Assisted Living Communities in Elkton, VA

"RoseWood Village at Greenbrier was well-maintained, and the person that gave us the tour was fine. We walked through the dining area and we saw the posted menus. I noticed that the menu did not offer an option that my husband could have because he has an allergy to mammal meat. But they said they could make something special for him, and that they had another person who's had that. It was a nice-looking facility. They were doing some upgrading to the public areas of it. We were just disappointed that they didn't offer independent living, which is what we were looking for."

"Commonwealth Senior Living at Charlottesville was a very attractive, welcoming, well-organized place at first glance. Once I was taken on a tour of the facilities and especially the independent living floor, I was even more impressed. I liked everything that I saw. I liked how it was maintained and decorated and how residents were wandering around as people would do, coming and going as they pleased and the staff was available, but not bothersome in any way. I was very impressed with the size of the one-bedroom apartment that I saw and the layout of it. It had everything I could think that my mother-in-law would need or want. I was even more impressed with two things. One was the number of public spaces for the residents, a library, a theater room, a pub, a large dining area, small nooks and crannies everywhere with a couple of chairs and a table or something for people to sit and read or talk or whatever, a really big covered porch outside, one in the front, too, but this was on the side of the building, so it's kind of private. The person who was showing me around was so enthusiastic about the place. It was kind of contagious. I just agreed with her opinion on everything she was showing me, so it was easy for her to convince me that it was well worth checking out. I wasn't interested in the food because I wasn't going to be eating it particularly. I was happy to know that there were menus planned with a couple of choices for every meal, but there was also an option for the residents to get sort of on-demand a smaller, like fast food menu whenever they wanted, which I thought was good for people who may not want to be on the schedule of the place. It checked all the boxes for me."

"We wanted a place where we could visit my father in law freely and comfortably, and most importantly a place where he was treated with dignity and respect. Once I toured Acadia, I knew it would be the perfect place for him. The facility is absolutely beautiful and has spectacular views of the mountains. Acadia has all the comforts of home and such a peaceful atmosphere. Brad never hesitated to reach out to me via text, emails or phone conversations with updates on the status of my father in law. I always felt that my father in law was in a safe and secure environment. I was confident that the staff at Acadia had the ability and knowledge to care for my father in law. I completely recommend Acadia as very capable and loving facility for your loved one. "

"My sister is happy here. At first, we didn't have nowhere to put her, and they took her. She's happy there. They really take good care of her with her condition. She's dying of cancer, and they keep a close eye on her. She's a heavy smoker and that's the only one we found where she's allowed to smoke, and we didn't want to take that away from her with her dying. As long as she can get up and go to smoke. They're just all around good people. At certain nights of the week there's no med tech there, so if you're in severe pain and it's after 11:00, you have to deal with it. It's very clean. They get three proper meals a day and it's good quality food. You got to watch cholesterol and sugar and all that stuff, but they have healthy meals, too. They're allowed to go out and walk and do activities. They are allowed to go to the Elkton Community Center, and they do activities down there."

"Willow Estates Retirement, Inc. was a top notch facility for me. They seemed to have plenty of people in it. They had private rooms and everything was new and homey. "

"My sister-in-law is now at Sunnyside Retirement Community. Primarily, it has just been a wonderful experience. All the levels of staff (the doctors, the nurses, the health aides, and the physical therapists) are very caring, very professional, and always very kind. My sister-in-law is in a single room with her own bathroom in there. She has a lovely window where she can look out and see trees, shrubs, and things like that. She has a nice bed, a reclining chair, and straight-back chairs, so there's room for people to come in and sit down and visit with her. There's plenty of room for her to move around in. It's very comfortable. They have a dining room area. If patients aren't feeling up to it, they bring it to the room. The dining room area is very friendly. She thinks the food is very good. They have a wonderful team and nutritionists on board. They have a wide variety of food. It's very tasty for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She is overall very pleased with the food. I'm very pleased with them. Every staff person that we either talk to or interact with has been very caring, very professional, and has reached out regularly. They have taken care of any needs that my sister-in-law certainly needs and are trying to be on top of everything for her best care. It's extremely clean and well-maintained. I find it comparable to any other place that I've been to, and it's expensive, but you get quality care, quality facilities, and quality medical care. "

"There wasn't anything I didn't like about The Phoenix at Harrisonburg. They looked to have good accommodations. We had lunch with them, and I thought the food was good. The staff seemed genuinely interested in the patrons. It was a nice place. The rooms were nice and open. They looked like they had a decent layout. They did show me a two-bedroom that looked a little cramped. It was a two-bedroom, but there wasn't a seating area, and knowing the furnishings that my parents have, they wouldn't be comfortable there. The single bedroom was nice enough. I think if I could convince them to sleep in the same room, they would be willing to accommodate that. It was also much newer and they were still working out some of the kinks."

"My husband and I will be moving to The Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. We choose it because we have a daughter, a son-in-law and grandchildren in that area. I am also from that area so it feels like I am going back home. I like their set up because they go from individual cottages, to apartments, to assisted living and then nursing home. In other words, it is progressive. It goes to hospital stage. The staff is very nice. We are moving to a two-bedroom, two bath facility. There is a kitchen in the apartment, but I will not be cooking that much. It will be small but it will be sufficient. They have three dining rooms in different areas where we can eat. They have everything undercover so you don't have to walk out in the winter. They have a bank, a gift shop, a library and beauty parlor inside the buildings. The buildings are connected with covered walkways. "

"Life Care Center of New Market is where my wife is now. It is very well-appointed on the outside -- shrubbery, plants, and things like that. On the inside, the place is exceptionally clean. They have a very nice entrance, and they have a receptionist that can answer your questions very well and can direct you to the right place. The administrative staff is outstanding. They seem to go out of their way to make sure that not only the resident is taken care of, but also the family. I have had no complaints whatsoever. My wife is a diabetic, and she gets a good diabetic meal while she is there. My wife -- being in the wing where physical therapy is a need for the residents -- needs help as far as her legs and her arms go, and they give her therapy for that to improve her ability to stand and her ability to walk. I am extremely happy with them. The staff is outstanding. The nurses -- if you want to discuss anything with them -- are more than happy to freely discuss. It is the same way with the staff and the CMAs that are there as well. If they cannot answer the question, they get someone who can, which I think is a good thing. I have heard no complaints from any resident about their administration. They are very friendly. It is almost like the administration is in the front office, but they are more in the back office seeing that the residents’ needs are being met. "

"Shenandoah Place was nice. It was a little less expensive, and it was smaller and quieter. We looked over the dining room area and it was nice and clean. The staff who assisted us with the tour was nice. We liked her. The rooms were maybe a tad smaller. They didn't have a kitchenette, but they said you could put a refrigerator in there if you wanted to."

"My brother has been here about 25 years an is handicapped. He LOVES it. I would highly recommend it. It is not new but they give them love food an fun an all they need.Very reasonable. Any visits to them will b very appreciated by them as most get no visitors. We live in SC so not get their often but I do call an here can here me and smiles because he cannot talk. "

"I had a family member living at White birch communities for several years. What I liked most it is owned and operated by one family. There is always a family member ready to help out or answer questions. The staff is wonderful they all treat you with the greatest respect and always cheerful. I would highly recommend this facility. You will truly enjoy."

"We visited Bridgewater for my relative. Everything was fine. I liked it because it offered everything, like if you went into assisted living or needed more help. The staff was good. Their rooms were not as big as the others I've seen. "

"We liked The Blake at Charlottesville for my mother. It was open. I like the openness, high ceilings, and things like that, which gave a bigger feel to things that my mom, I think, would have liked. I like the people, they were nice and helpful, but just in general the appearance of the facility itself gave -- and almost felt resort-like. The staff was very accommodating, he made you feel very comfortable, his knowledge seemed to be good, and he pretty much answered all of our questions. He's very helpful and knowledgeable and just an easy person to talk to, so it was a very comfortable visit. The room we looked at if she was moving there tomorrow, it was more than one room, which I like. It gave us a situation where you could have a bedroom and a kitchenette area, and then a separate sitting area. It was not huge, obviously, but it was adequate and gave more of a home feel because you had a separation of your bed space and your living space."
