Located in the extreme western part of West Virginia along the Ohio River, Huntington is a vibrant city with about 45,000 residents, including nearly 6,950 seniors aged 65 and older. Huntington is the seat of Cabell County and it’s isolated by distance and geography from larger cities. However, retirees can enjoy a small-town ambiance, and the city still offers plenty of dining, shopping, recreational, cultural and entertainment opportunities. Huntington’s low cost of living, low taxes, high-quality healthcare services and numerous senior resources make it a great place for retirement.
Assisted living provides a residential environment for seniors who need some personalized assistance but wish to remain as independent as possible. However, it’s not suitable for those who require 24/7 skilled nursing care. The average cost of assisted living in Huntington is $3,775, which is lower than the state average and even lower than the national median.
This guide includes details about assisted living in Huntington, including how its average cost stacks up against other West Virginia cities and other types of senior care. It also provides a list of free senior resources and the benefits and drawbacks of retiring in Huntington.

My mother-in-law lives in Kings Daughters & Sons Home. It’s very clean. It’s an older facility, and even though it’s not modern and updated a lot, they do around-the-clock care. So for what her financial status is, they take very good care of her. Right now through COVID, they haven’t had as many activities that they’ve had before as far as having an activity director and stuff going on. She’s able to go outside and they have the porch. I like that they do all their laundry, they bring her and give her her medicine. So we feel good about that. My mother-in-law loves the food, she says it’s very good. She gets three meals a day and she says the food is wonderful. Right now, the problem we’re having is that they’re understaffed with what’s going on across the country. I don’t think they offer a whole lot right now.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Huntington
The state agency responsible for licensing and monitoring assisted living facilities in Huntington and throughout West Virginia is the Office of Health Facilities Licensure and Certification. The OHFLAC conducts at least one inspection before an assisted living community is issued a license and conducts periodic unannounced inspections after licensure to ensure compliance with applicable statutes and rules.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Huntington
- Huntington boasts several local hospitals, including Cabell Huntington Hospital, which was rated as high-performing in five procedures/conditions, and St. Mary’s Medical Center-Huntington, which was rated as high-performing in nine procedures/conditions. Additionally, St. Mary’s was regionally ranked as the third-best hospital in West Virginia. Huntington also has a Veterans Affairs medical center and several other medical facilities.
- Retirees receiving Social Security income over a certain amount currently face high state income taxes, but West Virginia is phasing these taxes out. By 2022, qualifying retirees in Huntington and throughout the state will enjoy tax-free Social Security benefits. Railroad retirement benefits and military pensions are already exempt from state taxes.
- West Virginia has a moderate sales tax rate. Despite a somewhat high 6% state levy, municipalities can only add up to 1% to this rate. The resulting total combined rate can’t exceed 7%, which is the tax rate in Huntington. However, groceries and prescription drugs are tax-exempt, which helps curb costs on two common expenses among aging adults.
- The overall cost of living in Huntington is an exceptional 26% lower than the national average. Huntington beats the U.S. average in all categories, especially utilities and transportation. However, housing offers the greatest savings, with average costs nearly 66% lower than the U.S. norm, which may positively impact assisted living rates.
- Huntington residents enjoy all four seasons, which are nearly equal in length, but autumn is the most pleasant. Overall, the climate is more comfortable than most places in West Virginia. The city receives an average of 44 inches of rain per year, which is higher than the U.S. average of 38, and about 14 inches of snow, which is lower than the national average by half. July is the warmest month with an average high of almost 87 degrees, while January is the coolest with an average low of 24 degrees.

The Cost of Assisted Living in Nearby Cities
Huntington’s average cost of assisted living not only beats the state and national averages, but it’s also lower than many other cities around the state. Compared to Wheeling ($3,906), Huntington’s cost is lower by $131 per month and it’s cheaper than Charleston ($4,000) by $225. The gap is even wider elsewhere. The average cost in Parkersburg ($4,769) is $994 higher, while in Beckley it’s $1,725 more at $5,500 per month.
The Cost of Other Types of Senior Care
When comparing other types of senior care in Huntington, nursing home facilities are the most expensive option. These cost an average of $6,844 per month for a semiprivate room and $7,148 for a private room, which may be necessary for those requiring round-the-clock care. Seniors aging in place at home may consider homemaker services or home health aides, which both have an average cost of $3,790 per month. This is almost on par with the $3,775 average cost of assisted living. For those needing minimal assistance, adult day health care is typically the least costly option. While cost data isn’t available for Huntington for this type of care, the statewide average is just $2,243 per month.
