"Bickford of Urbandale is doing a good job. My wife is in the memory care area and the only people who work there are the people that enjoy it. It's very clean and neat. They've got a barber shop and salon where she comes in just every now and then. They're just short on help, but the staff is very good. The dining room is very nice and it's the right size for the number of people that eat there."

"My aunt was in the assisted living facility. It has a lot of activities, which I was happy to see. We got to eat lunch with her there, and it had an area that you could walk around outside without having the doors locked because it was kind of in a circle. She liked that really well. One of the activities she did with them was planting some roses in their garden. She stayed there about three months, and the staff was really good. They always came in and reminded her of who they were and what function they had there. Their food was really nice, too. She was also able to sit at different tables that she wanted to. She liked not being assigned a place, but sitting down where she wanted to talk with people. She made a little circle of friends there."

"My mother is in Eden Acres in Perry. She likes it there, but she's too independent, too cognizant, too outgoing to feel tied up. She was there with my dad and my dad passed. She was in assisted living with my father and then he went to long term care in the same facility, so she stayed in assisted living to be close to my dad who was just down the hall. The facility is extremely clean and well taken care of. My mom's assisted living apartment is almost as big as my 800 sq ft house. She paid $2800 and everything is included. If she moved 20 miles closer to Des Moines, it would have cost her $4400, so the price is definitely right. A $1500 difference is a lot of money for someone that's retired. They cover everything. I know that it's tiered; as far as the assisted living. My mom is in tier 1 because she doesn't really need a lot of help, they just come in for temperature checks every day. She gets her food, too, because the price includes everything. It's very clean. The long-term place that my dad was also in were single rooms. He didn't have to share rooms with anybody. The rooms also include an ensuite bathroom, which you don't find in many places. I've eaten there with her before as well. They have 3 different chefs there and I can honestly say that the food was exceptional. It's just a beautiful facility and it's 28 miles from Des Moines so I would highly recommend it to everyone."

"Each time I visited the Rowley Masonic Home, the staff greeted me cheerfully and inquired about my family. Each team member offered assessments from her / his own unique perspective (nurse, medication aide, dining attendant, CNA) and this gave me a much clearer picture about my grandmother's physical and emotional well-being. I never felt like I had to pry in order to obtain information nor was I made to feel like a bother. The staff were very kind. Even my grandmother -- who is accustomed to living independently and prefers to be alone -- remarked at how caring and lovely everyone was to her. They never patronized her and always engaged her in lively, intelligent conversations. The medication aide was very patient on those few occasions when grandmother would repeatedly ask about whether it was time for her pills, forgetting that she had taken them earlier in the day. The CNAs would encourage grandmother when she was doing her physical therapy exercises and would marvel about the great shape she was in for her age. The dining staff would drop by to remind her of meal times and give a brief overview of what choices were on the menu. Each time I was present at meal time, I was impressed with the quality and presentation of the food. It always looked and smelled delicious and was certainly not the stereotypical bland, boring hospital food! The dining room was comfortable and the meals were served restaurant-style. Although the lodgings were a bit small, they were cozy and residents were encouraged to bring items from home to make the stay more comfortable. Staff even assisted our family while we moved in a favorite chair, coffee table, reading lamp, and television. When it came time for my grandmother to leave, the staff seemed genuinely sad to see her go, but they also were very supportive of her desire to get back to her own home. I would not hesitate to recommend this facility to others who are considering assisted living facilities for their loved ones. "

"My mother has lived at Windsor manor for 7 1/2years. The current administration and staff go over and above to meet the needs of an individual resident. The rooms in assisted living are apartment style, are warm and welcoming with the high ceilings and kitchens. There is an abundance of ways to entertain guests from inside the apartment, the sun room, court yard, library, common living room and dining room. The staff are always willing to help and assist in any way. There are a variety apartments to choose from, to cater to your personal needs. The memory care unit is hands down the best. There are only 10 rooms, bedroom style with a shared living room and dining room. At first, memory care is a scary uncharted experience. But the staff are well educated in memory care and exceptional in assisting in the transition. There are lots of activities throughout entire facility that all residents can join in on, including bingo, fitness classes, music, parties. Also a hair salon to have your hair and nails done. It has become my mothers home where she feels safe, loved and most of all happy~ thank you Windsor Manor"

"Spurgeon Manor was a beautiful facility. It has all levels. They have independent, assisted, and memory care. I don't know much about the staff. It was just a short visit inquiry. I know a lot of people that have relatives there, and they do a good job. The dining room and common spaces were all very bright and clean. I pretty much looked only at the memory care area, but I have been in the independent and assisted living quarters. The independent quarters were very nice. I visited some people there that were doing rehab, and they have an excellent rehab department. I only talked to one lady and she was very nice, courteous, and knowledgeable. I was there on a Sunday afternoon, and it was pretty quiet."

"My husband is in Brio. It's brand new and well-staffed. They always have a nurse or two out there and a lot of well-trained younger people. It's more expensive than others, but everything is included. I didn't have to take furniture or anything. It's all provided. The food is really good and he eats everything. They're nice portions and very tasteful. The gal that gets them to exercise is really good and pleasant. The place is done where he can walk with his walker and go outside. There's always somebody watching him and checking on him when he's in his room. There are only 15 people in that area, and they're all well taken care of. I'm satisfied with what they have. It's the most expensive place here in town, but it's worth it. I was so amazed that there were no additions to my first bill. It was a flat daily rate no matter what. The rooms are large and have big bathrooms and private baths, built-in dressers and television. It's very well done."

"My wife has moved into the Senior Suites of Urbandale. She's in memory care. She seems to be adapting to her surroundings. They tell me that she's being calm and pleasant. They like her company. When I visited, she was clean and didn't have any odors. She was in good shape and in good hands. Her room was clean and bright. There was a large window there. She has a nice room. One day, when my wife and I were getting things arranged just visiting, they brought a meal to us in the entry area and both of us ate. It was good food. The dining area is typical for an institution like that. I know they have different activities. I don't know physically what they do to keep her active other than just walking around. It was the cheapest I could find. I've had good responses from all of the staff that I've had contact with. I'm still learning what they're offering and what she is participating in."

"I went to Meadowview of Clive. It's the cheapest of the other places that we have visited. It's more affordable. I like the two-bedroom-one-bath. As for the staff, Susan seems to be a nice lady. She's a good manager. The place is something that we liked."
