We hired Way to Stay Homecare. We had them with increasing amounts as time passed. So at the beginning it was just a couple hours a week just to check on my dad, and then more and more as needed. You can have 24-hour care through them if you want. At the beginning, they didn't want to be contracted for less than two hours, but I only used them three times a week. They do anything a nurse's aide would do like bathing, dressing, preparing food, feeding, toileting, and ambulating. Any housekeeping that you would want done they would do, or just providing companionship. They would do either diapers to change or give you a bath, but not medication. They also have that service where they will go to the pharmacy to set up a pre-filled medication box, and they would help the patient get the box and look at what's on the box's slots and make sure that they take the pills. They can do that much but they won't have any idea what the pills are or do any nursing type things. They try to have the same caregiver come in every time, but sometimes that's not feasible. Their agency really tried to work with us. The cost was comparable and allowed my dad to remain in independent living for so long.
