My grandfather fell and broke his hip in January of 2011. He had surgery and then was placed in Spectrum Health's Rehab and nursing center for rehab. We visited often and I became more comfortable with every visit. At first the place was a little crazy. There were a lot of residents, some with dementia and they would yell for help. My grandfather received rehab there 5 days a week and the nurses were wonderful. The staff was always polite but you could tell they were also very overworked. My grandfather was very upset at first, being a very independent person he did not want to be catered to. After awhile he developed relationships with "the girls" who were really CNAs (Certified Nurse Assistants). After about 8 months in rehab he was released home and now lives with us. I have a better view now of nursing homes and I think if you are selective it is possible to find a good home for your family.
