I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My family had an extraordinarily bad experience with Arbor Terrace on Sweeten Creek Rd. In Asheville. We placed our father in Evergreen, the memory care section. When we called to check on him, which we did almost daily, the reports were positive with minor comments that he was adjusting and sometimes got upset, but nothing the "couldn't handle." Three days into his residency, the psychiatrist called with a list of concerning behaviors that had been reported to him by the staff. This was a shock based on the communication that we had received from the facility. We spoke with the Memory Care Director and explained that these type of behaviors should be communicated to the Responsible Party (me) when they occur. From that point on our calls were screened. Arbor Terrace staff requested that we wait 2 weeks before visiting. Against our better judgment, we complied. The visit occurred. There was a passing mention ro the visitors that he had fought during bathing; however, no call was made to the Healthcare power of attorney and responsible party. At 10:30 p.m. on. Sunday night Arbor Terrace discharged my father. Until 9:23 p.m. there had been no communication to the responsible party of any concerning behaviors from the staff at Arbor Terrace. It was a med tech that was working a double shift that called to inform me that my father was being evicted and could not return to this location. It was a chaotic and traumatic night. When my father came home he was bleeding and had bruising on his arms. Even during the exit conference, the memory care director confirmed that he had been adjusting well and could not explain why things went so poorly on the weekend. Beware of Arbor Terrace, our experience was one of inaccurate communication or none at all. The weekend staff is particularly concerning. The leadership at this location is lacking. A weekend med tech should not be tasked with communicating an eviction to the family. She has neither the training, experience, nor expertise to handle that situation. The Excutive Director took no ownership of the way in which this discharge/eviction this was handled. It is a lovely facility and the full time weekday workers seem gentle and kind but the fresh paint and new carpet hide very real concerns: lack of accurate communication, lack of leadership, and apparent lack of education and training of the weekend staff that boarders on abuse of the elderly. If your loved one is docile and does not exhibit traditional agitation and frustration that comes with dementia and Alzheimer's then this may be a good spot for you. If your loved ones does have those behaviors beware, Arbor Terrace is ill equiped to handle it .

We chose to move my sister to Arbor Terrace of Asheville because of their friendliness. It was more of a home-type setting to me than just a business. So it's more comfortable. I just liked everything about it. It's inviting. They are very efficient, friendly, and helpful. They do daily activities. They have a salon, therapy, and things.

Provider Response

Gail, we're happy to hear you had such a positive experience with our team! Thanks for taking the time to leave us this information about your experience. Take care!

I visited this facility

Many of the staff members of Arbor Terrace Senior Living had been there for years and we felt that they took good care of the residents. They seemed to have a high level of satisfaction working there, and I think that's important that there's not a lot of turnovers. We toured the memory care area, but we focused on assisted living. The place was clean, but it could use some sprucing up. The lady who did the tour was knowledgeable and took a lot of time with us. She knew and answered all our questions. They have a salon and a small outdoor area that was very peaceful and beautiful with a mini fountain. They also transport their residents to doctor's appointments, but some doctors come in on-site too.

Provider Response

Hi Estelle, your wonderful feedback and rating mean a lot to us. Thank you for letting our team know how we did! We look forward to helping again in the future. Take care!

I visited this facility

Arbor Terrace of Asheville was a lovely and high-end facility. They put a lot of time into first impressions in terms of furnishings and decor. However, the facility was small, so the physical common area space was very small. The hallways were narrow and tight, and they had few rooms on the first floor. Most of the rooms were on the upper floors, but the dining room was on the first floor. They have two different sizes of studio apartments, and then there are 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom apartments. They told us about activities, but they're a bit more limited. They have an activity room, they can do arts and crafts, they have a small library onsite, and they have a beauty shop onsite. Its location is in a more commercial busy neighborhood part of South Asheville. However, it's significantly more expensive, not just for the base rate, but for the activities of daily living levels. The tiers are significantly more expensive. The staff who toured us was wonderful. She was very kind, very thorough and very informative. They showed me the menu, but none of us tried it.

Provider Response

Jennifer, thank you for sharing your honest feedback about your experience! If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Arbor Terrace of Asheville was very commendable. It was very clean, and the people were friendly and very caring. The actual rooms were large enough to be comfortable like in your own home. The staff was very nice, very cooperative and very friendly also.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I went to almost every place in town, and Arbor Terrace seemed like they gave me the most information. I felt like that the residents were taken care of; the best care out there of any place that I saw in town. They got back to me immediately. The menu is catered to individual residents. The dining room is nice. They have more activities depending on how severe the dementia is. I like how the staff care for the residents.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I don't think anybody will come close to Arbor Terrace. It is only two stories and there are only 40 residents on the assisted living's side. Against the other facility, that's where Arbor Terrace of Asheville would win out because it is a very intimate physical situation and because it is smaller and there are fewer people than the other facility. I met all of the staff, they know me and I know them. It is just very intimate. The ratio of staff to residents is much smaller. What my mother does is that she gets up every morning bed, makes her bed and goes down to breakfast. It almost feels like a home there. After breakfast, she goes to the activity room, which is right next door. The activities director is there all day. They would bring in people from the outside that could sing or play instruments or an animal doctor and then they play games like bridge. When you go to that room, there is always something for you to do. They are active as they want to be and that's really a personal thing. My mother loves the place, she picked it herself. I think it is also because she feels the love from them. The staff is very loving. The intimacy puts them into position where you can actually feel that. My mother had been to two other places and when she walked in, she said, "This is it" because "It just felt like home." The place is very warm and intimate. It didn't feel "clinical" like you're in a facility. Some of the people who come to see my mother who are not quite ready for assisted living say that's where they want to go. I can call the executive director anytime. I can call and it doesn't matter which I speak to, they know my mother's situation. They rotate the nurses so that the nurses could know the residents and the residents could get to know them as well. The leadership there are hiring the right people at work, so it is clear that people have been trained to be caring and loving.

I visited this facility

Amongst the places I have visited for my mother, my favorite was Arbor Terrace. It was a beautiful building and it was very clean. They have a program that seemed very professional and well done. Their rooms were great. They were spacious and clean. The staff appeared to be taking very good care of their patients. Also they seemed to be very kind. However, they told me that they are not allowed to push wheelchair with patients in them. They said patients have to self-propel their wheelchairs. That is the reason why mother couldn't go there because sometimes she has to be pushed. They said it was a state law but no one I've talked to about this has ever heard of that before. I don't know what's the deal with that, but that's why she is not going there. I would recommend this place if the person is more independent and not likely to be in a wheelchair.

Visited this facility

My grandfather and I visited this facility as we look around Asheville for the right Assisted Living Facility for my grandmother to move into. My grandfather was not really impressed, but I was very pleased with the cleanliness of the facility and I really appreciated the time that the staff took to answer our questions, show us around, and introduce us to residents. Although we have yet to make a final decision, this facility will definitely be on our short list when we do make a decision. Plus, Asheville is such a great area in general with its nice, temperate climate and beautiful surrounding nature. If you are looking for an Assisted Living Facility near Asheville, I suggest you check out Arbor Terrace.
