Located in the Puget Sound inlet at the foot of Mount Rainier, Federal Way is a scenic city with an abundance of cultural and natural amenities. While it has a relatively young population with seniors accounting for less than 14% of its 100,000 residents, the city offers a range of benefits to retirees. It features exceptionally comfortable weather year-round and high access to health care, and the lack of state income taxes helps retirement income stretch further. Museums, botanical gardens and annual festivals provide entertainment for seniors and visiting family members, and the local senior center offers engaging social and recreational activities throughout the year.
Federal Way also has several assisted living facilities to meet the needs of seniors who require daily assistance. These facilities don’t provide extensive medical care, but they offer basic personal care services, housing and meals. On average, Federal Way seniors in assisted living pay $5,750 monthly.
In this guide, readers can find more information on assisted living costs in Federal Way, along with details on how seniors pay for monthly care expenses. It also highlights top resources for seniors in Federal Way and breaks down some basic rules that govern local assisted living facilities.

They’re very caring about their residents. Everything was done very professionally. I felt it was run in a way that made me feel like this would be a good fit for my mother.
We saw both their assisted living and their memory care. The one room that we did see was vacant, so it was nice and clean. There were no odors or anything offensive about it. The carpet looked new and it had been replaced. It was very upbeat and bright.
We were there early in the morning, so there wasn’t too much going on. A few people were watching TV or wandering around, just stretching their legs and things like that. A few people were eating their breakfast, but not a whole lot going on as yet. They had a gathering area with a fireplace and TV. They had eating areas. They had washer and dryer laundry facilities. I visited the public restroom and it was very clean. There was nothing that turned us off about it. We were impressed with everything.

COVID-19 Rules for Assisted Living in Federal Way
Since most COVID-19 rules for Assisted Living Communities and other Senior Living Facilities are set at the state level, you can view the specific rules for your state on our Guide to Assisted Living in Washington. Keep in mind that every community has specific policies that they put in place to protect their residents, so you should contact your local community for more information. Additionally, you can contact your local Area Agency on Aging to learn more – find contact information here.
What to Consider About Assisted Living in Federal Way
The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services governs assisted living facilities in Federal Way and the rest of the state. It publishes guidelines related to minimum care, housing and nutrition service standards, and it has an up-to-date directory of all licensed assisted living facilities in the state.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Federal Way
- The cost of living in Federal Way rates 134.1 on a 100-point scale based on national norms, indicating that this city is a relatively expensive place to live. Transportation and housing costs are considerably higher here than in other Washington cities, but seniors may save money on these and other living expenses by moving into residential communities.
- Violent crime occurs at about the same rate in Federal Way as in most U.S. cities, but property crime is more prevalent here. On a 100-point scale, with higher ratings indicating more crime, Federal Way rates 23.1 for violent crime and 78.6 for property crime. This is higher than the national respective scores of 22.7 and 35.4. Residential care is a popular alternative to living alone for seniors concerned about crime.
- Federal Way residents enjoy comfortable weather throughout the year, making the city a great destination for seniors seeking a mild climate for their retirement years. Daytime winter temperatures average in the upper-40s to low-50s, and summers are ideal with temperatures in the mid-70s and generally low humidity levels.
- Health care is accessible in Federal Way and costs tend to be economical, benefiting older adults who need regular care. Health expenses, such as hospital stays and doctor’s office visits, are about 20% below the national norm, and there are 308 doctors per capita, about 50% more than in the United States as a whole. St. Francis Hospital is within the city proper and provides 24-hour emergency services, telehealth services and primary and specialty care.
- The air quality in Federal Way may be a consideration for older adults vulnerable to environmental pollutants. Ozone pollution levels are sometimes high here, earning the region a C grade from the American Lung Association. The region gets a passing score for annual particle pollution but an F for short-term particle pollution. Fortunately, assisted living facilities host indoor activities throughout the year, and many invest in ventilation systems, helping seniors stay active and healthy.
- Washington doesn’t have a state income tax, which may help seniors afford long-term care expenses in Federal Way.
Paying for Assisted Living in Federal Way
While care costs may vary depending on factors such as location and amenities, monthly assisted living rates in Federal Way average $5,750.
The Cost of Assisted Living in Nearby Cities
Seniors in Federal Way pay $5,750 for assisted living, which is very high compared to the national norm of $4,500 but economical compared to Washington’s average of $6,000. In Seattle, care costs are $1,000 higher than in Federal Way at $6,750, but in Mount Vernon, rates are a little lower at $5,500. Seniors in Longview pay $5,300, $450 less than in Federal Way, and in Olympia, costs are nearly $1,000 less at $4,805.
The Cost of Other Types of Senior Care
Assisted living is one of the more affordable long-term care options in Federal Way, with seniors paying approximately $5,750 for monthly care. Cost data for adult day health care isn’t available locally, but statewide, rates average $2,600, so this may be a cost-effective alternative for some seniors. In-home care is costlier than assisted living at $6,673, and seniors who need skilled nursing at home pay $7,007 for home health care. Nursing home care is pricier, with monthly costs starting at $10,479.
Nursing Home Facility (semiprivate room)
Note: Data for Federal Way was unavailable, so data for the nearest city, Bremerton, was used instead.
Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Federal Way
Some financial assistance is available in Washington via Medicaid for assisted living, depending on circumstances. Available programs in the state include a Home and Community-Based Services waiver known as the Community Options Program Entry System (COPES), as well as the Medicaid Personal Care (MPC) program. Assisted living support is also available through the Community First Choice Option (CFCO) and the New Freedom Program.
Learn more about these programs, plus who’s eligible, on our Assisted Living in Washington page.
More Ways to Pay for Assisted Living

- Veterans Benefits
- Life Insurance Policy
- Long-Term Care Insurance
- Reverse Mortgage
For more information about different ways to finance assisted living, visit our Assisted Living in Washington page.
