Laurel is a historic Maryland community located almost exactly halfway between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. About 25,600 people live within the city limits of Laurel, 9.5% of whom are seniors aged 65 and over, with tens of thousands more in the surrounding communities of Anne Arundel and Prince George’s County. The scenic Patuxent river runs through the center of town, once the site of a water wheel mill and now lined with forested hiking trails and parks open to the public.

Assisted living facilities in Laurel offer seniors board and care, plus caregiver assistance with activities of daily living. This can be an ideal living arrangement for seniors who need more help to thrive than living alone gives them, but who don’t need the 24-hour care available in a nursing home. Seniors in Laurel pay an average of $5,000 a month for assisted living. This is the same rate seniors pay on average in the rest of Maryland, but roughly $700 a month more than the national average of $4,300.

This guide goes over assisted living options in Laurel. It also provides free resources to support aging citizens and promote their independence.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Laurel

Assisted living facilities in Laurel are overseen by the Maryland Department of Health’s Assisted Living Office. This office publishes regulations governing the operation of senior residential communities, conducts regular and unannounced site visits and hears feedback from members of the public.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Laurel

  • Laurel is ideally positioned between the warm, humid interior of the District of Columbia and the cool sea breezes from the Chesapeake Bay. As a result, the area’s climate is mild to warm in summer and mild to cool in winter. Active seniors can get outdoors year-round and enjoy activities such as swimming, hiking and snowball fights.
  • Laurel’s cost of living is higher than the national average, but seniors may find several common expenses less expensive than the average nationwide. Health care is 7% less expensive in the city than the national average.
  • Seniors are relatively safe in Laurel, which has very low rates of violent crime. Theft rates are close to the national average in the urban area around Laurel, but public spaces are generally safe for seniors to enjoy.
  • Maryland is the only state that has both an estate and inheritance tax. However, the state does not tax income from Social Security and 401(k)s, but IRAs and other types of retirement income may be subject to state tax.
  • Seniors are spoiled for choice among the area’s many public transportation systems. The Washington Metropolitan Transportation Authority (WMTA) operates several regular bus routes through Laurel, as well as paratransit services for riders with limited mobility, while the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) provides a similar service throughout central Maryland. The MARC Train system offers rail service throughout the D.C.-Baltimore corridor, while Prince George’s County residents can get dial-a-ride service through Call-a-Bus and Call-a-Cab, both of which prioritize disabled and senior passengers in poorly serviced areas.

Active seniors have a lot to like about Laurel and the surrounding areas of central Maryland. The countryside around Laurel has multiple walking and hiking trails, as well as several scenic parks that are open to the public. Closer to the city center, the built-up areas of town have many Colonial brick buildings lining streets with art festivals and Christmas light displays every year.
