber/beauty salon. They have transportation. The staff was very friendly. They had a very good cafeteria style for dining. It was warm. They were having lunch and they seemed to like having lunch and being out of their room.

Bickford of Shelby Township was new. It didn't look like there were a lot of activities, and they don't accept Medicaid once your money runs out. The staff were all very friendly and engaging. They had a salon, and they had a courtyard. It's not near the hospital or restaurants, but it's near my house.

The Bickford of Shelby Township is a beautiful facility. It has a friendly staff, lots of activities for the seniors, it's very clean and just gorgeous. The only drawback is that it's very expensive. It was their memory care that I toured. The staff was friendly, they were happy, it seemed, to work there, and they interacted with the residents when we were walking around. They even interacted with my mom, who was with us looking. It's just a different atmosphere from the other memory care facilities I've looked at, for sure. I would highly recommend it to anyone. It's just that it was out of the budget we were looking to spend. They said they would encourage people to participate or come out of the rooms if things wandered off. They had lots of areas set up even in the facility itself, between the hallways, for residents to mingle in smaller groups instead of being in a large group so that was kind of nice. The rooms were set up almost like little apartments. I recall they had little mailboxes where the residents would get mail and stuff and I thought that was a nice touch too. It's a very good location, it was right next door to a Catholic church. They offered transportation to residents to take them on field trips and appointments and that kind of thing. It was close to a few of the malls, close to the hospital, and close to shopping.

Bickford of Shelby Township had a lot of turnover of administration in the time my mother in law was there. The building was designed nice, until they had some building issues that they never should have had. They had pipes freeze that caused flooding in the place. This was like their sixtieth facility, and many of them were in the Midwest, and they encountered that twice. It flooded the lobby area and the activity room, and it took months for the repairs. It was just an ongoing debacle basically there. She actually waited for the building to be completed before she moved in as one of the first residents. They delayed their opening because they had put together the kitchen wrong, they had to tear out the kitchen floor, and redo it before they could get the certificate of occupancy. The food was excellent though. They had salon services but the thing they didn't have together was they had promised that within a 25 mile radius, they would have provided transportation for them to continue to go to their doctors' appointments and stuff, but because of their turnover in staff, it didn't happen. With the family members complaining enough, they finally got it together after four or five months. They said, "If you make your appointments on Wednesday afternoons, we'll have somebody drive you.", but that wasn't the amenity that they said it would be. They didn't have a dedicated bus driver and they were pulling the guy who was the gardener/maintenance guy to drive the bus on Wednesday afternoon to take people. Bickford never had their act straight.
