The Best Assisted Living Communities in Beaufort County, SC

"My mother is currently a resident of The Palmettos of Bluffton. The food is very good, they have activities although my mom hasn't joined in a lot yet. They play bingo for quarters, have happy hour every day and there's usually somebody singing or doing something. They have a bus that takes the residents on little trips, and they also have crafts. The staff seems to be very good. Like in other places, there's always an issue, but it gets resolved. The dining area is very good and they have a menu that you can choose from. You have to go to the dining room to eat unless you're sick. You can put what you want in the apartment, like your own furniture. I visited several senior communities, but this was the one we're comfortable with."

"We visited Summer Breeze Senior Living. My friend liked the location. The church that she belongs to is just a few blocks away from it. She likes the fact that it's down here on Wilmington Island, so that's her main thing. We've had several people that have stayed there, and they really liked it there. My friend said that seemed to be the place for her. The group that I belong to does Bible studies there once a week. We go to each one of the different rooms and visit with all the different residents there. We really liked it. We were very impressed with it. We had some of our members who stayed there, and my friend was acquainted with all of them. It's been real, real good for her. It's where she really wants to move to. It's a wonderful place, bright, and airy. All of the employees are very friendly and accommodating to their residents. They have all kind of social things they do that are just wonderful for the residents. They have groups come to sing with them outside when the weather permits. They put on little concerts for the people to come see. They play bingo. They have arts and crafts. They have a hairdresser, and you can get your hair done. They take you wherever you need to go. They take them to the mall and different places. The food is wonderful. I've had several meals over there with members of our church that had been staying there. All of our members liked it. It's just a well-rounded good place. You get a good feeling when you walk in there like your own. I never heard anybody complain about it other than price wise, but then everybody complains about prices. I can't fault that. My only problem is you have to bring your own furniture. They don't have furnished rooms unless you're in the hospital side of it or the full care side. They were very accommodating. Any time we went there, they would go help us gather people up and bring them down to the social room for our Bible studies and sing-alongs. It's just a very, very nice, pleasant place. The amenities far outweigh what little extra you pay. The community is great. You're close to a lot of the churches here. Most of these women like to attend their churches or church services. Just down here on the island itself, which is where Summer Breeze is, we've got about 8 or 10 different denominational churches. They'll go pick them up and take them to church, and then bring them back. It's a great place in a great neighborhood. We don't have to worry. They keep the doors locked at night, but there's always someone right out there in front at a desk to see who's coming in and who's going out. They make sure they sign them out and that kind of thing. It's a very safe place. I feel great about my friend being there, if she's able to get in there. The staff is all over the place taking care of their residents. If the residents in their rooms need something, they can call; one of the workers will be right there. You don't have to wait. They are very accommodating. I had lunch with one of the church members there one day, and it was very well seasoned and very good. They've got their main facility, which is where my friend would be (which is assisted living). There's also a memory care and an area where they have to have round-the-clock nurses. They've got cottages all around. If you're able, you can live in one of the cottages there. Those are people who can take care of themselves pretty much or just getting up in age. They're really good."

"My cousin lives in Harmony at Savannah. The apartments are very well-appointed and very spacious. There are elevators that are close by to accommodate those with mobility problems (my cousin has a mobility problem, she's on a walker). The place is very attractive. The staff that I had met were very nice and accommodating. One thing I don't like about the place is that their parking lot is not friendly to the residents. People with cars have to park way out at the far end, whereas donors who pay and help support Harmony at Savannah get to park way right up front and they're generally not people with mobility problems. So I think that's a fault. They have two handicapped spots and they're taken up by people that are visiting, not people that live there. Outside of that, the facility is well-run and has services available. It is excellent. The activities look like they're available on a regular basis and part of it requires that you make some friends and have people to do things within the facility. They also have movies, speakers, games, and lots of rooms dedicated to different board games and meetings. I've looked at other places and I think that it's a fair price she's paying there."

"Oaks at Pooler was nice but more expensive than other communities. The staff member was very nice and very informative. She talked to us about all the amenities and the services they offered. They had different types of rooms. I saw where residents put together crossword puzzles and their dining area. However, I think everybody was taking a nap at that time."

"We moved my sister into the Bayshore in early January and I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly everything went. They even recommended a small moving company, which carefully packed up all her belongings and moved her in without a hitch. The Bayshore is gorgeous with amazing amenities, including onsite physical therapy, andthe food, which my sister continues to rave about. The staff has been very pleasant and helpful and my sister has adapted to her new environment beautifully. I can’t imagine a nicer place! As you can imagine, the Covid virus is a big worry for us, but the general manager is very focused on keeping the residents and staff safe. To date, there have been no cases, and I believe that is based on how careful they are in making sure everyone wears their mask and stays a safe distance from others. Our family is very comfortable in knowing that our sister is being well cared for at the Bayshore."

"We went here and the staff was very knowledgeable and thorough, and they answered all our questions. It was very clean, they had a lot of activities, and we were very pleased with it. I was very happy with it, and so was my mom. They have a library, a beauty salon, a craft area maybe, and the dining room."

"The staff was very professional, took a lot of time to talk to me and took me on a tour. They had meeting rooms, activity rooms, music, piano, get-togethers, live entertainment, game room, and a place for happy hour. The memory care facilities got their own wing there. It was clean, but a little bit of an older facility."

"The rehab part of Sprenger Health Care Port Royal has been great. I'd recommend it. It's new, modern, and the people are caring. The administrative staff are helpful and I've been real pleased with them for weeks when my mom's been there. She's gotten good care. The room is nice and the place is really well-maintained. The food is pretty good and she likes it. The cost is probably on the higher end of the scale, but for the support they provided, I was comfortable with that. I thought it was worth the money. They all worked really hard, kept us (her family) updated on what they were doing and why they were doing it, and how we could help."

"Our experience with River Oaks Assisted Living was very positive. The person that talked with me and showed me around was very thorough and very professional. The rooms were a little small. The dining area was very nice. They seemed to have a good variety of activities."

"We moved dad into the memory unit of Sprenger Health Care Bluffton. The facility is new, I think about a year old, so it's relatively clean and well-appointed. There are three different levels of care, assisted living, nursing, and then memory care. Once my father was put in the nursing facility, it took about three or four weeks and we realized that was not the right unit for him. He was falling and I think the level of care was not what he needed. I was determined that he should be in the memory care unit, and he's getting good care there now. We're very happy. I feel like the nurses care about his well-being. I think especially right now with the pandemic, there's certainly a shortage of caregivers in facilities like this one. You can tell the people who care and the people who don't care as much when they're stressed with extra workloads and so forth. There's also a physical therapy unit with physical therapists and so forth. And I'm very happy with the care that my father received from those people. There's a doctor on staff and all in all, I think that he's receiving good care. I believe most of the rooms are approximately the same size. They all have a bed, their bathroom, with television, phone, and nice cabinets to store not only your clothes but other personal belongings. My father's room was nicely done. It had a nice paint job. The units are all approximately the same size, but they're appointed slightly differently, depending on whether you need assisted living, or nursing, or memory care. I know that there's another gentleman who's there for assisted living, and he has more of what you would kind of consider a residential look as opposed to my father who's in the memory care who has more of a kind of a clinical, even though there are the feng shui colors, and it's very warm and inviting. It's a little more of a hospital look. Some entertainers come on a scheduled basis. Some play musical instruments, and there's a schedule of events that comes out every day for residents there. I can't say that we've taken advantage of it. I think my dad is in a more advanced stage of the care that he needs, so he would not benefit from entertainment, but there is entertainment there. There's even a bar in the main reception area where you do feel like you are kind of socially active there. Snacks are served and even some drinks if you qualify to have a drink. Overall, it's a happy place, as happy as a nursing facility can be. In addition to the physical therapy type of care that keeps people active, some entertainment comes into the facility."

"After looking at about six facilities I decided on the Retreat at Lady’s Island. This proved to be one the best decisions I have ever made. The Retreat is maintained impeccably, the food is exceptional and most of all the staff is amazing. My wife is treated like family. Honestly, this place exceeded my wildest expectations. Don’t think I’ve ever been associated with or have known an organization with so many pleasant and competent people who genuinely love their work. God’s work."

"My husband is in Buckingham South Assisted Living. I am satisfied with their services. He has Alzheimer’s, and they have him taken care of. He has been there since December. They have been good, but they are expensive. The community is nice. They have activities and their amenities are nice, too. They have a good dining room, and they have pretty caring staff. It has porches that people can sit on. "

"The place is spotless! The staff are friendly and caring. They are responsive to a residents needs. They plan special meals for Holidays. They invite speakers to talk about Medicare, Medicaid, insurance and other subjects. The grounds are beautiful. I don't live there but would be happy to live there if the need arises. "
