I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother is at Ruby Commons. I'm not entirely displeased with the place, but I'm not overly impressed with it either. The food there is nothing great. You get a choice, like at the start of a week, you can pick certain things on the menu. It's probably not like that every single lunch, but you get a choice of a hot dog, a hamburger, a chicken sandwich, or a bacon, lettuce, tomato sandwich. Those are your four choices for five different meals. It seems like maybe the following week, they might switch it to something else, and then it comes back to those same choices again. So, it seems the meals are nothing to brag about. Some of the care there, I wouldn't say that people there spend time with my mother, like helping her and working with her to any degree. She is supposed to get a certain amount of time that they spent with her. There is very little time that somebody will come in there to sit down with her, talk with her, and interact with her, or maybe help her with a puzzle, ask her questions, or get her thinking more. I'm a little disappointed that they haven't spent more time with her and interacting with her to some degree. There are different stages, like stage 3 or stage 4, and what you get charged upon is that stage that they basically fit her into. The higher the stage number, the more hours of care the individual is supposed to receive. Originally, she was like a stage 2 when she came in there, and then they said, "We've got to push her up to stage 3 right away," and I was like, "What's going on?" They said, "She peed on her bed, and if we're going to have to do her laundry all the time, it's going to take a lot more hours and stuff like that." I didn't have the ability to counter that with "Maybe we can figure out a way to get past this," which I did. She sleeps on a towel now that's doubled up. If she has an accident in the middle of the night, we take that towel off and put a new towel. I got four towels I took over there, but they're not washing her bedding all the time, even though they jammed her up into the next level of care. It's not terrible, terrible or anything like that, but I wouldn't say it's the greatest place to take your loved one and stick them in. I'm not overly impressed with the place that way. There was one lady who came into her room, who was pretty good. I talked to her a number of times. She seemed good, and she cared about my mom and expressed genuine concern. Then there were other people that weren't quite as concerned as I could detect in my experience of going there and in talking with them. The facilities outside of my mom's room are okay. They have a central area where they have entertainment from time to time. It seems like it's a nice area, but the outside areas, in my opinion, are lacking. They have a fountain out front, and they have a very small area where you can sit around this fountain, and that's basically it - for sitting outside. You go to the back, and really, there's nothing there where they could have another fountain and maybe a flower garden and something where people could go out and kind of sit and enjoy being in the fresh air. They didn't take the time to set up the backyard. It's a parking lot. For maybe $1,000 or something, they could dress that up a lot nicer than what it is now. It's a little disappointing. They don't put money into it to have a nicer setup for the people and give them a choice of going to the front yard or the back area. Sometimes it seems like they have entertainment come in. They have bingo on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There is like an exercise class that you could go to, but it's early in the morning. My mom wants to go to a Catholic mass on a Sunday or a Saturday, but it's not available. The only Catholic mass they have there is on a Monday, and so that's not really satisfying. Overall, it's horrible. They could offer more entertainment and do more to get the people engaged. They have a beauty area where you can get your hair done, and you pay for it, but that's something my mom is not going to do anymore.

I visited this facility

I visited. They were actually having some special thing going on that day. They were serving meals and had door prizes and things just to get people interested. I was impressed because as soon as we walked in, they were smiling, very open, and just friendly. It was well kept. The person who helped us was very friendly and very nice. I noticed that every resident that walked up to her was so talkative to her, and they were all having a good time. The food was good. We ate outside because it was a nice day and they had a lot of people.

I visited this facility

We liked it very much. The person during the tour did very well and we're very satisfied with it. It's homey and my wife likes it, which is very important. The dining area looked nice. They had an exercise area and a library, and I met the person in charge of crafts. We liked the individual rooms, and the location was good. The extra services appeared to be very good in terms of vans going to shopping and doctors' appointments.

I visited this facility

Everyone there was very nice. It's across the street from a shopping center and the post office is two blocks away. Everything was so convenient. The apartments were adequate. It was just expensive to live there. In talking to people that had lived there, there's always something to do, and if you have a little animal when you go in there, you can keep it.
