The midsize city of Tacoma, Washington, is scenically located between the Pacific Ocean and Mount Rainier. This bustling city offers generally mild weather and sophisticated urban living. Tacoma also delivers on recreational opportunities, such as 760-acre Point Defiance Park, which showcases the region’s natural beauty. More urban pleasures include the Tacoma Farmers Market, Tacoma Museum District and an over 210,000 square-foot performing arts complex. Tacoma has a population of just 217,827 people, 13% of whom are aged 65 and older, which is slightly below the U.S. average of 16.5%.

High-quality healthcare is easily accessible in Tacoma. The city is home to major hospitals, such as MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital and St. Joseph Medical Center, which are both in the central area of the city.  According to Genworth Financial’s 2020 Cost of Care Survey, Tacoma’s average monthly cost for homemaker services is $6,340, while home health aide services cost $6,435 per month. These rates are considerably higher than the respective national averages of $4,481 and $4,576.

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Tacoma:

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
