The Council on Aging of St. Lucie, Inc (COASL) is a partly government-funded nonprofit that works with volunteers and other staff to deliver numerous support services for seniors in the county. Their programs cover Meals on Wheels, homemaker services, respite care, adult day care and social services for seniors. The agency serves over 25,000 seniors per year with its large staff of more than 100 employees and 200 or more volunteers. Their services are available at low cost or no cost depending on specific eligibility conditions for individual senior applicants.

The AAAPBTC is the regional area agency on aging whose coverage extends over Fort Pierce. This organization’s services to seniors are extensive and include adult day health programs, in-home respite care support, victim support for elderly victims of criminal activity and assistance with shopping trips and errands. The organization also provides counseling and referral services for seniors seeking assistance with Medicare, Medicaid and other state or federal benefits programs. Other specific services to the elderly are also offered by this area agency on aging.

The Florida Weatherization Assistance Program is managed according to federal guidelines by the state Department of Economic Opportunity. However, the service is locally delivered to households by regional affiliates. In Fort Pierce and St. Lucie County, the agency responsible for weatherization is the Fort Pierce Utility Authority. Home weatherization is delivered free of charge to income-eligible applicants whether they rent or own their homes. Seniors receiving Supplementary Security Income payments are automatically eligible while other applicants must meet maximum income requirements.
