"My sisters and I were SO impressed with the care we received from Always Best Care Cleveland South for our father. The caregivers were experienced, friendly, reliable and trustworthy. We were relieved to know that we could count on the help dad needed since our lives are so busy as well. Even when we had last minute changes to our crazy schedules, we'd call the scheduling office and they would accommodate our needs. Our minds were so at ease knowing we could rely on Always Best Care. Speaking for my sisters as well, we all would highly recommend Always Best Care to anyone looking for in-home care for a loved one."

"I'm using Home Instead Senior Care and the provider's name is Alicia. It's been about two years and it's one day a week for three hours. The agency itself is very good. They work with me very well. If I need schedule adjustments or if they have schedule adjustments, they always communicate with me and let me know. They match me up very good with the caregiver. I've had two permanent caregivers so far and both were good. One I think is no longer with the company, but the one I have now is awesome. I get housekeeping. I get help with vacuuming my floors, cleaning my bathrooms, making my bed and things like that. No personal care. I think it's a very good company."

"I am in a wheelchair and depend on my husband for everything. When we learned that he needed surgery, we knew we would need 24/7 care over a period of days following his procedure. We didn't know the time of surgery until the afternoon before, so we didn't know when to start service until the last minute. We also didn't know how long I would need help because that depended on the outcome of his surgery. I was so relieved when we arrived home from the hospital and care giver and the coordinator were on our porch, ready to jump in. Home Instead was flexible in hours post surgery to give us the coverage we needed. The coordinator and care givers came to our home a few days before surgery to practice with me, so I think we all felt more comfortable when our service began and the care givers were very responsive. Everyone from the nurse who performed our assessment to the coordinator to the care givers were kind and professional. We were nervous about relying on these services at the beginning of our preparations but are quite comfortable now. We will always Make Home Instead our first choice when we need help in the future."

"I chose Right at Home because I interviewed them several years ago for services for my mother. We did not use their services at the time, however I remembered how personable and engaging the staff was so when I needed services post surgery for a couple of weeks I chose them. The office staff were helpful and they agreed to send one person to cover all 5 visits. ShaVonne was everything I needed. She was kind, warm, competant, and a pleasure to work with. She assisted with showering, washing my hair, removing the bandage on the last day and some light housekeeping, laundry, and food prep, in Shaker Heights,OH."

"I have used Cherished Companions in the past and am again using them to help me with my husband's care. Because of our past and positive experience with the agency, I immediately turned to them when it was determined that due to his weakened condition he had become a high risk for falling and returning to the hospital. Since we are still in our home and I am his primary caregiver, I needed someone to come for a few hours a day on the days I was unable to be there and on the days we have doctor appointments. I requested the same person if possible. The agency met our needs and my husband is adjusting well to having her help in his care. The office staff is understanding and easy to deal with; they have been helpful in many ways."

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Older adults living in Cuyahoga County can find various nonprofit agencies and government programs designed to help seniors age in place. Some of these services provide financial assistance for home upkeep, while others focus on keeping seniors connected to the local community.

---|---|---|
Home Weatherization Assistance Program | (800) 848-1300 | This program works to help seniors cut down on energy costs through home upgrades. Program representatives perform home inspections to determine services that can make them more energy-efficient, such as updating older windows and HVAC systems. Income restrictions apply, but adults over 60 are among the program's priority groups, and adults on SSI are automatically eligible. |
Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program | (866) 243-5678 | This program, funded both federally and locally, helps seniors access fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs from the area's farmers' markets. Coupons are distributed on a yearly basis to participating adults and may be used on any eligible foods sold at participating farmers' markets. |
Home Energy Assistance Program | (800) 282-0880 | The HEAP provides a one-time payment intended to help income-eligible Ohio residents with paying for their home heating bills. In most cases, the payment goes directly to the utility company. As with the HWAP, seniors receiving SSI are automatically considered eligible for the program. |
Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging | (800) 626-7277 | This agency is a central point for programs and services aimed at supporting seniors in northeast Ohio. Its PASSPORT program is specifically targeted at helping seniors live independently. It offers an array of services that include respite care, emergency response, personal care assistance and more. |

While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
