Assisted Living Communities in New Market, VA

"I visited this assisted living unannounced. The staff were wonderful, very friendly and informative. The place is newly refurbished and is spotless. The staff introduced me to resident, who each said great things about their home. Robin the administrator has worked their for 20 years and has a very soothing soul. She clearly has a passion for resident care. We will be moving my mother in here soon. The most homely one we visited and it has all levels f care. "

"My brother has been here about 25 years an is handicapped. He LOVES it. I would highly recommend it. It is not new but they give them love food an fun an all they need.Very reasonable. Any visits to them will b very appreciated by them as most get no visitors. We live in SC so not get their often but I do call an here can here me and smiles because he cannot talk. "

"The facility was beautiful, partially thanks to the amazing view (miles and miles of green fields and forest), and partially thanks to the warm antique interior. It didn't feel like a hospital, it felt like a home. From what we were shown, the food was homecooked by a talented chef, there was plenty of entertainment (performers, such as musicians and dancers, visited at least 3 times a week), and everything, especially the individual rooms, looked cozy and comfortable. We were impressed, but the reason why we couldn't use Shenandoah Place, and the reason why I've rated it 4 stars, is because the location is so distant. There is a small town next to it, but anybody coming from any reasonable location in Virginia would have to drive a considerable distance to reach the facility. Also, there was something lonely about it being in the middle of such a wide, unpopulated expanse. We weren't sure if father would like it, so we passed. It's easy to imagine someone finding a home there, though. "

"Life Care Center of New Market is where my wife is now. It is very well-appointed on the outside -- shrubbery, plants, and things like that. On the inside, the place is exceptionally clean. They have a very nice entrance, and they have a receptionist that can answer your questions very well and can direct you to the right place. The administrative staff is outstanding. They seem to go out of their way to make sure that not only the resident is taken care of, but also the family. I have had no complaints whatsoever. My wife is a diabetic, and she gets a good diabetic meal while she is there. My wife -- being in the wing where physical therapy is a need for the residents -- needs help as far as her legs and her arms go, and they give her therapy for that to improve her ability to stand and her ability to walk. I am extremely happy with them. The staff is outstanding. The nurses -- if you want to discuss anything with them -- are more than happy to freely discuss. It is the same way with the staff and the CMAs that are there as well. If they cannot answer the question, they get someone who can, which I think is a good thing. I have heard no complaints from any resident about their administration. They are very friendly. It is almost like the administration is in the front office, but they are more in the back office seeing that the residents’ needs are being met. "

"I really enjoyed this nursing home. The staff was just so welcoming when it came to having me there to entertain. They even invited me back again and to bring more friends. I was thinking about volunteering part time here, but got another job that was full time. I would go to the theatre to play for them and they would all come and enjoy it. The people seemed pretty well adjusted and independent even though there were nurses around. As I was walking around I really enjoyed the stunning-ness of the campus. It was beautiful. There were flowers blooming and the trees were blooming and there were people outside enjoying the fresh spring air. When I went to visit my relative there it was amazing. She was living in her own really fancy, a little bit small, but nice apartment. She said they always had people come and check on them and they could always call for help, but other wise your pretty much living on your own. I remember her saying that the care is different for all people. Some are checked on more than others. But overall I was very impressed with the facilities. "

"My sister is happy here. At first, we didn't have nowhere to put her, and they took her. She's happy there. They really take good care of her with her condition. She's dying of cancer, and they keep a close eye on her. She's a heavy smoker and that's the only one we found where she's allowed to smoke, and we didn't want to take that away from her with her dying. As long as she can get up and go to smoke. They're just all around good people. At certain nights of the week there's no med tech there, so if you're in severe pain and it's after 11:00, you have to deal with it. It's very clean. They get three proper meals a day and it's good quality food. You got to watch cholesterol and sugar and all that stuff, but they have healthy meals, too. They're allowed to go out and walk and do activities. They are allowed to go to the Elkton Community Center, and they do activities down there."

"The Phoenix at Harrisonburg was very nice. If you have the finances, I would recommend that. It was small, and the price is out of most people's range. What you get for that money, you could live in an apartment and pay someone to come in occasionally. We spent more time in the independent section. There were individual apartments kind of like a duplex system. It was very nice. The lady who gave us the tour was very knowledgeable and very personable. The apartment was very nice, very open, and set up well. The actual activity main area was not very large. The dining hall was small. I was not impressed with the exercise room. It's very close to the hospital. The only thing I did not like about the location is it is right off the main road. There's no quiet setting or anything like that. That was not good in my opinion."

"The staff, residents and care providers and ministers were all friendly, caring, and helpful in general. My grandparents lived in a house in the Retirement Village for many years and were happy and well-attended. When they went to "The Terrace" for closer supervision after coming down with dementia, they were also well-cared for, kindly treated and pretty happy, considering. I only have 2 issues that I was dissatisfied with. In the time between- when they moved from their house in the Village to the Main Building, but before the Terrace, they lost contact with their neighbors in the village and were allowed to withdraw from the community, and not participate in many activities; rarely leaving their suite or having any meaningful contact with peers. I really feel like this hastened the dementia, as there was no meaningful contact with anyone, and often when I called I had to say what day it was or even what time of day it was. The 2nd was that everyone in the family believed that since my grandparents had paid to have their house in the village built, and then turned it over to Sunnyside without compensation; they would be cared for on that basis, rather than charged $50k per year when they needed help. "

"This facility provides many amenities to their residence. The building is secure, and requires an entry code to get in, which makes me feel more comfortable since my grandmother resides there. The different levels are not only handicapped accessible, but so are the laundry room and community center. As well the center holds numerous community activities for my grandmother to participate in. The mail, groceries and other items can also be delivered to her, which makes the burden less on her too. She really enjoys this facility, because although she has help, she is also able to feel independent. The facility is apartment style, so she has her own kitchen living room and bedroom quarters, but is provided with help when needed. Overall I ,love this facility because she feels like she is a part of something outside of her family and can still contribute to society. If I ever need to recommend an assisted living facility to someone, they would be the first on my list. "

"My mother is in Dutch Haven Assisted Living and I like it all. The layout is great, and it's broken up into little sections. The attendants, nurses, and aides are superior. The dining area is always clean and they serve the food according to the patients; they're great. They do activities like bingo, little art activities, planting activities, and they actually brought in a little bird aviary with finches in it so they can all enjoy it. It has been great. The staff is great and the residents all seemed to enjoy the food, and they fix it the way they can have it. It's an older community, and it's an older home that's converted, so it's very homey and comfortable. They have a lot of activities."

"We really like White Birch Estates. It's a beautiful countryside facility and it is very nice. The place seemed warm and inviting. It has a friendly environment and very uplifting. They have card rooms and activities for the residents. They have exercise classes. They have crafts available, reading, and television. They also have a chapel. They have bingo and trips and lots of other things. "

"My grandparents spent the last 6 years of their lives living in this community. I was absolutely a beautiful place filled with wonderful people (both staff and neighbors). I know it will be quite a while before I am of age to move there but I really love the community and plan to move there. The community is designed for graduated care, meaning that as your level of need is increases, the level of care increases. Also, it is within walking distance of a lovely church and Bridgewater College. Bridgewater Retirement Community is a piece of heaven on earth!! "

"Hidden Springs was very clean, had a very friendly atmosphere, and they were very helpful. They had a game room, activity room, and front porches. The food was very good. They had senior yoga, Bingo, and brain games, and they're very good about taking people out. I've visited other centers and this is the nicest one around by far. I would recommend it to anyone. It's family owned and they take a personal interest in the clients and how the place is run."

"I highly recommend this small home-like facility owned and operated by Gerontology Certified Registered Nurses.Care for your loved ones is supervised by nurses.You will feel safe for your parents knowing that the caregivers and management know what they are doing.The management is reachable 24 hours a day. The care is very personal and the caregivers are very patient, kind and compassionate.They encourage family and friends to visit.It is located on the foothills and the place DOES NOT look and smell like nursing home. They are also cheaper than other families, but the quality and services are superb. God bless this place."
