The second largest city in Indiana, Fort Wayne is notable for its riverfront area and offers everything from cultural outlets to outdoor activities. Fort Wayne’s entertainment options are one reason why many seniors live here: The city has 270,402 residents, of whom 14.0% are aged 65 and older. Seniors living here have easy access to healthcare providers, including the Lutheran Hospital network, which offers rehabilitation services, stroke and cardiac care and other services. Another option is Parkview Health, which offers various forms of care and a seniors’ club.

For support while living at home, Fort Wayne’s seniors have access to many providers of homemaker and home health aide services. Nationwide, in-home care costs an average of $4,481 per month, while home health care costs $4,576, according to the Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey. Fort Wayne’s average home health care rate matches the U.S. average of $4,576, but its median home care cost of $4,290 is a bit lower than the corresponding nationwide average.

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Fort Wayne:

AIS operates the local Aging and Disability Resource Center, which offers information and access to the State Health Insurance Program, which educates and assists Indiana’s Medicare beneficiaries. AIS also offers home-delivered meals for seniors 60 years of age and older. Additionally, AIS’s case management can help seniors avoid placement in a nursing home for as long as possible, and the organization offers assistance with advance care planning.

Additionally, applicants must be in good standing regarding mortgage payments, among other requirements.
