"I toured. It just had a lot more amenities. Very, very clean. The staff was very friendly, and there seemed to be a lot of good vibes there."

"I toured Integrity - The Hermitage. It was terrible. The grounds were not kept up. Inside, the walls were banged. It was not clean, and it smelled. They were eating on paper plates with plastic forks in the dining hall. It did not look like the place where I wanted my mom to be."

"The people are caring and things are going as well as about what could be expected. My wife is in the memory care unit in a private room, but they also have shared rooms. They have music, little events, and games."

"The only one that I visited and liked was Penick Village. It was very clean. The staff was really nice. They were very attentive when I came in unannounced. I like that. It wasn't a smelly place. The people seemed to be comfortable there. The room was a nice size. It was equipped with a television. My mother would be able to bring in some personal things that would make it very homey, and I like that. They have an exercise room. They have activities. They have a beautiful outdoor area which you could go out and sit. They have a nice sitting room. It was very nice. They allow you to come in at any time, they don't restrict you a visit. If you wanted to stay overnight, there would be a nice recliner. They were just very accommodating ,and I really like that. "

"The Coventry is part of St. Joseph of the Pines Continuing Care Retirement Community. I was told they do not accept potential residents from the community - you have to be part of the buy-in system for independent living with exorbitant up front costs. Good to know. "

"Tara Plantation was nice. They had two separate wings for the dementia unit. It is secure. They had plenty of adequate space, so the residents could go outside if they wanted to. They had a courtyard. It was a lot of space. The facility itself was older, but it was very well-kept. The residents were kept active. "

"I toured the Autumn Care of Raeford. It was an old facility, but it was clean. They had activities. They stopped what they were doing and gave me a tour right then, and I just walked in. So, they even talked to me about prices and all that stuff. They showed me the shower rooms. They even told me they shower them like three times a week unless we asked them to do it more. If we wanted them to have a shower every day, then that's what they would do. The staff was very friendly. For my aunt's stage, they don't have a single room. They have two people in it, and for two people their rooms were small."

"I went to Open Arms Retirement Center. The tour was very excellent. It was outstanding. Going through the building, everything was very clean. It smelled good. The rooms were very roomy. It had an atmosphere of being home. The staff are very attentive and very knowledgeable. I got to see them eating, and they seemed to be enjoying it. The grounds were very well kept, and the building was very clean. They said they have bingo and some exercise stuff in the dayroom. They let them exercise walking them around."

"The facilities were well maintained and clean. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The housing is located in long tiers. In my cousin's case, the room looked out onto a brick wall across a short distance. Though significant, that was the only real aesthetic issue; the floors, walls, and furnishings in the common areas were fresh, in good condition, and comfortable. The food looked palatable (I did not have the opportunity to sample any of it personally), and my cousin was reasonably happy with the fare. Menu items included traditional breakfast items and standard fare for luncheon and dinner. Occasionally, an exotic dish would be offered. That was not important to my cousin, but some of the residents (and me, were I to be living there) really seemed to relish special menu items. Of course, many residents are on dietary restrictions that severely limit their choice. The staff will occasionally bring a surprise treat of ice cream that is uniformly well received. I would consider this facility if I needed to live with assistance. "

"Hamlet House had private rooms. It was very clean. There were no offensive smells. The residents seemed to be very happy and taken care of. The staff who gave the tour knew many things about the home, and she was excellent."
