Albany, the capital of New York State, is home to 98,617 people, of whom 13.5% are 65 and up. An estimated 10.7% of people in this age group have dementia or Alzheimer’s. This disease causes cognitive impairment that can result in mood swings, memory loss and reduced ability to manage essential activities of daily living. People with Alzheimer’s and dementia have twice as many hospital stays per year compared to those who don’t, a fact that illustrates the importance of dementia care. In Albany, deaths related to Alzheimer’s disease increased by 16.82% between 2016 and 2020, while total deaths increased at a slower rate of 14.95%.
Long-term memory care can help prevent accidents, hospitalizations and deaths related to Alzheimer’s. Staff in dementia care residences receive special training on how to handle the confusion and agitation that can accompany the disease. Memory care also often includes evidence-based interventions that can help preserve cognition, such as activities, exercise and specialized diets. This guide talks about the cost of this type of care in Albany and some of the city’s resources for seniors.

I liked the shared rooms at Peregrine Senior Living at Shaker. I liked that it seemed like it was a smaller facility, so it could give greater attention to memory care residents. The staff were very nice, very, very gracious, and very helpful. Of all of the facilities I visited, I think this was the best one.
They showed me the facility for memory care residents where they had them sit down and give them some work activities like segregating buttons by color or size or things like that, something that helps them to exercise their minds. I thought that was an excellent idea. The facilities in general were very beautiful.

Loudonville Assisted Living Residence was a very nice place. It was very clean. The staff was friendly. The place was very home-like. The rooms were arranged around the common area, so that rather than having to walk down a hall to go somewhere, they could just open their door and then be out in the common area. We did see the dining area. It was very nice, clean, bright, and easy to get around.
We saw some people were watching TV, some were singing along to some songs, and some were doing puzzles. They seemed to have a nice amount of things to do. They had a salon, a sunroom, and a small little courtyard. The apartments were a decent size, bright, and airy. Everything was kept up very well.

We are leaning towards Peregrine Senior Living at Colonie for my dad. The person managing the place, we could see how caring and kind she was to the residents. Even though she was having a very demanding morning when we went there, she took the time out and showed us around and we could see her interaction with the residents. She was very compassionate. It felt like a home environment and a little less institutional. It was a beautiful facility with a lot of windows and natural light. They had a beautiful chapel. The rooms were nicely set up with private bathrooms. They had a big gathering place as you walk in where the residents were having fun playing and bouncing around a ball with music. There are just a lot of little areas where people could sit and watch TV or take a rest on a sofa. It just seemed to have a lot of space where each resident could find a place where they could be comfortable. They also had a very nice courtyard.

We had a very comprehensive tour of Brookdale East Niskayuna. The person doing the tour was very knowledgeable. The facility was clean and nice, and that facility is all memory care. It had things in place for people who need memory care, but ultimately, I’m not going to choose that because my mom doesn’t need memory care right now. But it was a great facility, and affordable, I thought, for memory care. They did have a courtyard and all their spaces that were outside were fenced in. The rooms were nice. They were spacious and updated for the most part.

She gave us a lot of information so that we didn’t need to ask too many questions at the second location. The rooms were very nice. The upkeep looked great; everything looked great. They had a variety of activities that they offer. They have a schedule posted for each month and they share that in both locations with the families, which I thought was nice. There was a bingo game just about to start when we were there. We also went outside on their walking path, which was lovely. The dining area was very nice, too.
