I was concerned at first to find the dark, drab and outdated Johnston R. Bowman Center when my boyfriend was transferred there from the brand new Rush Hospital Tower. I was pleased to find the friendly and cheerful staff that we encountered during his week long stay after his Cervical fusion surgery. The nurses were prompt and courteous in all requests and several seemed to take a special interest in and go out of their way to provide my boyfriend with things he could eat as he was on a puree food diet and most things were as terrible tasting as they looked in mashed up form. There was a male nurse in particular who seemed to go out of his way to make sure my boyfriend was comfortable and also kept busy during his stay and I appreciated the kindness and extra attention to his care he was given by all as it was difficult for my boyfriend being a young spinal cord injured man in a facility with people all much older than himself. One nurse on a Sunday while myself and my boyfriend's children were there visiting went out of her way to find a suitable area for all of us in our group of 6 people to sit and be able to play games with the children and have a more comfortable visit than to just be trapped in his shared room. So all though the building seems old and dreary, the staff I encountered while there were all enough to keep the place bright and cheery and the care was very much appreciated.
