"Hawksbill Assisted Living is a great place because it's all on one floor and the rooms are decent. My dad liked it and the people that run it are very nice. The food menu was good. They have a lot of activities, and the people that reside there are very friendly, too. The community is in a very nice location. It's right next to a stream that's beautiful, and a park. You can look outside and you can see the mountains. It was very clean. We toured with the recreation director, and she was very, very informative. Then the person that runs it, the director of the facility, was also very nice and very informative."

"I toured Anthology of Charlottesville. The apartment's pretty small. They serve two meals a day. They have lounges. It's a sort of typical higher-end retirement place. They have a courtyard and common spaces. They have a cafe-type and a bar-type area, which I think you can use if you want to have a get-together. They have an activity room. They had a saltwater heated pool and a movie theater room. They have a fair number of amenities."

"My mother is staying at RoseWood Village at Greenbrier. The staff is outstanding. I think it's beautifully decorated, so it's always visually attractive. I've watched them play cornhole. They've had spelling bees and they play bingo. They have a variety of musicians who come in. They have exercise groups every morning. They have a variety of movies, trivia games, and crafts. They have a lot of activities. They have a good schedule. They have a variety of rooms. You can get bigger rooms, a two-bedroom, a one-bedroom, or a studio. They have little kitchen galleys. But most of them are going to be just microwave and coffeemaker level. They do have refrigerators, but not with stoves."

"My wife and I moved to the Colonnades ten months ago, after considering five other Charlottesville-area retirement facilities. The residents and staff quickly made us feel part of the community. The staff is very helpful and available, even with some tech support with the internet and cell phones. We especially appreciate the wide range of activities--there seems to be an activity for every interest--and the varied exercise and fitness opportunities. There is a UVA-staffed health center and a good physical/occupational therapy program. The food is generally good, and it's improving. Independent living residential options include cottages with garages and patios and apartments with patios or balconies. Pets are welcome."

"We had a nice tour at Commonwealth Senior Living at Charlottesville. It seemed to be well managed and well maintained. They had two-bedroom units available, which is what we prefer. The apartments were well-maintained and adequate in size, but the kitchen was very small. The staff was very knowledgeable, very open to questions, and gave us a lot of opportunities to talk and ask various things. They had people cleaning the rugs. We were supposed to go look at a couple more rooms, but they were upgrading them. So, I was impressed that they were doing that."

"My husband has lived at Acadia for almost a year. He has Alzheimer’s. .Previously, I placed him at two other facilities. Neither one could meet his increasing needs and the costs were becoming prohibitive. A social worker from the University of Virginia worked with me to locate an appropriate placement for him. Immediately, we focused in on Acadia. It’s the best decision I could’ve made. The staff are down to earth, friendly, and caring. On top of this, my husband’s dog is allowed to be with him. Acadia feels like a home, and not an institutional placement. Staff and residents are one big family. I am there often to see my husband, but also to spend time with residents and the staff, with whom I have become very close. Kudos to Brad, whose vision to help others with disabilities to live a dignified life, has come to fruition."

"Regency at Augusta was very beautiful. The staff gave us an excellent tour of the facility. We met a lot of them and they were all very pleasant. Everything that we saw looked OK. They had a library, a community room, and they also had a hairdresser. They had a lot of activities like puzzles, card games, and Bible studies."

"We toured the assisted living of Brookdale Staunton for my mother-in-law. It is a nice facility, and the people there care about their residents. The person who welcomed us was very nice. She did a very good job for us. She was very informed and was generally concerned about the well-being of my mother-in-law. I saw some residents playing bingo, but there were other activities and plenty of things for them to do. They offer transportation, they have a beauty salon, and a craft area for the residents. There is an area where they can congregate and watch movies. There is a chapel area, a little library, and places outside that the residents can go to. They offer three meals a day, plan trips at different times, and even hold events. I think they celebrated St. Patrick's Day the other day. They have people there who try to get the residents involved in doing different things, which is good."

"My sister is happy here. At first, we didn't have nowhere to put her, and they took her. She's happy there. They really take good care of her with her condition. She's dying of cancer, and they keep a close eye on her. She's a heavy smoker and that's the only one we found where she's allowed to smoke, and we didn't want to take that away from her with her dying. As long as she can get up and go to smoke. They're just all around good people. At certain nights of the week there's no med tech there, so if you're in severe pain and it's after 11:00, you have to deal with it. It's very clean. They get three proper meals a day and it's good quality food. You got to watch cholesterol and sugar and all that stuff, but they have healthy meals, too. They're allowed to go out and walk and do activities. They are allowed to go to the Elkton Community Center, and they do activities down there."

"my mother lives there and she loves it. I am very pleased with how they take care of her they keep her room very clean and they give her regular showers as well the food is good as well. I have also noticed that her usage of depends has dropped dramatically,that tells me they are spending time with her using the toilet and the place doesn't smell bad like the hole she was in. great job staff thank you for taking care of mom."

"My sister-in-law is now at Sunnyside Retirement Community. Primarily, it has just been a wonderful experience. All the levels of staff (the doctors, the nurses, the health aides, and the physical therapists) are very caring, very professional, and always very kind. My sister-in-law is in a single room with her own bathroom in there. She has a lovely window where she can look out and see trees, shrubs, and things like that. She has a nice bed, a reclining chair, and straight-back chairs, so there's room for people to come in and sit down and visit with her. There's plenty of room for her to move around in. It's very comfortable. They have a dining room area. If patients aren't feeling up to it, they bring it to the room. The dining room area is very friendly. She thinks the food is very good. They have a wonderful team and nutritionists on board. They have a wide variety of food. It's very tasty for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She is overall very pleased with the food. I'm very pleased with them. Every staff person that we either talk to or interact with has been very caring, very professional, and has reached out regularly. They have taken care of any needs that my sister-in-law certainly needs and are trying to be on top of everything for her best care. It's extremely clean and well-maintained. I find it comparable to any other place that I've been to, and it's expensive, but you get quality care, quality facilities, and quality medical care. "

"We chose English Meadows Harrisonburg Campus because it is all one level, and it is only three years old. It is definitely the newest of the places we toured. They have all-inclusive pricing, so all care levels are included. Christy, who I dealt with initially, was the admissions person, and she was great. She was helpful. She toured us around a couple of different times. The nurses who have been helping my grandmother have been great. My grandmother has been overall happy with the food, too. Everything looks brand new. They have nice common areas and a very nice dining room. They have activities almost every day. My grandmother will be doing arts and crafts today, and then they are going on a nature walk this afternoon. Those activities have really been beneficial for her, and she is able to walk around. She is getting a lot more exercise than she was when she was home. She loves their activities. All of the facilities are a high cost per month, but that is the nature of that type of assisted living, but for what you get at English Meadows versus some of the other places we toured, I think it's a great value for the money."

"I was a patient at Oak Lea (2024) and also at a later date this year, my husband required care at Oak Lea. I had back surgery requiring assistance, and my husband had a four-wheeler accident with a broken leg and other injuries that needed to be looked after. He then developed a serious infection that required IVs ever eight hours over the course of six weeks. He feels just as I do that VMRC is the very best (greatest) of all places to be. Private rooms, excellent nursing care, therapy is caring and what can I say except that we had no complaints whatsoever with any area of this facility. Daniel and Heath take care of your Medicare issues along with any problems that may concern you. We feel very blessed to have VMRC in our area."

"My husband and I will be moving to The Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. We choose it because we have a daughter, a son-in-law and grandchildren in that area. I am also from that area so it feels like I am going back home. I like their set up because they go from individual cottages, to apartments, to assisted living and then nursing home. In other words, it is progressive. It goes to hospital stage. The staff is very nice. We are moving to a two-bedroom, two bath facility. There is a kitchen in the apartment, but I will not be cooking that much. It will be small but it will be sufficient. They have three dining rooms in different areas where we can eat. They have everything undercover so you don't have to walk out in the winter. They have a bank, a gift shop, a library and beauty parlor inside the buildings. The buildings are connected with covered walkways. "
