Accepted Answer

Activities daily from 10am-5pm (sometimes earlier/later) that promote physical, mental, emotion, cognitive, spiritual balance that promote a “full of life experience”. Activities even on weekends- just shorter amount of time. Many outings such as lunch at Russ’, van Gogh art exhibit, Art prize, color tour, Whitecaps game and more!

Who assesses residents' health and cognitive functioning? How often is that assessment repeated?

Accepted Answer

Assessment is completed by our Health and Wellness director or RN. 
Completed at:
o	time of move 
o	30 days
o	Quarterly
Reason for 30 days after move in is because it can be difficult to understand how to care for someone without actually caring for someone. We like to make sure we are giving the absolute best care possible to your loved one! These assessments ensure this!

Accepted Answer

Frequent check-ins with families while they visit. We encourage calls for updates as well.

What transportation services does The Cortland Holland offer to assisted living residents?

Accepted Answer

No transportation services - family provides or we recommend a transportation services. We do enjoy bus rides as an activity.

How many staffers are on duty in the daytime and overnight?

Accepted Answer

Two staff members in MC at the moment, as we fill more beds could be potential for 3. All depends on needs of CM as to how we staff.

Accepted Answer

Average age is upper 70-90 in Assisted Living. Many activity-based community members. Socialization at a happy hour, bus rides, games and other activities are a favorite.

Accepted Answer

We are located in more of a rural setting however, we have multiple attractions nearby such as downtown Holland and Zeeland, Holland State Park, Tunnel Park and more!

Accepted Answer

Downtown Holland, Holland State Park, Tunnel park, Downtown Zeeland, local parks, Windmill Island, Kollen Park, Centennial Park and more all 10–15-minute drive.

What makes the chef or dining program at The Cortland Holland exceptional? What kind of menu can assisted living residents expect?

Accepted Answer

Enjoy a healthy balance for meals. Breakfast, larger lunch (main meal), smaller dinner. Accommodations can be made for special diets such as Gluten Free, Sugar free, Low sodium, Diabetic, etc.

What safety features or security measures does The Cortland Holland offer to assisted living residents?

Accepted Answer

We have a pendant system; a button to press. In form of either a watch or a necklace. Call goes to staff pagers when they then come to assist. We also have pull cords (3) in all AL rooms - one by shower, toilet and bed—on top of the pendant that is always on the CM. Frequent emails for updates on community. You will always see Management walking on floor to ensure things are running smoothly, stopping in to say hello to CM’s and families. Quarterly care conferences as well.

Accepted Answer

Currently 1 to 8 ratio.

What ongoing senior care training does the staff receive?

Accepted Answer

Staff receives trainings from a Dr. Collins on a website called Collins Learning. Every month, this program allows staff to ensure instruction on multiple different topics from proper hygiene, dementia, safety programs, safety precautions, transfers, etc. There is also a dementia course (all staff), and medication training (if applicable) staff go through.

Accepted Answer

Collins Learning - can provide refresher courses in dementia training/ behaviors. All staff go through a dementia course to earn certificate.

Accepted Answer

Yes, we do. There is a pet policy. Courtyard is accessible for pets as well as outdoor walking paths. If indoors pet can enjoy the CM’s room, keep on leash if walking a hallway to outside.

Accepted Answer

24-hour safety features and care. Memory care is a locked down unit, we have to observe CM in AL every 2 hours unless otherwise stated on 15min, 30 min, or hourly checks.

Accepted Answer

Activities going on throughout the entire day. Some activities specific for memory care such as balloon badminton, sensory boxes, brain games, reading story time, bowling, puzzles, etc.

What techniques does The Cortland Holland use to support memory care residents during mealtimes?

Accepted Answer

Multiple forms of queuing and redirection. Sitting in groups helps some while sitting at a table top with one other person for less distraction helps others. We utilize red rimmed lipped plates - red is the last color to go for memory care Community Members and it helps them find the food on their plate instead of scraping it off.

Is The Cortland Holland affiliated with a hospital if more care is needed?

Accepted Answer

We work with Holland hospital rather closely - others as well. We also work closely with Hospice of Holland - if families prefer a different hospice they may choose.
