The entire staff works hard to ensure the needs of my parents are met at every level. For example, Waltonwood staff provide the needed support and care to my parents, one with physical limitations and the other with dementia. In addition, the staff are always friendly and helpful which means a great deal. The concierge, medical techs, aides and nurses have treated my parents with respect and compassion like they were members of their own family. My parents feel that the food is top-rate, the residents and staff are friendly and the activities, such as art history lectures, movies, and music have been very enriching. Sunrise at Reston Town Center was fairly new, clean, and well maintained. Residents were moving around and they were friendly. We talked to the receptionist and the person that showed us around was very knowledgeable and showed us two different sizes of rooms. I had taken a whole list of questions to ask, and he answered every single one of them. I was very pleased. He showed us a calendar of events for the month and told us where they were. He took us to the room where they can watch TV or watch movies. They can watch movies every night, which was right down from where their model rooms were. The rooms were unfurnished, but you could rent from them if you wanted to. They could have a microwave in the room, but the resident had to prove that they can handle using microwaves, and that they wouldn’t burn themselves or drop something hot on themselves. I think there’s a small refrigerator that they could keep drinks in and those kinds of things. We went into a room that was furnished and decorated and it was very nice.

My mother moved into the Morningside House of Leesburg. The good thing is they offer assisted living, plus they offer four levels of care. Normally, you may have to go to just over a long-term facility, but this one was more flexible. That was one good feature that we did like about that. The staff members were very accommodating, very flexible. They gave us various room options that they had available. We toured at least four or five different rooms. We struck it pretty good here with multiple openings of rooms available to choose from, so that was a good thing. My mom was at a rehab facility, and they came over to the rehab facility in-person to evaluate her to see what level of care she would need. They were very friendly.
They have a game room where they do come in, and people are participating and doing things. They have a big whiteboard, and they’re playing games. They got a TV area also where people watch shows, and they do Sunday service where you can watch your local listings or whatever on TV. People gather around for that as well, so the combination seemed very, very well. We’re very happy with it. Everyone has their own private room with the dorm door closes. You’re not separated by a curtain. So it was very nice, and we do like that a lot. We heard a piano playing, and a guy was singing songs or whatever. They were gathered around just listening; people were happy and cheery. They wanted to keep you interactive. They have three floors, and on each floor, it was like a different kind of thing. The main floors got stuff; you can play cards, you got a library to read books, and a little quiet area. So it was much nicer and bigger.

We went to look at Reflections – A Senior Living Community. There was no garden area. All they had was just the front porch. It was a smaller facility, like an enlarged house, but maybe doubled. You sit on the front porch, and the main drag of route seven is right in front of you. So it wasn’t as quaint, quiet, and comforting, I guess.
All the rooms were different because it was like a house, an enlarged house. It was not like someone built an apartment complex where every apartment is very, very similar. Each room was kind of unique, which was kind of cool, but it was more in price. For the different levels of care, the price definitely would jump. The smaller facility had not much to offer. It seemed like they only had one little room where the patients would gather and play or have entertainment. The staff was very knowledgeable, very accommodating, showed us different rooms with different floors, what was going on, and walked us around the facility. They have a cafeteria. The structure layout was good.

The Kensington Reston Assisted Living is a beautiful facility. It provides assisted living care for people going through physical difficulties, as well as for people who have memory difficulties. We are about to move from a modest room where we have the opportunity to evaluate whether we want to make our stay here permanent. And as a matter of fact, we are going to be moving into a two-bedroom unit, and I will be moving in with him as well. The staff members are exceptionally kind and attentive, and they have a very good staff-to-residents ratio. They’re very flexible on visiting, and they are very careful about security. They have basement parking or underground parking. It’s the most beautiful place, and it has only been open since February, so everything is brand new and very attractive. He enjoys the outdoor patio; there is a huge outdoor patio and he likes that. They have games, a book club, happy hour, movie night, and daily exercise. He likes to play Jeopardy, crossword puzzles, and a music game where they identify the singer, composer, or name of the tune. There are opportunities all day for both resting and participating in activities with other people. The dining area is lovely and accommodates up to six people to a round table, or four people to a smaller table. They have several areas, and there’s a place where you can dine with your family or friends that is separated by a sliding-glass door so that you can have a private party. You can eat outside on the patio, or you can eat in a bistro-type setting where you can get snacks. The food is wonderful and it’s presented in a very artistic way, so it’s very appealing. Also, you can get many choices and order off a menu. You don’t have a specific time where you have to be in the dining room, or a specific, limited meal. There are at least a dozen or more choices every day for every meal. It’s expensive, but it’s worth it.

It seemed to be a nice facility. The elderly seemed content and caretakers were pleasant and friendly. Facilities were clean and decorated agreeably. This assisted living facility invites the Girl Scouts into their building quite often to sing for the elderly. Other facilities I have visited have not had the same air of friendliness or community as this one. Although some of the elderly are senile or otherwise unable to communicate, they seem comfortable and chatty with each other and with the volunteers. The cafeteria is pleasant and the food served is good. The facility is overall high quality and a comfortable place for the elderly. I find that when looking at elderly care it is important to consider the quality of entertainment that is provided, and that may be less than average at this facility. There don’t seem to be regular community nights or interesting activities here. Other than that, it’s not a bad place and I would recommend it to any senior living in the Virginia area.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Ashburn
Assisted living facilities in Virginia are monitored and regulated by the Virginia Department of Social Services. However, the day-to-day responsibility of ensuring assisted living facilities comply with the Code of Virginia is conducted by the Division of Licensing Programs. It has the authority to conduct unannounced inspections and to revoke licenses from underperforming assisted living facilities.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Ashburn
- Based on a U.S. average of 100, Ashburn’s average cost of living is 151. Although this is significantly higher, seniors in assisted living might like to know that the primary drivers are housing and transportation costs, the former of which is less likely to affect them. However, seniors should also know that the city’s health care costs are below the state and national averages.
- Seniors in Ashburn looking for free and subsidized curb-to-curb rideshare services should contact NV Rides, a nonprofit staffed by volunteers that connects people with various other nonprofits throughout Northern Virginia. The primary service in Loudoun County is Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers. Seniors concerned about safety can be assured every driver has passed the training program and criminal and DMV checks.
- Seniors in Ashburn are within easy reach of some of the best health care providers in the country. Ashburn’s primary medical facility is the Inova Loudoun Hospital, a nationally ranked facility, one of the top 10 in the Washington D.C. area and #13 in the Commonwealth of Virginia. There are also a significant number of physicians registered to attend seniors with Medicare plans.
- Ashburn’s seniors live in a safer environment than most in the country. In addition to many residing in assisted living facilities with 24/7 surveillance systems, Ashburn’s very low crime statistics also add to the general sense of security. Averages for violent crime and property crime are around a quarter of what they are in the country and half those experienced in other parts of Virginia.
- Although Ashburn gets eight fewer sunny days than the U.S. average and an additional 4 inches of rain, its seniors also encounter less snow. The climate is generally favorable for older residents, with lows in winter tending to settle at around 23 degrees and summer highs at a warm 87 degrees. Taking everything into account, Ashburn has one of the more pleasant climates in Virginia.
