Braintree, Massachusetts, a small town just outside of Boston, is a top destination for retirees in the Northeast. It’s home to an estimated 39,143 people, of whom around 6,600 are aged 65 or older. With low health care costs and a comfort index that matches the national average, Braintree is an ideal retirement spot for seniors who enjoy all types of weather, including plenty of snow.
Active seniors who live a mostly independent lifestyle but who need help with a few tasks may prefer retirement in an assisted living facility. Assisted living care includes help with things such as housekeeping, meal preparation, transportation and personal care, along with any other nonmedical assistance that a senior might need to continue living independently. Assisted living facilities fill in the gap for seniors who can’t do it all alone, but who don’t need the constant medical care offered by a nursing home. The average cost of assisted living in Braintree is $6,100 per month, which is comparable to the state median of $6,085, according to the Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey.
This guide offers an in-depth look at some of the benefits and drawbacks to assisted living in Braintree. It also includes information on costs and a list of free, local resources that seniors may find helpful.

Sunrise of Braintree was lovely. The staff was excellent, very informative, very nice, and answered all our questions. It was very cozy. It was a very grand place, and it was very big. The apartments were a little small, but the entryway was very big. They said they had activities available. They had movie nights, a library, and music programs, but we didn’t see any of that going on. We were there on a Saturday morning. We just saw people moving around.

The time came for a move for our parent. Not an easy decsion for any of us. We found the location to be right for many family members. The rooms were bright and very clean. The staff was very friendly when we toured both times. People were out side on the patio. It was nice to see them out in good weather.
The front patio had quite a few people there and they all said hello as we walked up to the door. We did move our family member in and it was a very good experience for all.

I only met this one woman, and we just went on a quick tour. The place needed a little bit of work. The location was a little bit further away from me, but Walpole is pretty easy to get to. It is a nice residential area. It is right near an old hospital that is not open at the moment. The outdoor space was very nice and lovely. They had a lovely area for the residents to sit outside.

We looked at Springhouse Senior Living. It was a lovely facility, and the tour was given by a very experienced person in the field. She did a nice job of explaining what they offered. She helped us see the various levels of care that they offer. She helped us locate our requests in the spectrum of facilities that are out there.
It was clean and up-to-date. Now that I’ve seen a bunch of places, I would say that Spring House has high-quality finishes. The size of the rooms was decent. Nothing would fit the bill of being spacious, but they were a good size. It was a home where the residents are a group of professionals for the most part. They had a lovely library. They had good trips they took people on, and they had a good array of activities.

My mother moved into Benchmark Senior Living on Clapboardtree. I just came back from there yesterday and they were having a St Patrick’s Day, little party at the Bistro. There’s food, and they had it all decorated. It was nice. The food is excellent. She likes the food. A lot of activities, we’re still making sure she does her activities and stuff. It’s a very clean and very nice place. She has only been there for about a month.
The staff’s been great, they remember everybody’s names, and they’re really on top of everything. They always ask for something to eat in the Bistro 24/7. There’s always food available for them. The facility is very nice, and it’s very easy to maneuver around where you’re going, çause everything is kind of in a circle. You don’t get lost, it’s not an overwhelming place. It’s a great layout.
They always have something going on, bingo or they have crafts, and in the bistro, they have people coming in and playing music, so there’s always something for them to do. A lot of the stuff is ala carte. You need something extra and you’re going to pay for it. We pay for her medications to be distributed to her twice a day. Any add ons you have to pay, so they can get a little pricey. When she first got there, she ordered toast to be brought up to her room. I said, this is not a hotel, and you’ve just been charged five dollars. When you first get there, you’re a little nervous, you don’t know anybody, but they all make you feel welcome there. The residents look after the other ones, they all look after each other, which is nice.

Our family appreciates all that the Arbors had to offer Mom while she was there. Everyone there was so helpful and kind to her and to us. We have nothing but accolades for the Arbors; Very personable, employees working together as teams, encouraging our loved ones, caring for them, offering creative activities. The services such as the hair salon, and podiatrist coming in as well as the wonderful nurses on staff made our life easier as well. We enjoyed using the Pub last year for the family to celebrate Mom’s 96th birthday. Many of the Aids became special to mom, many went above and beyond. Courtney in the office was so pleasant and was always available to answer our questions. Linda & Casandra at the front desk become our friends. The facility and apartments are bright and kept very clean by a great cleaning team. Laundry and bedding done up every week. The Maintenance guys were on the ball, quick to respond, accommodating and very pleasant. Mom did have some issues with the food, but it is very hard to please everyone as people are so different in their preferences. The chef went out of her way to help resolve any complaints. I found the director, Pattie Ricketts, to be very involved and caring. Mom enjoyed times when Pattie stopped in and visited with her. She added the personal touch, a listening ear, she could solve problems, and had a fun personality. I thought she was very good at her job and seemed to like what she does which makes all the difference.
Sadly my mom passed away so we are no longer there but I certainly recommend the Arbors in Stoughton to any one who is looking for a place for their loved ones. I felt it was the perfect size, offered the nicest apartment space (very spacious) and the price very reasonable compared to other places we looked at. Mom was at Linden Ponds in Hingham before going to the Arbors. What they offered for assisted care was very limited compared to what the Arbors had to offer. Our family was so happy that mom had two years with the Arbor family. . . and yes they became family to us!

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Braintree
- Braintree is a great choice for seniors who avoid very hot weather, with summer temperatures that rarely exceed 84 degrees. While the winter months can be quite cold with January lows of 19 degrees, assisted living facilities keep the temperature set to cozy, year-round, and take on all the hassle of shoveling snow.
- While Braintree is on the high side for the cost of living, at 17.1 points higher than the state average, low costs for health care can help keep this area affordable, particularly for seniors that don’t own property in the region. Housing is the single highest demographic when comparing the cost of living, so seniors in an assisted living facility may avoid some of the increased expense.
- A low crime rate is one of the reasons seniors may be drawn to Braintree. Both property and violent crime rates are well below the national average here, while violent crime is well below state and regional averages. Boston and the state as a whole do have a slightly lower property crime rate, but seniors in an assisted living community can enjoy added peace of mind by discussing security features such as alarm systems, secured entry, and video surveillance at doors to address any concerns.
- Massachusetts allows seniors to keep all of their Social Security benefits tax-free, and some pension plans may also be exempt from income tax. Other forms of retirement income do have taxes assessed, but typically at a reduced rate compared to standard income tax. These retirement-friendly tax policies help make it more affordable to consider retirement in Braintree.
- Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority extends service to the Braintree area. With public transit readily available, seniors can easily get out and about to run errands or make it to medical appointments. In addition, the Department of Elder Affairs offers van rides for seniors to and from medical appointments, senior center activities and shopping trips for a nominal suggested donation.

The Cost of Other Types of Senior Care
Assisted living is just one of the options available to Braintree seniors for long-term care. Adult day health care is the most affordable choice at $1,782 per month, but it’s not ideal for seniors that need help seven days a week or outside of normal business hours. In-home care options average $5,720 per month but don’t include room and board, which makes this one of the more expensive options. Nursing home care is the most expensive long-term care option at $13,383 per month for a shared room or $14,509 for a private room.
