York Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in York:

Weatherization Assistance Program

Address: 28 East Market Street, 3rd Floor, York, PA 17401
Phone Number: (717) 771-9870 ext 1744

The Weatherization Assistance Program is funded by the Department of Energy and the city of York. The program reduces the heating and cooling bills of low-income households with a priority given to high energy users, such as seniors and families with young children. Services provided by the program include window and door weather stripping, broken glass replacement, attic and basement insulation and hot water heater repairs. There is no charge for any of the services provided.

Transportation

Phone Number: 1-800-632-9063

Rabbittransit offers a free fare card to seniors aged 65 and over in York. This card provides free unlimited bus rides within the city on fixed routes. The card is funded by the state lottery and all seniors are eligible for the card. Those who need transport outside of the fixed bus routes can use the shared ride system. To be eligible for this system seniors must be 60 or older and without access to private transportation. Each ride has a fixed cost and the destination has to be pre-approved.

Home-Delivered Meals

Address: 100 West Market Street, York, PA 17401
Phone Number: (717) 771-9610

The York County Agency on Aging runs a home-delivered meals program to provide nutrition to homebound seniors who have no other means of accessing healthy food on a regular basis and are no longer able to prepare meals for themselves. The meals are delivered three days a week by volunteers and seven meals are provided over the course of the week, including three hot meals, two cold lunch bags and two frozen meals. The volunteers are able to briefly check on the well-being of seniors when delivering the meal and will report any issues to the relevant authorities or family members. There is no charge for the service but donations are appreciated.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program

Address: 28 East Market Street, 3rd Floor, York, PA 17401
Phone Number: (717) 771-1100

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program is a federally funded program that aims to assist low-income households to pay their heating bills through energy grants. This is a one-time payment that is sent directly to the utility company or fuel provider which is then credited to the household bill. The cash grants are based on household size, income and fuel type. Additional grants are available to those facing a heating crisis due to their services being terminated or broken equipment that needs to be fixed. Income limits and household size limits do apply.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – oftentimes it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
