"I went to look at The Whitcomb Senior Living Community. When we walked in, it was very spacious and very nice. They have separate rooms. They have a sitting room where they have a piano bar and entertainment. They came down later, and they did arts and crafts. They were doing ceramic Christmas ornaments, painting ceramic trees, and different ornaments. They have a section for movie nights and popcorn. They have games in the dining room area. The different floors have different kinds of people, depending on the needs. The rooms we looked at were very clean. The staff is very nice. The people that were living there and who we talked to seemed to enjoy it. It overlooks the lake in the river, and you could see the White House from there. It had a really nice shopping area. There was a hairdresser next door. You can go to different stores. They have banking there. It was very convenient and very nice. They do a lot to accommodate you. It's not cheap though, but none of the places are. They have outings. They go to Myer every Thursday. They have casino trips. It's a very good place to be. It does need some repairs and modifications. With COVID, they stopped the renovation that they were doing. But other than that, they're doing a great job. From what we've seen and the people we talked to, everything was good. They have the menu posted for the day. They have different meals each day, so it's not the same thing. They have a section there if you just want to come down in the morning and have coffee and chat with people."

"My husband will be moving to Blueberry Hill Assisted Living. We had a very nice tour of the place, and the staff was very nice and informative. They also have lots of things for the residents to get involved in. I don't think the assisted living room we saw was the largest, but there was nothing wrong with it. The upkeep of the place was very good, too. We went through the dining area, and it was very clean."

"My uncle is comfortable at Kelly's Hillside Manor. He likes the other people who live there. He likes the guy who owns the place who also takes him to all his doctors' appointments. My uncle shares a room with a fella and they get along really well. The owner's wife is from the Philippines and she does all the cooking, so she cooks Filipino food and my uncle really likes it. The owner takes them out for a pizza once every two weeks and asks them if they want to go to a movie and if they do, he takes them. Don, the owner, is a really great guy who cares a lot about the people. He always talks to them and listens to what they have to say."

"We've chosen American House Holland for my mom. It has spacious rooms, caring staff, and they have activities, but not during COVID. They have laundry, housekeeping, and meals. She's got a very large area, with a kitchenette, and a separate bedroom and private bathroom. She hasn't had any activities yet because of the shutdown."

"My parents moved to Laurel Oaks of South Haven and they're doing well there. It is new, so the amenities on the site are new. It's only about two years old. They have an administrative nurse who is there at least five days a week, if not more. The staff is friendly. They have both assisted living and memory care. They have field trips, as well as activities onsite. They also have a salon onsite for them to have their hair done, and three meals a day. It's also in close proximity to one of their children, so that works out really well. They started out in assisted living, but it became obvious they needed more, so they're now in memory care. What needs to be improved is some of the communication back and forth with the administrative staff when you want an answer or you call. I realize they're busy. They have a lot of patients. One of the things that we had to work with the staff on was we didn't want phone calls for every little thing, like if there was a stomachache. They're elderly and they tend to have a lot of hallucinations. It's probably one of the more expensive ones, but we have two parents in memory care, so that adds to the cost considerably, and we know that."

"Lighthouse Assisted Living was small but very homey. It gave you a feeling of almost being in a home rather than an institution. They may only have six or seven residents, I think. The place was very clean, and the owner who showed me around was very informative. In fact, she had worked for a senior-living facility for eighteen years, so she's very experienced. The other staff member was very pleasant too. The menu looked very nice, and they said that it was just like a regular kitchen in your home. It's not a huge kitchen, though, since they didn't have that many residents. They had a piano, a table that was set up with puzzles, a nice patio in the back with chairs, a grilling area, and a laundry facility."

"My step mother moved into the Willows Assisted Living for approximately a month now, so as far as were concerned, everythings been good, but step mom is in an adjustment period. Shes in assisted living, and she had to have help, because she walks through the walker. The atmosphere is very warm, very welcoming, and everybody is friendly. The rooms are very nice, spacious, and we put in a queen-size bed, an apartment-size couch, swivel chair, and a new TV in her room. Its pretty accommodating. The staff is very helpful, very knowledgeable, and does what the boss tells them to do. Theyre comfortable in what theyre doing. They have something going on a minimum of four days out of seven, and they have different activities. For St. Patrick's Day, they decorated all the tables, played games, and one person came in, sang and played the keyboard. It seemed like theyre concerned about the residents and want the people to be happy. Were solely responsible for doctors appointments and medical appointments. The price is one of the motivation factors for us. Its a missionary-type thing. You have to pay out-of-pocket for the first two years minimum; after that if something happened and the resident ran out of money, they will take Medicaid or Social Security, and they do not put you out on the street. Its close to home, really convenient, and were there in 15 or 20 minutes, and that was a real plus for us."

"We toured White Oaks. What I liked about it was that it was very busy. There were lots of people around, residents, and staff. Kathy is the one who took me on the tour and she did a great job answering questions. She followed up as well. For the activities, I asked questions like, "I think my mom would need someone beside her if she went on an activity". So she told me how they would handle that situation. We didn't see any of the regular rooms. They have two sections that are for memory care, and they're nice rooms. They're big enough that you could have a twin bed, a dresser, a recliner, or a loveseat. They were big enough and clean. I like their place, too. I think the building was well-maintained and it appeared to be clean. I didn't see anything that needed to be done."

"Caretel Inns of St. Joseph seemed good. We went in the evening, so they were winding down and doing stuff. There weren't a lot of people out and about. The gentleman went into a long discussion about their care and gave us some information about getting medical help. Then he walked us through personally himself and showed us some of the stuff. He did well. The place was clean. They serve meals and do bus outings. They have a hair salon, a massage/spa room, and a little area for eating (that was closed at the time). It's not far from the hospital. There are restaurants within 10 to 15 minutes."

"My mom is in Appledorn. I like that they have independent living. They also have a retirement community, and they have a lot of activities. There are a lot of personal hands-on things. It is very bright. It is not a rest home. It is an assisted living, so, the level of care is based on your needs. All of the meds are administered by med techs so you know that the person that you have in there gets their meds on a regular basis, as they should. There is a visiting doctor and a visiting podiatrist. You can have their services too, if you want. They have meals. They have access to coffee 24/7. They have nursing staff available. I think they are definitely a caring facility. If you have concerns, they listen. "

"I looked at the assisted living in Appledorn Assisted Living Center North. I like that they really make an effort to get everyone involved in their daily activities. I like that you don't have to buy into the place. It's just per month, and I like that there are many variable levels of care. You don't get one level of care for one fee. You only pay for what you need, so you pay for level 2 or you pay for level 15. They also have a small living room and a dining room."

"I recenly visited this facility and found it to be clean with residents and staff that were so kind and caring, like one big happy family. I was happy to know that they allow small pets. The facility had a beautiful fish tank and several birds for all to enjoy. I can't wait for when my father is ready to make the move. This will be the perfect home for him. "

"We chose Diana's Care LLC for my grandma, and she already moved in. It's been great so far, it's a small community, and they only have nine other people. She likes it, the people who work there are very caring and kind, her room is a good size, and we brought all her furniture. She seems to like the food, it's comfort food basically, and they take care of their nutrition. This place was affordable and close to home."

"Bluff Lake Specialized Care is a house and it's very clean, very open, and there's no odor. They only take six residents, and they take Medicaid waivers. We talked with the owner and two of the staff members. We saw them working with one of the residents and they were talking to them beautifully. It had a very comfortable warm feeling. They take them twice a week to the Senior Center for activities. We saw a couple of private, single rooms."
