My mother has moved into Seagrass Village of Port Orange. It’s somewhat similar to what she was in before. It’s assisted living, but it doesn’t have a nursing home feel. It’s an apartment with a living room and a bedroom. It feels more independent, even though it’s assisted living. They seem to have a lot of activities. They have Cheers Hour where they gather in the little open atrium and you can get wine or soda or something like that. I wasn’t able to make it, but they had a Mother’s Day tea yesterday. They do pool aerobics in the mornings. They have a theater room where they have a Wii in there and play games and stuff.
The rooms are pretty big. Mom’s got a lot more space than where she was in Mississippi. They have a nice small kitchenette area with a full-size refrigerator. They have a nice little balcony. They’re very nice, clean, and spacious. They have a pool and they’ll barbecue and stuff out there. They have a salon, a physical therapy room, a fitness room, a theater room, and a little bar area where they do that cheers thing up in the evening. The staff is good. I’ve been trying to get some medications for my mom, so they’ve been helping me navigate with the insurance and trying to get it covered. They got her set up with doctors that will come out to her. The nurses are very nice. Everyone’s very nice, friendly, and helpful. The food is good. I’ve eaten lunch there a couple of times with her and we’ve had dinner, and the food is good. It’s expensive, but most places are.

I would give Heritage Waterside Luxury Senior Living an amazing review. They were very accommodating, the residents that we interacted with were very happy, and everyone knew each other by name from looking at the back of someone’s head. It’s just more of an independent living facility that my dad is not, at this time, able to be in. We would have wanted that for him.
They can approve or reject applications to move in and that was to me, very impressive. Initially, it was disappointing because they could not provide my dad the care that he needed, but I appreciated the honesty of letting us know rather than putting him in there and him failing.
They have daily activities but it was more relaxed. They would provide a few things here and there, but again, more independent living than assisted. The assistance is if you don’t need a whole lot like maybe for medicine, if you have to be reminded and you need them to bring it to you, then that’s good and they can do that. As far as past that, they just told us that they were not able to accommodate the needs that the doctors had for my father and I appreciated the honesty.
The rooms were pristine, very neat, very organized, and very clean. Everything was very clean, no complaints about that. We were hoping that they would accept dad because of it being on the water and my dad loves the water and fishing. It didn’t work out, which it wasn’t meant to be. The tour we had was on short notice but they had no problem accommodating and taking us around and it was beautiful.

My 92yo mother was a long term resident, 4 years total. She started in Independent Living where she enjoyed using all the facilities and made many friends. As her dementia progressed she moved into different levels of care. She was always able to be moved into an exact floor plan as her previous apartment which made each transition easier.
Her care throughout her stay there was excellent. Each level recognized her needs and her care changed accordingly.
Mom shared her apartment as she entered moderate and late dementia and the staff ensured she was paired with another lady who meshed well. As she entered her late stage dementia the nurses and caregivers were beyond excellent.
As to basics, the entire facility is spotless, the food was very good and plentiful. Mom had a complete apartment that was cleaned continuously and her laundry done weekly. Her physical care was also excellent. The caring staff always ensured mom was dressed and groomed daily, her nails carefully maintained and beautiful. There were daily activities for the residents in the skilled nursing and participation was encouraged. Bingo, was her favorite.
I am so thankful we found this wonderful facility and as my mother has recently passed I can only say this was absolutely the right place.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Ormond Beach
The Agency for Health Care Administration licenses assisted living facilities in Ormond Beach and the rest of Florida. This agency publishes a directory of licensed assisted living facilities in the state as well as information on minimum licensure requirements. It also fields and investigates reports of substandard care or unfair treatment in assisted living facilities throughout the state.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Ormond Beach
- Florida doesn’t impose an income tax, letting seniors retain a high portion of their retirement income. This may make long-term care costs affordable for seniors considering this city for assisted living.
- Ormond Beach’s air quality is exceptional, which may make the city a good option for older adults with breathing or heart conditions. The American Lung Association gives the region the highest scores available for ozone, short-term particle and annual particle pollution, putting the region among the cleanest metropolitan areas in the country.
- While there are no hospitals in Ormond Beach, over a dozen are within driving distance, including AdventHealth Daytona Beach and Halifax Health Medical Center, both of which are within 5 miles of the city in Daytona Beach. There are about 175 doctors per capita, which is a little less than the national average of 210, but health care costs are 5% below national norms and may provide cost savings for older adults.
- Ormond Beach residents experience warm weather throughout the year, with daytime temperatures falling between 68 and 90 degrees. The city gets about 50 inches of rain, and humidity levels in the late summer tend to be very high. While this may be a consideration for those who are sensitive to heat, many assisted living facilities ensure seniors’ comfort throughout the year with in-room thermostats, swimming pools and indoor recreational opportunities.
- On a 100-point crime index that assigns higher values to communities with more crime, Ormond Beach rates 28.7 for violent offenses and 53 for property-related incidents. This is compared to respective national ratings of 22.7 and 35.4. These rates may make assisted living a good alternative to living alone for seniors in Ormond Beach.
