Horry County Council on Aging

The Horry County Council on Aging offers programs for older adults throughout the region around Myrtle Beach. Its services include supportive care via group meal service, home delivery of meals, social activities, transportation assistance and free health screenings. Residents of Horry County, in which Myrtle Beach is located, who are 60 or over are eligible for assistance.

South Carolina Department of Aging (SCDOA)

The SCDOA is a state-level agency that offers senior care services, advice and state benefits liaison to senior residents for all of South Carolina. The Department works with assorted regional and local organizations at managing programs and support for helping elderly individuals stay active in their lives and communities. The SCDOA is involved in several major programs for elderly individuals. These include the Alzheimer’s Resource Coordination Center, the ElderCare Trust Fund program and the State Health Insurance Assistance Program.

The WRCOG operates as the dedicated Area Agency on Aging for the Waccamaw Region, which consists of Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg Counties. This means serving as the Aging and Disability Resource Center for the region and coordinating with seniors, adult caregivers and senior care facilities on services for elderly individuals. The WRCOG works through its three county aging agencies to offer small grants for family caregivers, health insurance counseling and information or support on state services for elderly adults.

The General Robert H. Reed Recreation Center serves as a public meeting space for Myrtle Beach residents of all kinds and offers several recreational opportunities that are especially focused on keeping senior residents active. The Center hosts a constant flow of meetings, games, recreational courses and other communal activities. Its Dance and Gametime programs both include classes and social events for activities such as ballroom dancing, beginner’s dancing and chess tournaments. The Center’s Senior Dances have become year-round evening events.
