"I had an in-person tour of the Abby Gardens, and it was a good tour. For long-term care, it seemed pretty good. I just felt it was for someone who needed much more care than my mom needed. It's very sterile. They have two beds in the room. The facility was very clean. They had lots of activities scheduled. It's a great location. All the people there were very nice. I would suggest it for long-term care for somebody with dementia and those kinds of issues. The staff was very knowledgeable, answered all my questions, and was very helpful."

"My Mother has now been at Kearny Mesa for seven months. The loving care she has received is incredible. She has asked them to do many extras-bring her warm milk at night, rub her feet, rearrange her pillows- and the staff does so with grace. The nurses have been responses to changes in her health and have been good about notifying us. It is wonderful to have a facility we can trust. They are well staffed with nurses but slightly understaffed with CNA's-but they make up for it with the heart they put in the job."

"My mother is in LifeHOUSE San Diego Healthcare Center. It seems like it's an acceptable, OK place. It’s a big place with 300 beds. When you first come in, it's very impressive, and they clean the rooms every day. Some days it smells OK and some days it smells like urine, but it really depends on which part of the facility you are in. It's a pretty clean place overall. The staff is knowledgeable, and if you have a complaint or concern, they're pretty receptive, which is good. "

"Hillcrest Residential Care is awesome. They have two caregivers per six people. They also have a registered nurse that helps with the administration of the medication. It's very nice and very clean. My mother is bedridden, so they get her up and out of bed every day into the front room where there is social time. They prepare their food, wash them, clean them, feed them, medicate them, get them up and out, and help them get dressed. It's a residential home. The cooking is all done there, but they kind of overcook the meat. It's Filipino style, which is absolutely phenomenal, but my mother is picky."

"I put my husband at Mission Hills. The nurses there are very good at taking care of patients. Excellent! The nurses are fantastic. They are all working everyday with patients. They knew what's going on with patients, and that's fantastic. I love Mission Hills. However, I'm not happy with the food. "

"My mother is in Balboa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. The care has been excellent. They need more staff, but they're doing what they can do. The place has been amazing, and she has been on and off in there, and they're wonderful. I'm pleasantly surprised with the food. Her room is very clean. They have activities, but she's not interested in them. I have no problems with this place. They provide physical and occupational therapy. I've only been in the therapy room a couple of times, but it seems very equipped and clean. The therapists are very polite and they keep me very much informed. She always has fresh linen. She has a TV in her room and a telephone. Food's brought in to her if needed. I've been very pleased. They're like family. They've been amazing."

"Arroyo Vista is a large and modern nursing facility which offers great service at a stunning price. My grand mother was in this nursing home for a few months after a surgery and her experience was flawless. My grandmother was bed ridden for about a week, but her personal staff of two nurses helped her with her every need. The room she was in had a large television with a large dresser, she had her own bathroom and balcony to enjoy the great San Diego weather. The dining hall was nice and served hearty and warming meals that everyone in the facility seemed to enjoy. My grandmother loved the library and the personal gym which helped her with her physical therapy after the surgery. Overall it is a quality facility and is great for elderly care. I liked it so much i felt like ordering a room myself the service, and the food was so good. In addition the front desk admins are very helpful and even called both me and my mom on days that we could not make it to see my grandmother which made it feel very personal and like she had been left in the right hands. Great place for care and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for this type of care. "

"I was very impressed with University Care Center in San Diego. They had a very nice facility with professional Cali-style landscaping, and a very clean interior with a welcoming atmosphere that was nothing like a "typical nursing home." They were located right next to a hospital, and were within walking distance of a very large park where the elderly could go sit with their visitors. My client had everything nice to say about this facility, from the food to the staff to his treatment - which is the most important part. I would highly recommend this facility to anyone in the San Diego area. "

"Everybody in St. Paul's Health Care Center was professional, very kind, and considerate. I hope everyone would have the same experience because it's a difficult time to go through, and they made it quite bearable. My mother was there was for a few days before she passed away, but she had excellent care and I was able to be in the room with her, and our family was able to be with her in the end. It couldn't have been any better. "

"My sister was here after she suffered a mild brain injury. She came to this facility on a ventilator and with several other issues. Within a month of her stay the team was able to remove the ventilator and get her back on her feet. I attribute her success to the long term caring staff that looked after her and helped her reach her maximum potential. "

"My father was at Country Manor La Mesa. The setting was nice. The staff was about average. He had occupational therapy and physical therapy there. He was also in a respiratory program. It had a nice outdoor area, and the residents could go inside or outside. All of that was fine. They had manicures, pedicures, or haircuts. They had people that come in once a month, and you could sign up on a list to make sure that you get your haircut or whatever when they come in. They had a really good social coordinator. They did lots of things. Every day there'd be one or two different events that would happen there. If you wanted to participate, you could; if not, you didn't have to. He stayed there for three months one time, and then one month another time."

"I was in rehab for four months at The Springs at Pacific Regent La Jolla. I came there right after surgery. Generally speaking, I was in bed most of the time. There was a doctor who was a director there, and he was very good. I developed an infection while I was there, and he was able to put me in remission for that. On that basis, it was very good. Some caregivers were very qualified, and some were not. "

"Of all the places we visited in the La Mesa & El Cajon area, Parkway Hills was the best. It is a smaller facility (around 50 beds I think) and felt more like home than the others which were more like hospitals. Susan the Admissions Director was very nice and answered all our questions. Many of the senior staff (Admissions Director, Director of Nursing, etc.) have been there for 10-20 years which I think is a positive sign. They have their own on-site physical rehab program which was also a plus as we knew my mother-in-law needed to rebuild her strength. Most importantly, their most recent California audit survey revealed only one minor issue relating to food storage... The other facilities all had pages and pages of issues, many with complaints from patients of abuse or incorrect drug dosage which is scary!!She's now been there for about 3 weeks and his hoping to be discharged next week. Her experience was very good. Her PT coach, Mike, pushed her very hard but the exercise was rewarding and has built her strength and confidence. The nursing staff is nice and helpful. All of her needs are met there. The only downside is that like many places, the staff get busy and sometimes forget the little things. My mother-in-law has waited hours for a promised cup of coffee or to have her nebulizer cleaned. In the grand scheme of things, these are really minor issues and I suspect we'd experience this at other places too. This was the only factor in giving them 4 instead of 5 stars.Overall we're very happy with Parkway Hills! "

"I was a recent guest at Arbor Hills and I feel grateful to the staff and the occupational therapy crew, Palo, Jun, Cynthia, and Veronica, who's encouragement and patience helped me immensely. The food was appetizing. They accommodated my vegetarian diet without any problems. The night staff nurses were kind and thoughtful. I have no complaints and nothing but praise for this facility. "

Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
