According to Genworth Financial’s 2020 Cost of Care Survey, this is an economical region for assisted living. On average, assisted living facilities in this region charge $3,600 per month. This is nearly $400 cheaper than the statewide monthly median of $3,988 and about $700 cheaper than the national average of $4,300.

The Cost of Assisted Living in Charleston County, SC and Nearby Cities

Charleston County is among the cheapest regions in South Carolina for assisted living, with care fees coming in nearly 10% below the state median at $3,600 per month. Only two cities have lower monthly care costs, including the Greenville area, where seniors pay $2,800, and Sumter, where fees average $2,200 per month. In Spartanburg, care costs are a little higher at $4,095, and in Florence, rates average $4,163. In South Carolina’s capital city of Columbia, care costs are consistent with the national average at $4,299. The Myrtle Beach area is considerably more expensive at $4,620 per month, and the Hilton Head Island area is the priciest region in the state at $5,475.

Mayor’s Office on Aging(843) 577-1306The Mayor’s Office on Aging advocates on behalf of seniors in Charleston County and provides residents with the resources and services they need. It partners with local agencies and service providers to give residents information and assistance in finding programs to meet their long-term care needs. It also educates older adults on age-related issues, such as health coverage, fraud and scams and federal benefit programs. 
Trident Area Agency on Aging(843) 554-2275The Trident Area Agency on Aging has Information and Referral Specialists who help seniors find services and programs to meet their needs and make educated decisions about their long-term care. Through its Eligibility Screening and Assessment Coordination Program, it screens older adults for services, such as senior center transportation, congregate dining and personal care. The agency operates GetCareSC, an information and referral program with a web-based search tool that helps seniors identify local providers. It also has senior health insurance counselors who provide free unbiased information on Medicare, Medicaid and long-term care insurance, which can help seniors find ways to cover assisted living expenses. 
Charleston County Veterans Affairs Office(843) 974-6360The Charleson County Veterans Affairs Office helps veterans and their spouses or survivors file applications to determine their eligibility for VA programs, benefits and healthcare services. Some benefits that the office helps visitors apply for include medical care, service-connected disability compensation, non-service-connected pension and government life insurance. 
Lowcountry Senior Center(843) 762-9555The Lowcountry Senior Center is open to adults aged 50 and over and provides a broad range of social and recreational programs. It hosts regular activities, such as art classes, quilters groups, a photography club, a knitting circle and a writing circle. Members can participate in exercise classes, including yoga, strength training and pickleball lessons. The center also has a fitness center with age-friendly exercise equipment, a computer lab and outdoor paved walking trails. 
South Carolina Legal Services(843) 720-7044South Carolina Legal Services provides free civil legal aid for county residents aged 60 and over. This nonprofit agency helps seniors obtain public benefits that may help them cover assisted living expenses, including Medicaid, Social Security benefits or Supplemental Security Income. It can help seniors appeal denied health insurance claims or canceled policies. It can also assist seniors with drafting wills and assigning powers of attorney.
