The Best Independent Living Communities in Cuyahoga County, OH

"Myers Apartments is on Cedar Road. They're an independent living facility, and they share the swimming pool and the grounds with another facility. If my brother started at Myers Apartments in independent living, but he got ill, he could then be transferred over to that facility. We all saw the apartment that my brother would have. It was very, very nice, and he had a nice patio. The only reason he is not going to go there is that it's $1,500. It's out of his budget, although they take Section 8 now. They were willing to assist with the paperwork. In the meantime, he would have to pay the $1,500 until they approved the Section 8. They have excellent staff. It was a wonderful facility. We got to take the lunch, and it was a very good diet that they have going. The food is prepared right there, and it was excellent. It is not inclusive, so it is charged to your room, and you pay for that in your rent monthly. It's like an apartment. It has the kitchen, the one bedroom, a living area, and a little, but very nice patio. It has eight libraries. They provide the laundry service, or he could do it himself. There was no additional charge for the laundry. His room is right around the corner from the laundry service. They have a little store in the facility. They have their own little greenhouse. I loved the greenhouse. They have a nice outdoor patio for everyone because they provide weekly get-togethers."

"Right now my dad is at Solon Pointe because that is where they can accept Medicaid waiver for him because he is not able to self-pay. He is up on the second floor in the memory care and they want to see if they can try to transition him to the downstairs area and eventually get him over to his own studio in the assisted living. He has been there since April 3rd and he is not happy because he says the place is too clinical. The facility needs a little updating, but I am sure the Alzheimer’s patients don’t really care. The nursing staff is very good and treating him well. The two nurses who we talked to said that they wouldn’t mind having him back. If a family member couldn’t ride with him to appointments, that they will transport him there with someone and bring him back. Their assisted living side looks good and they’ve have a lot of activities going on. Their dining room and little library area look nice, and their assisted living side looks really nice."

"The place was fantastic. Physically, it's nice, lots of green, lots of space. The rooms were very nice also. They had activities. I saw a lady painting, and some were playing bingo. They can take you to the near premise if you have an appointment and you cannot drive. I like this one because they give you options. I like to cook, and if you don't want their meals, you can cook in your apartment. The dining room was like a restaurant. The only thing that I really don't like was they don't have a tub, but the rooms were comfortable and large. They have a dining room, bathroom, and a full kitchen. But they do not accept pets. They have a whole page full of activities like movies and painting, and they have a conference room and a piano. The Normandy is a good place to be. They have a nurse in the facility, and should you need something, she'd be available to you. "

"The staff at Richmond Heights Place was lovely. They greeted me in the lobby and asked me who I wanted to see, and then asked me to have a seat. The atmosphere of the place was so beautiful, just sitting in the lobby and looking out the window. One side of it was closed in like a patio. When I started the tour, I saw the entire facility and it was beautiful. The only thing about it was I would have to supply my furniture. I saw the residents doing crafts and some were playing bingo. And when it was time to eat, the dining room doors opened and everybody was in line. The dining room was beautiful. It was immaculate. If I had the funds, that's where I would want to go."

"I visited The Ashton of Mayfield Heights. It seems like a very good place. They were very knowledgeable and very helpful. They offered us brunch, and it was very good. Everything was fine. The rooms and the common areas were very nice."

"I am living in The Winfield at Richmond Heights. They always have turnover. The help is good, they have a great maintenance man here, and they have a super dining room supervisor, she's wonderful. But some of the people are kinda meh, they're not bad, but they're not good either. They could use some social skills. And I'm not moving out of here because of that, I'm moving out of here for financial reasons. We have a balcony that I like to go out and smoke my cigar on, and we watch TV, and we have some activities that we participate in. There's a library, their exercise room is strictly by appointment only for physical therapy, and they could keep the elevators clean. As far as our apartment goes, we kind of customized it and had it painted. It cost me some money, but we had the kitchen, the living room, and the 1-bedroom area painted, the handicapped showers are wonderful, and there's lots of closet space. We have housekeeping once a week. The food isn't out of this world, but it's ok. We cook and eat a lot of sandwiches up here, I don't need all three meals every day. They have an activity director here named Sue, who is wonderful."

"Vitalia Senior Residences of Solon is a brand new place. It had plenty of activities for the seniors to partake in. They had a swimming pool, chair yoga, chair volleyball, and other things. They also had fitness classes, games, a library, and a movie room with discussions going on. It seemed like a very nice place. The apartments were pretty nice. They had studio apartments as well as one and two-bedroom apartments. You have to bring your furniture. The lady that was giving the tour was very knowledgeable and very friendly. She engaged in conversation with my wife's cousin and got to know all about her and everything. There were a couple of residents who came up and said hi, too. We saw the menu and it seemed like there was good food in the cafeteria."

"My husband and I have moved into Hilltop Village. I like the fact that I can go down and get a coffee every day. I can get my own mail in the facility where I live. I don't have to go out and look for a mailbox. I like that they have different activities on different days that you can participate in. Sometimes they go to the grocery store, sometimes to the bank. Lots of different things, which is good for senior citizens. In this facility, they have lots of laundry rooms that you can go and wash. You don't have to be piled up in one laundry room. I love that everything is on one floor, that I don't have to worry about elevators and all of that. I love the fact that the managers and executives and the folks here are very friendly. That's good to meet friendly people my age. As you get older, you want more peace of mind. So that's engaging for me, and it is a very friendly place here. I love the fact of sitting up in my living room, and I have my own private little porch on the outside. In the summertime, I can just sit over there, and it's all screened in, and you got a light in. I just love the fact that it's all privacy. In the front area of the facility, I would love to see them get some new carpet. Because I have a walker and people ride in those go carts and they carry a lot of mud. In terms of value for money, from what I can understand as far as the rent and everything, it's cheaper than where I was, and I have two bedrooms and two baths."

"Vitalia Highland Heights is a brand-new facility. They just opened. I was very impressed with the independent living quarters that they offered. There were two spaces available. There are two bedrooms with a nice large living area and a kitchen that has everything. I know that if I wanted to, I could cook and bake there. There's a seating area in the kitchen. You don't have to have a dining room table, but it's big enough that you could have people sit down there on both sides. You could probably get maybe 4 or 5 people sitting in this area. They have beautiful two bathrooms that are bigger than what I'm living in right now. They have a washer and dryer, which is very important to me. The price is OK. I think they want $4005 or somewhere around there, maybe close to $5000 a month. They offer a lot of bus trips and typical things. They have a pool. They have everything. They have invited me twice now to come for lunch and their food is excellent. If you have a car, they have a covered parking area and that's $75 a month. That's high, and all it does is that there's a parking area where everybody parked right next to each other. You just have a roof over the outdoors. It's not an enclosed garage."

"I toured Vitalia Senior Residences at Westlake for my mom. I would say it was good. I was doing the tour on a Saturday, and it doesn't appear that the regular staff does Saturday tours. My expectation would have been to be given some type of information about the different costs of the different units they have, and the price break down. They weren't able to provide that. I was only given a name of someone to call to get that information. In my mind the person didn't have the necessary information, or was unaware where to get it. It then causes me to have to do more follow up, work with them, and chase them down to get information that I should have been provided on the tour. The only person I interacted with was the person that took me on a tour. She was polite and nice. The condition of the place was nice. This one didn't quite have as many nice areas for the people, as opposed to the other community I saw. They were nicely decorated but not quite as upscale."

"Summit Point is beautiful. It was excellent. The person who helped me during the visit was Sherry, I think, and she was very helpful. We had lunch there and the food was very good. The dining area looked very comfy and real homey; it was very nice. The activities are very good, they have bingo, pool, movies or matinee movies, and then they have popcorn and everything. It was very nice and the place itself is beautiful."

"I'm a resident here, and it's very good. It has 72 residents, so it's not huge, and everyone knows everybody. They have bingo, movies, bowling, pool, and go to the casino, shopping, and restaurants. They have prayer service, Scrabble, board games, coffee hour, and monthly meetings with the residents to try to improve their activities. They have medical staff, who are pretty good and do their best to take care of our needs."

"I liked Fairmont of Westlake. I was impressed. Our experience was very good. They were very helpful. They explained a lot of information. The facility was very nice. The staff was very nice and very attentive. She's called me since, but I have not called her back because I didn't know what to say. We had some other things to talk about, so she gave me phone numbers to other people to talk about my father's care and how to get that, and that was very helpful. She didn't ask for commitment or anything. She did help me with a lot of other information. They took me all over. It was very clean. The different people from the different areas seemed to get along together. It seemed like they help each other and talk with each other. I was impressed with it. If he had been willing to go there, especially since he is a lower-end budget, I thought it was really good for that amount because most of these places are so much more money. For the money, it would be good. Everyone I met was very friendly and would give you information. I thought the facility was impressive. They have a lot of different areas. There are a lot of different people around. I would have used the facility if he were ready for it and he would do it. I thought it would be a nice facility to be in."
