My friend is in Palmettos of Garden City. It's a beautiful community inside and out. The staff that works there is absolutely wonderful. My friend has only been there a month, and everyone already knows me by name. When I go in, I'm greeted by the front desk, the head of nursing, and the head of the community. I've never seen anything dirty in there. All the staff are very, very welcoming. When I'm there visiting him, three to four people come in and check to see if he needs anything and to see if he's OK. You can tell when you watch the staff, like in the dining area, they really care about these residents. They're very good to them. His apartment is a small one, but he has a dining area. He has his area where the bed is, and then he's got a seating area to watch TV and a very nice, big, handicapped bathroom. Once a week, they get on the bus, and they go shopping. They have different exercise routines that they can do, like chair exercises, if they want to sit in a chair and work their legs. They have physical therapy onsite. They take them to lunch at different restaurants. They took them to a couple of Christmas shows. They have a little coffee bar in there. Every single day of the month, there's something on the calendar that they can do. They had a jazz quartet come in for entertainment. They bring in pets. They can do something every single day. They have craft workshops for men and women. They can stay busy if they want to. They have several areas where the residents can go out and enjoy some sun and fresh air. The residents are like in an apartment building. They know each other. When they pass each other in the hall, they stop and talk. They have a family area where there's a big table, and they have a puzzle on the table. They have things in the hallway, like questions, and puzzles, and stuff. If you're walking by, you can fill in the blanks to answer the question, and then at the end of the week, they put the answer up. It's very stimulating for the residents there. They're so responsive to any need or anything that I might bring to their attention. They handle it immediately. I've taken him to the dining area. It is like being in a restaurant. It's expensive, but for the care that they receive and how well he's taken care, it's good because I've done it for three years myself, and it's a lot of hard work.

My father has been in this facility for 4 months. He brought it to the attention of leadership that a bed bug infestation broke out in his room. They failed to act after 2 weeks after telling us it wasn't bed bugs. Blood spots were all over his pillows, headboard, and mattress. We had a conference call with the director, and we could tell she didn't want this going beyond her. The first night, they put him on a blow-up bed in a spare room. He fell out of bed. All of his furniture, linens, and clothing had to be destroyed. 3 weeks later, they said his room was safe for him to move back in. My sister inspected the room and found bedbugs still crawling along the baseboards. The director said they were going to treat the room again. Although the director claims a professional exterminator is working on it, we have reason to believe they are attempting to treat it themselves to keep things under the radar. My sister was informed that my father's personal painting (he was an artist) that he created was thrown out, and this without discussing it with anyone first. The director has not offered any form of reimbursement or credit for my father's belongings. We received a full bill for the month.

The Palmettos of Garden City is wonderful. It's brand new, very clean, open, and airy. They have a lot of common areas to sit and socialize. Their staff is wonderful, I met their medical and nursing directors and activities director and they're all very caring and enthusiastic. It's conveniently located and the grounds are very nice, it's tucked away in a lot of trees. My father's room is a studio, it's a little smaller and pricier than some of the other places, but it's manageable. It has a large bathroom, with cable, Wi-Fi, and a telephone provided for free. All utilities are covered. In addition to three meals, they have unlimited snacks throughout the day. There's also a little bistro area where you can socialize and they have a happy hour every day.
