"My friend is a cantankerous person and hard to deal with, but Accura HealthCare seems to be handling her OK. They keep a good eye on her. They have rehab for her for a couple of weeks and different machines she can work on. They play bingo and typical nursing home activities, too. The staff members seem very good. They have lots of staff members. My friend is in a small room. She seems to eat OK, so the food is probably good."

"My mom is in Arboreta Health and Rehabilitation Grandview Health Care Center for long-term care. They're helping her with medicine and food. They helped her get out of the recliner into the wheelchair. Her room is small, but it's adequate. There's only room for a bed and a dresser, but the food is excellent, and also the staff."

"We have found a place in Story City called Bethany Life, and we're on the waiting list. They were able to take Medicaid. When you walk in, it's secure. They are very welcoming. It doesn't feel like it's a clinical setting. You walk in and there are places to sit that are comfy, and there's a bistro, too. It feels like you're walking into an apartment building, but they're very safe and secure. They have you screened in and screened out, your temperatures are taken, and you have to have a name badge, or you're not allowed in any area. It doesn't matter who you are, you have to do this unless you're an employee. Their food was good. They also offer food that's made to order. The facility is broken down into like four homes. They call them different things. We got to tour Ivy's House and then they have Christine's House, and then there's two other houses. They've just taken each section of the facility. Like if somebody is needing more care or they have dementia, I think they have like a memory unit, and so my father would be needing to go to a unit that still needs assistance, but they're a little more social. Depending on their needs, they try and put them in a particular house within the facility. So, the dining area is just for that particular house. It's a very small intimate-type setting. There might only be 20 people in the whole house, so those who want to dine at the table can be brought in, and it's just like eating at a little cafe."

"My mother is in Eden Acres in Perry. She likes it there, but she's too independent, too cognizant, too outgoing to feel tied up. She was there with my dad and my dad passed. She was in assisted living with my father and then he went to long term care in the same facility, so she stayed in assisted living to be close to my dad who was just down the hall. The facility is extremely clean and well taken care of. My mom's assisted living apartment is almost as big as my 800 sq ft house. She paid $2800 and everything is included. If she moved 20 miles closer to Des Moines, it would have cost her $4400, so the price is definitely right. A $1500 difference is a lot of money for someone that's retired. They cover everything. I know that it's tiered; as far as the assisted living. My mom is in tier 1 because she doesn't really need a lot of help, they just come in for temperature checks every day. She gets her food, too, because the price includes everything. It's very clean. The long-term place that my dad was also in were single rooms. He didn't have to share rooms with anybody. The rooms also include an ensuite bathroom, which you don't find in many places. I've eaten there with her before as well. They have 3 different chefs there and I can honestly say that the food was exceptional. It's just a beautiful facility and it's 28 miles from Des Moines so I would highly recommend it to everyone."

"Each time I visited the Rowley Masonic Home, the staff greeted me cheerfully and inquired about my family. Each team member offered assessments from her / his own unique perspective (nurse, medication aide, dining attendant, CNA) and this gave me a much clearer picture about my grandmother's physical and emotional well-being. I never felt like I had to pry in order to obtain information nor was I made to feel like a bother. The staff were very kind. Even my grandmother -- who is accustomed to living independently and prefers to be alone -- remarked at how caring and lovely everyone was to her. They never patronized her and always engaged her in lively, intelligent conversations. The medication aide was very patient on those few occasions when grandmother would repeatedly ask about whether it was time for her pills, forgetting that she had taken them earlier in the day. The CNAs would encourage grandmother when she was doing her physical therapy exercises and would marvel about the great shape she was in for her age. The dining staff would drop by to remind her of meal times and give a brief overview of what choices were on the menu. Each time I was present at meal time, I was impressed with the quality and presentation of the food. It always looked and smelled delicious and was certainly not the stereotypical bland, boring hospital food! The dining room was comfortable and the meals were served restaurant-style. Although the lodgings were a bit small, they were cozy and residents were encouraged to bring items from home to make the stay more comfortable. Staff even assisted our family while we moved in a favorite chair, coffee table, reading lamp, and television. When it came time for my grandmother to leave, the staff seemed genuinely sad to see her go, but they also were very supportive of her desire to get back to her own home. I would not hesitate to recommend this facility to others who are considering assisted living facilities for their loved ones. "

"My brother has been at Polk City for about 5 years now, he loves the staff and says the food is really good. My brother and his wife joined our brother for a Thanksgiving dinner they said the food was excellent. My brother loves all the activities and we have had no issues with his stay so far."

"They had my aunt in Rolling Green Village. They have very attentive staff, not a lot of activities for the group she was in, but they did a lot of checking of everybody every day, making sure the little things that each person liked was taken care of. She was there for rehab. The room she shared was well-kept and clean, and they took care of it every day. They are more for people who can't get around, and who really need the one on one care of medical people. All the nurses were incredibly nice, and very helpful to the family. It was a very reasonable price for the care that was needed."

"My husband was at The Bridges at Ankeny, and he received excellent care. I was very happy with the care, and I was especially happy with their discharge planning because they were very clear about what his needs were and that kind of thing. They have a very nice and wonderful staff. My husband was on soft food, and they had to grind up all the food and everything. He was on a special diet, and as far as I could tell, it was fine. But my husband didn't like having to be on a special diet. His room was private, and it was good. The facility was beautiful, very well kept, and new. I didn't see any activities, and my husband didn't want any. But he did have physical therapy, so that kept him occupied. Medicare paid for this at this point because he came from a hospital."

"This is is a very friendly community. There are always things to do. The staff is responsive to my needs. "

"Sunny View Care Center is a small facility. The staff was very helpful. They were very willing and very able to answer questions. They were pleasant. They seemed like they wanted to connect and fill out what the person needed. However, it wasn't quite as neatly kept. Not that it didn't look like they weren't able to do the job, but I felt more comfortable over at the other place. The first thing I walked into was a cafeteria. It was nice. It wasn't dirty. But it was more hectic and congested because it was smaller than the other place."

"Spurgeon Manor was a beautiful facility. It has all levels. They have independent, assisted, and memory care. I don't know much about the staff. It was just a short visit inquiry. I know a lot of people that have relatives there, and they do a good job. The dining room and common spaces were all very bright and clean. I pretty much looked only at the memory care area, but I have been in the independent and assisted living quarters. The independent quarters were very nice. I visited some people there that were doing rehab, and they have an excellent rehab department. I only talked to one lady and she was very nice, courteous, and knowledgeable. I was there on a Sunday afternoon, and it was pretty quiet."

"Crestview Manor was affordable and my mother's choice. The staff were assistive and informative. I liked the location, and it was clean and peaceful. My mom liked the room because it was the right size for her. The residents seemed happy there. "

"My grandmother stayed at this nursing home while recovering from shoulder surgery. This facility had assisted living and a nursing/rehabilitation wing. It was a great facility that offered shared and private rooms. The smell within was pleasant and was not the typical "nursing home" smell. My grandmother greatly enjoyed her stay here. She said that they had a lot of extracurricular activities available to the residents that included Wii Bowling and Baseball, Ice Cream Socials, Tea Parties and many more. She requested that if she ever needed to go back for an extended period of time she would want to go back! "

"My mother is in Bishop Drum Retirement Center. We chose it because it was convenient for my family to visit her there. Their prices are reasonable for the area, and it's an all-in-one place. They have independent living, senior living, and a nursing home, all in one facility. They have a good nursing staff. They have a nurse on duty all the time. They have a doctor on call at all times. It's an older facility, but it's well-kept and clean. I never had any issues with that."
