"American House Spring Lake was nice. It had a two-bedroom-two-bathroom that it could have gotten there, but the view out the window kind of turned me off because it was overlooking the parking lot. I don't want to spend my days looking at a parking lot. The apartment itself was great, but the view was horrible. The person I spoke with was very patient because I don't move fast because I use a walker. She was very patient and very thorough about what was available. I got the chance to see most of the facilities, and they seemed to be nice. Everything looked good. She had put some effort into my visit to the point that she had a little gift bag for me with some stuff in it. I saw the weight room, and they had a laundry service, too."

"I toured Woodland Gardens. That one was very nice as well. They have a live-in guy, which is kind of cool. So he's there all the time, and then he has a couple of days off where other people come in. Other than the ones who came in to help out when we were there, he was making cookies and making lunch and doing it all. He lives right there, so there's somebody there at night all the time. They don't have to worry about somebody calling in at night to not show up or somebody having to work a double because somebody doesn't show up or whatever. I guess all their buildings have a live-in person. They have up to six residents. They have single rooms with half baths. They have a tub and shower room that they can shower in, and the bathroom itself has a toilet and a sink. The manager-owner himself came out, and all of those who were working there were very knowledgeable about everything as well. He'd been there for four years, the fellow that lives there. He was doing laundry, and there was a pile of laundry on the couch that had to be folded."

"We went to Care Cardinal. We liked the facility and its size. It was personal. The staff was fantastic. The staff gave us a sheet, and she also explained very well what is included and what daily life looks like, and things like that, so that was fantastic. They have a kitchen with staff. They provide three meals a day. They have a common room. There are TVs in every room. You can personalize your room however you want. That was a good thing for us, too."

"I toured Harbor Homes Norton Shores. I'm impressed with the staff and people who are in the building. The facility was very good. The rooms were very good. The layout was very nice and easy to move around. They have four separate buildings. Each one of the buildings has its dining room, and they're very clean and very nice. It has a very good atmosphere. It's close to everything, shopping and all that. It's also close to a hospital in case something happens, they don't have far to go."

"My father has moved into American House Holland. What made us choose this place is the location, the friendliness of the staff, and the knowledge and condition of everybody in the building as well as the building itself. It's very clean. My father has a 350-square-foot studio apartment. It's very nice and open. He has large windows for plenty of outside viewing. And it's conveniently located close to where he eats, so he doesn't have to walk very far."

"Freedom Village Holland was very nice. The food was excellent. The staff was very good, but you have to move to Holland. They don't have garages. The grounds are not pretty, but they have a beautiful facility. We've stayed there overnight. Their activities are very good. It costs more there, so you don't get as much value for your money, but I still think they're great. They have bus activities, they have travel activities, they go to different countries as groups, they have a full-size Olympic swimming pool in the facility, a jacuzzi, and a hot tub. They have an attached care facility. It's a quality unit. There's nothing wrong with that facility other than it's just big. It's seven stories and big problem is the slow elevators. If you want to go to supper, you take your time."

"Mom was at American House Jenison for three weeks. The staff was very friendly. The nurses called me to find out how my mom was when she went into the hospital. They're just very nice. They worked very quickly to get my mom a little apartment there when she was in rehab. It was a smooth transition. They made it happen by coming over to the rehab facility to get my mom all signed up to go to the American House. She was in a studio plus. The food was so much better than the other rehab place. My mom barely ate at the rehab, but she was pretty into it at American House. I think the lighting was a little dark in the hallways. I know they're kind of working to get that lighting updated. It wasn't a real joyful walk from the dining room to her room. Other than that, it's a nice facility, and it's smaller, so they get a lot more personal attention. Upkeep and maintenance were good."

"My sister-in-law is now at White Lake Assisted Living & Memory Care. They have gone out of their way to help us. They got her in right away. Everything was taken care of. And they've been very good with her since then. Everyone is very pleasant. My sister-in-law enjoys the food. She was not eating before she went in there, so she's eating meals that she didn't eat before. So it has helped her quite a bit. With regard to upkeep, it's clean. And people talk to you as you go down the hall. It's been very good."

"I don't think Grand Village Assisted Living & Memory Care is for my mom, but it is a beautiful facility, and the staff there was wonderful. They did offer us refreshments. She had fresh blueberry muffins that were just incredible when we got there. It's very peaceful. They offer activities. The staff was absolutely kind, wonderful, and very accommodating to any questions we had. I can't get over their kindness. They interact well with the residents, and it's nice to see."

"I like Rivertown Ridge. It's newer. It's four years old. The people are very friendly. We went through independent living to their memory care. They were very helpful. People were coming up and introducing themselves. They have a large area for walking, a tennis court, and a lovely outdoor pool. It's just a nice feeling. In terms of cleanliness, it's very clean and very well taken care of."

"The Cortland Wyoming was very nice. However, the colors of the rooms were pretty dark. Other than that, it was great. They had a lot of extra things for seniors. They were awesome. "Mom just got transferred here. We really like the people there. They're really friendly and bent over backwards to help people, and they seem to work well with people with dementia. She has a nice big room with windows that let a lot of sunshine in. She's happy with her room. It's a private studio. They have activities all the time during the day for the dementia people. They have trips where they go to the store and do stuff in the area. They have a courtyard so you can go outside. They've got it all. It's all fenced in, so you don't have to worry about your parents wandering off. My mom was really happy with the first meal she had there. It's really nice the way it was laid out."

"The staff are very courteous and helpful. The food has also improved quite a bit since the hiring of a new chef. Recently, they have started having family events for the residents. The most recent was for Mother's Day weekend where the staff hosted a brunch for the residents and their visiting family members. Excellent food and decorations."

"When Mom was recovering from a TIA in a nursing home, she realized how much she enjoyed living with other people. For thirty years after Daddy died, she had lived alone. Gradually her physical stamina had diminished and her world grew smaller and smaller. Less driving, no longer able to attend church, she decided that she didn't want to go ut back to an empty house. After visiting all the available assisted living facilities in the Grand Haven area, I took her to Christian Haven. We toured the facility and as we left, Mom said, "This is the only place that speaks to my spirit." I could rave about the fabulous made-from-scratch food, the 15 activities each week, the phenomenal medical staff, the gentle shower aids, and the immaculate housekeeping. All are amazing. But the spiritual, emotional, and intellectual nurturing is is priceless. Mom is happy, safe, and content. I thank God every day for Christian Haven. "
