"I have a lot of friends here. It's really easy to meet people because there are a lot of activities. We just had a big St. Patrick's Day celebration. Usually the celebrations are followed with a meal in the cafeteria. They have special programs with music or dancing. We had Irish singers and Irish dancers here. We have a lot of standing committees, like a Parkinson's committee that meets. We also have a council meeting and programs for art and painting. Right now, we only have a Catholic service, so I'm trying to get a Protestant service going. I just wrote a book of prayers that they are going to publish. It will help people who have trouble knowing what to pray for or how to pray. It's a good choice. There are people that are mostly independent, but they have somebody doing their laundry. We have housekeepers that come in once a week. If anything happens, like you spill on the carpet or something, they will come in off schedule. They will clean the carpeting for you and help you clean up any mess you make by accident. The staff are very sympathetic. They have a lot of work to do, but they have a good sense of humor. They always greet you in the morning. In the afternoon, they ask how things are. When you put your call light on, they come pretty much on time. They provide meals three times a day, plus they have a bistro with snacks. Food is not very ethnically related. I think people would enjoy having different types of foods, like Italian and Mexican. They have some of that, but probably not enough. This is a beautiful, beautiful place. It is always kept very clean. They vacuum the carpeting every day. They pick up any messes that are left in the hall. We empty our garbage outside of our door, and they always pick it up (practically before you close the door). They are open to new activities. I would say that the value for the dollar is good."

"My mom will be moving into The Arboretum Senior Living. There you can be in the same apartment and just transition from independent to assisted. It's very woodsy, their location, and they have nice balconies in their rooms. It's large and feels like nature rather than a hospital. The staff was very friendly. The residents were all out and about, doing puzzles, playing cards, and socializing. It just seemed like more of a homey place rather than institutionalized. Although I liked the person that was giving the tour, I had to ask her to see a lot of things. I asked where the storage lockers are, where the garbage goes, or where the laundry is. So, I was asking more of the questions; but she was very nice and very friendly. Once I asked the question, she showed them to me immediately. They have a beauty salon. They have an onsite doctor that comes in every two weeks. They have an onsite psychologist. They have a walking path with a pond where the residents go to feed ducks and turtles on site. They have a small library, dining, and kind of a separate area for their programs like their activities and exercise classes. They don't have a separate room for it, but it's like a cordoned-off area where a folding door closes. That's why we chose The Arboretum because it felt woodsier and kind of protected and not being wide and out in the open with bad views."

"I went to Hart Park Square Senior Living. They were very nice, but I think the youngest person there was probably 80. They don't have skilled nursing there. They just have some assisted stuff. They have the bingo and the typical things that one thinks of as kind of the traditional nursing home or senior facility. That's not my generation. They had a lot of activities. They have Sheepshead, which is a card game, which I don't play, things that my parents would probably like to do rather than me. The staff was very nice and they did provide meals there. They were a little bit cheaper, but their rooms were smaller. They didn't have central air-conditioning. They had a unit in the wall in the living room. I asked what about the bedroom? She said, "The cooling from the living room will go into the bedroom" and I didn't like that. They were very close to a railroad track. The people that we encountered seemed happy and seemed nice, but I just knew when I walked in, that this one is not for me. It was clean, but I didn't like the air-conditioning setup and that the rooms were smaller."

"The independent living at Library Square Senior Living was very nice. The person who gave the tour took us all over and was very pleasant. I felt very comfortable. The rooms were a little smaller than what I wanted, but I would fit in fine. It's very clean and has a lot of activities for the residents. It was an older building, but it was still kept up very well. They have underground and surface parking, but there was a waiting list for parking inside. The area is very nice, and the person who gave the tour was very personable."

"Howard Village Senior Living is pretty much what I am looking for. However, I wanted a better exercise room, and they only have a few little things: a bike, but not a full gym. The staff was very welcoming, very friendly, and very thorough. The building was excellent. It was very clean, very neat, very bright, and had a welcoming environment."
