I let her down

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

A dear friend of mine was a rehabilitation patient at Kane Medical Facility. Her primary diagnosis was congestive heart failure. There was an order for her to ambulate each shift. There was no documentation that this was done and when visiting Linda she informed me that she was not allowed to walk without assistance and she has not even been allowed to go to the bathroom alone or provide her own bathroom hygiene. When reviewing the record she was ambulating shorter distance after 3 weeks of “rehabilitation” than when she left the hospital. The facility failed to provide the standard of care for a patient with a diagnosis of congestive heart failure. As a nurse I had witnessed the nursing staff provide treatments that were not ordered, Increase the oxygen flow rate and they did not provide the treatments and care that was ordered such as daily weights. When I and family had informed the nursing staff on 1/14 – 1/15 that the patient was having trouble breathing and may be experiencing an exacerbation of congestive heart failure were told “of course she is. Have you looked at her legs” There was no documentation of assessment or intervention. She was sent to St Clair hospital at the end of January. The emergency room nursing staff reported that she had bed sores on her back and she was septic. She passed away a few hours after being sent to the ER. This is a HORRIBLE place to leave your loved one. If the facility does not have the staffing to take proper care of the patients, then they should not be accepting new patients.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother’s care at Kane Community Living Center – Scott Township was deeply disappointing. After mid‑February, her basic needs were neglected, missed daily weights, missed therapy, and repeated episodes of being left in urine or sleeping in her wheelchair. Staff ignored family concerns about her breathing on 2/14, and her condition worsened until she had to be sent back to the hospital, where she passed away shortly after. We expected safe, attentive care, but that expectation was not met.

My dad is in Kane Regional Facility Scott Township. He is in the dementia ward, so it's a locked-down ward, but they also have other people who are there who are not in that situation. He was also there before for some rehab. I like it very much. I met this family, and their mom had just left Kane because she had passed away. She was there for like three years and they absolutely loved them and recommended it fully. It was a fantastic location in Scott Township. I love it there. The nursing staff is so great. They know my dad. They know us by name. Everybody knows everybody. They call me if there are any issues. They take him out on trips, even though he's in the dementia ward. They take them out all the time. He went to the aviary the other day and plays bingo, and he's thriving there. He's been there now for a couple of months, and he's only doing better and better since he's been there. The staff is great. They know everything about my dad, and they accommodate him. I'm not there when he's eating meals, but I don't have any problems with anything that he's eating. Everything seems good. They're regimented with the time that they do it, and they have a lot of people that they are serving at one time. You can't sit with them in the dining room, but I could take him to his room or into a conference room. The facility is not the most beautiful, but the service overcomes that. The staff is so great. They have a courtyard where you can take him outside. We take him out of the facility all the time, which we can do, and have no issues at all with that. They have games during the week. They have a calendar of all the different things that are happening and when they're happening. It's posted in every resident's room so they know what's going on, and we know what is going on, more importantly. They're interacting with my dad, and my dad's going out of the community. The other thing they do at Kane is if your finances don't meet what they need, they work through Social Security to help obtain the rest of the money for you. You have to provide the paperwork and everything, but they're helping us do all of that.

Clean room every time we visited, the hallways smell clean no urine smell. We couldn’t ask for better care , everyone was respectful, kind to residents and their families. I wish we had known how wonderful Kane Scott was when our mother needed to be placed in a nursing facility for the Alzheimer . Nunny’s Family

I visited this facility

My husband is currently in the long- term care unit on the third floor. The nurses, therapists and aides as very caring and compassionate. The care they provide is exceptional and the therapists immediately got my husband a special cushion when he complained his backside bothered him. My husband is clean, his room is clean and the only thing he complains about is the food (but not all of the time). Thank you Tammy, Dave, Tim, Anita, Peter, Marybeth, Arthur, Gary, Theresa, Diane, Stacy, Ling, Jeff, Darryl and anyone I may have missed for taking good care of my husband. You are all amazing!

I am/was a resident of this facility

Please do your due diligence when thinking about putting a loved one in this facility!! I was a patient and due to the horrible conditions ( very dirty) and horrible bedside manner of most of the aides working with the patients, not to mention how rough they were when actually handling a patient; my husband removed me from the facility against doctors orders. Had my husband not removed me I might not be here today! My liver and kidneys were shutting down and I had to be taken to another hospital so they could remove all of the fluids being retained in my belly area ( I looked 15 months pregnany) I was in so much pain the pain medication wasn't working. Please, please do your research prior to putting your loved ones in here!

I visited this facility

The only reason that people use this facility is because Medicare pays for it. It is just care. The bed side manner is the worst around. They have the rudest therapists I have ever seen. Nurses think they are doctors. It is a county hospital it is dirty the food is horrible. They charge outrageous prices fo the crap care they give.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Because this was a County facility, I was very concerned about the quality of the care and of the facility itself. The Kane Regional Facility in Scott Township, however, far exceeded my expectations. The staff was large, well-trained, and compassionate. The building was large and clean, with recreation rooms and an outdoor courtyard. The food was well prepared and nutritious. I was surprised that a government facility as this was actually better than the more expensive private facility my father had been in previously.
